The rumbling came nearer and nearer, sending shivers up and down Ash's back. Ashia spun around and growled, her emerald eyes sharp and full of fight. Ash's tan and grey fur was bushed out, and he took a few deep breaths. What kind of animal, or machine, could make such a noise? Moon yelped and ducked under his feet, covering her face with her paws. Ash shook his head but wished that he could do the same. Ashia looked back at him and growled, "What IS that?" Ash shrugged, eyes wide. Reepicheep clacked his beak and said, "Well, I find out." The red winged blackbird pushed off from Ash's shoulder, disappearing over a hill. Ash lept forward, barking. "Reepicheep! Come back, you bird!" Ashia growled and backed up, hackles raised. "Quiet Ash. Just watch for him." Ash turned to her, but found no reply. He sighed and backed away, letting Moon cower under him. Only a minute later, Reepicheep shot over their heads, trilling a blackbird song. "Wolves, wolves, have no fear! Just large herd. Large herd of elk! BIG elk!" Ashia lifted her ears and grinned. "Wow. There must be a whole bunch of 'em! Father used to tell me stories of how he hunted elk. You see, we only have whitetail deer where my pack hunts. Father said elk are real fun." Ash smiled but inside he saw the bloodlust starting to creep into her eyes. Her silvery white fur was fluffed out and her jaws were dripping with saliva. Moon's brown figure shot out from underneath Ash, nearly knocking him over. She pranced over to Ashia, small tail wagging. "Ashia, can I come? Please?" Ashia smiled and winked. "Sure, kid." She looked up at Ash. "Can you stay here and try to find a den for tonight? It will probably be a long hunt." Ash nodded, feeling relieved. He wasn't the greatest of hunters. He looked past Ashia's shoulder and noticed a large dust cloud, and inside he saw the elk. There were about 15 females, their coats a darkish brown color, big black eyes, and long, muscular legs. They had long, thick necks and big ears, with large black hooves and a short, stubby tail. There were a few calves running alongside fat mothers, the babies stumbling and trying to keep up. At the head of the herd was the bull elk. He was huge, with his large mane around his neck, his long, heavy antlers almost too heavy for his head. He had thick haunches and a very big chest. Ash gulped and looked at Ashia, wondering if she was strong enough to take him. She sighed and pawed at his face. "I'll be fine. Lets go, Moon." They set off, tongues lolling. Ash turned and set out. He felt Reepicheep land softly on his shoulder, and together they searched the rolling hills. Ash just found a badger den and a dip in the ground, both which were too small. Soon he spotted a large hill that sloped down to a meadow on the other side. The hill was large, and Ash trotted up to get a good look at the meadow. He turned and noticed the large mountains behind him, with the pastel sunset and bright sun. He turned and took a deep breath, feeling tired. His gold eyes roamed the mountian, and suddenly, he spotted a small shape running towards him. Was that Moon? No, wrong color, and too small. And there was another small figure behind it...Reepicheep soared off of Ash's shoulder and glided around him. Ash stood tall and erect, awaiting the company.
