A bright flash lit up the room, the cool air washing over the plastic chamber spotlighted in the dead center. A eerie red glow signaled a sign of heat and therefore life as it fell upon two eggs quivering in their nest. The first, a large and rough dark blue spattered in yellow. The second, a smaller white egg, smooth and elegant, its shell tinted with blue like the reflection of sunlight upon water. As they shook and rattling in their soft shells, a nose appeared out of the smaller of the two. Its shy yet eager white nose torn open the beautiful shell, as shimmering blue paint oozed out around it. A tiny snake, its body coated in blue, wriggled out of the nest and began to explore its circular territory. Then, the darker eggs began to burst. All at once it tore, yellow paint spattering its nest, as a thin dark hatchling emerged and wriggled toward a fold in the nesting paper. He curled up underneath it, harboring a pitiful anger towards the world for disturbing his slumber. The lighter snake cocked his head to the side, curious of the new arrival. He slithered forward, poking his head tentatively under the paper, just to say hello. A quick whip of the dark snakes tail coated the poor curious hatchling in yellow paint, sending him off to stagger back to his nest as he cleaned himself of the odd color. He huffed and pouted, curling up in his nest to mope.
Several days later, the two snakes find themselves once again ripped from their cozy homes and placed together in a new one. A large shadowy tank, filled with carnival themed hides and sparkling plants, is now holding the two snakes. The darker of the two, now named Cognac, squirms out of the caretakers grip and slides into the closest hide, hissing and grumbling as he goes. Daffodil, the lighter snake, rolls his eyes and allows the caretaker to release him gently. He happily explores the new tank thoroughly, spending an especially long amount of time admiring the sparkly leaves of the artificial plants. The two enjoy their space in their own way, avoiding each other as much as possible, yet able to be civil when needed (for the most part). At feeding time, the caretaker places two pinkies in the tank and watches as Daffodil gently grabs and slurps down one. Cognac seems much more enthused, striking the little mouse several times before snatching it away to his favorite hide, a coral rock in the darkest corner of their home. The caretaker sighs and leaves them to themselves, switching off the lights in the tent to close for the night. All is quiet and still for the longest time, mind the occasional sounds from the petting zoo nearby. Then, a loud crash resonates through the two snake's chests as the ceiling they have know all their life is torn away. It reveals an open night sky, which Daffodil finds beautiful and mesmerizing, yet Cognac ignores to keep his attention on the issue at hand. Two large crows whip through the air above their tank, cawing and ripping at anything they can find, searching for an easy meal. The largest crow spots the baby snakes in their tank, approaching it with hunger in his eyes. Cognac squirms and presses himself farther into his hide, peering out to watch the predator before him. He shivers as the whole tank shakes to the rhythm of the crow tearing apart the screen top above them. The rest of the crows take notice and begin to peck at the glass, scratching their needle sharp beaks against the glass like nails on a chalkboard. Cognac fearfully pokes his head out only to see Daffodil in awe staring up at the monstrous bird above him. He dosnt even flinch as the birds talon pierces through the screen, inched from tearing the little white snake out and into its mighty beak. Cognac watches selfishly, curling closer into his hide, eager to watch the little snake get eaten up. However, he feels a twinge in his heart, and a moral code begins to form in his mind. How could he let this innocent snake, one that he grew with, one that was always so eager and generous, one that despite their differences showed only kindness to him, to be killed in such a horrendous manner? Grumbling to himself, he debates these questions in his mind as Daffodil continues to watch the birds progress. He flicks his little tongue out and bobs his head as the birds cackle and scrap over who gets the first bite. He dosnt understand the danger, but rather is intrigued by the new comers, ready to join them on their odd little adventure. As a loud screech rolls threw the air he watches helplessly as the largest crow breaks through the screen above him, its black head firing down on the snake like a missal. Then, his face lands in a pile of gravel, as Cognac slams his muzzle into the birds neck. The crow flairs up and screeches, shooting down to attack the dark snake now. Cognac coils and springs, landing a painful bite into the feathery head, and holding on sternly. The crow fluffs up and shakes, getting stuck in the broken wires, tumbling to the ground. The little snake goes flying as the bird lands with a gut wrenching thud, and plops unharmed into his water dish. The other birds flock around their leader, cawing and fearfully jumping up to fly away one by one. Daffodil, still in a daze from the excitement, sits paralyzed before the dark snake. Finally he cocks his head to the side, and asks Cognac, "Were they...trying to be friends...or..?" The dark snake rolls his eyes and lets out a cruel and mocking laugh, shaking his head. "Ugh, you pitiful snake, dont you know anything? They were going to eat you! Youre just lucky Im not as stupid as you are." Cognac smirks and turns away, slithering out of the water dish, trailing watered down paint behind him. "Wait!", Daffodil yells out to him. "Why...if you hate me so much...why did you save me?". Cognac pauses for a moment, his body still and tense, before turning back to respond. "Because..." he says slowly, "I can." He quickly whips his head back and slithers off to his hide, leaving a wondering Daffodil behind him.
A year later, Daffodil curls up outside of Cognac's hide as he does every night now a days. The two snakes have slowly grown to deal with one another better, and even seem to enjoy each others company to a point. After that horrific night, their caretaker took them back to the breeding facility that he had been representing, and promised to bring them back next year once the tent was re-done. Now that everything had been set, the pair found themselves curled up in their old tank, on the same shadowy table they had been on before. The crowd came in each day, admiring the beautiful snakes that the tent had to offer. More critters came in and more critters left as business increased, but the two maned males stayed put, growing closer each day. As the carnival came to an end they found themselves to be the only ones left still up for sale, and yet no buyers had come to see them. Their caretaker approached on the second to last night, and flipped their for sale sign over. "Looks like you found a home after all, Daffodil." The boy looked at Cognac disappointingly, shaking his head and walking off without another word. Realization set in as Daffodil poked Cognac's side gently, asking him in a soft tone, "Are you...alright?". Cognac shook his head for a moment, a blank stare clouding his vision, then turned to look at his dear friend. "...No...no Im not.." he said in a timid voice, as he began to sob horribly. "I dont want to leave you!" Cognac yelled suddenly, whipping past Daffodil towards the old coral hide. Daffodil stared after him, frowning, yet also intrigued. It was so out of character for Cognac to be acting this dramatically, especially when Daffodil was right there to witness it. The white snake slithered over, tapping on the hide with his tail. "Come out Cognac, whats going on? Why are you so upset? I know we're close friends and all but..." Cognac peered out from his rock, looking oddly pitiful and small. His eye gleamed and he forced a stiff smirk, gazing up at the light snake before him. Daffodil seemed to understand, finally, that the two had become more than just good friends. They were in love, in a sad yet beautiful way, so much so that neither had really understood their feelings at first. As he began to run these thoughts through his mind, Daffodil felt tears on his cheek, knowing that he may very well never see his love again after tomorrow. Depressed and shattered inside, Daffodil slithered into the coral hide, curling up with his love to spend one last night together. In the morning, the tent lights flickered on harshly, rousing the two snakes. They held each other close as the hide was lifted by the caretaker, revealing two humans standing beside the tank. "Are you sure you want both?" the caretaker said, lifting the two snakes gently. "They can be quite a handful!" The two humans looked at each other and smiled, each holding out their hands to receive the snakes. As Daffodil curled into the girl's hands gently, Cognac wrapped his body around the boy's arm with a tight grip, hissing and squirming with everything he had. The boy chuckled, unraveling the snake and placing him in a black carrier tank. The girl lifted Daffodil into the carrier as well and responded to the caretaker, "Absolutely. Look how cute they are together, who would ever want to separate them?" She smiled beautifully at the man as he packed up the last of the tent's items, speaking more of their new companions and asking little questions about their personalities. The boy crouched down, peering in at the two snakes happily. "You two are going to be alright, dont worry.." He said gently, walking off to talk with the caretaker as well. The two snakes looked at each other, happiness bursting from them as they huddled together. They would be together after all, and together they planned to stay.
