Elk hunt

Postby The Lost Gremlin » Mon Aug 17, 2015 12:59 pm

A small pack of Volcanine hunting a cow elk.
For more info on this species, please see this post.

"Due to the brightness of their glowing lava and eyes and the smoke coming from their vented tails, Volcanines are not the stealthiest nor fastest of hunters. Instead they rely on ambush hunting and using their superior stamina to wear down prey. They are very tactical hunters and will not only plan hunts well ahead of the attack but they'll also consider which pack members are best for a particular job, i.e. tracking prey, chasing, etc.
With large prey pack members take it in turns chasing and nipping at it''s legs until they can corner it for the final kill, in which the whole pack participates.

Despite all this, hunting isn't always successful, reasons often falling on the pack not being careful and alerting the prey to their presence before they begin. It's estimated that only 20% of all hunts end in a kill."
