Sand-Akula Dragon Concept

Postby Gigimon » Sat Jan 31, 2015 5:14 pm

Sand-Akula Dragons- sometimes called 'Sand-Shark Dragons', SADs(Sand-Akula Dragons) are a dragonic beast that live in the vast deserts worldwide. They are unique as they dive into the sands and swim though them as if they were swimming as they go to breach for air their face horns stick out much like a sharks fin in the ocean, thus how they acquired their name. As these beast 'swim' though the dunes their unique backwards facing scales rattle and sometimes this makes people believe the dunes are singing and have become frightened that theyll be killed if they hear said rattling, these scales also armor-like and cannot be pierced easily they also can tell the mood of the dragon, if a SAD is calm, happy, or neutral mood the scale are flattened and its approachable, however if its angered, agitated or but in a bad mood the scales spike up and become sharp, the scales are flexible and with each scale it loses another moves up into its place, SADs will continue to grow new scales til the day they pass. Unlike most dragons these dragons have two different breaths, a very kerosene-gel like fire thats only usable after eating volcanic rock, which is surprisingly hard to find in the desert, and a very powerful blast of pressured air. Sand-Akula's intake alot of air and have huge lungs, they have two extra organs beside their lungs, one organ is dubbed 'Air Sac' which contains pressurized air which the SAD can blast out and whip up sandstorms the air sac also allows it to fly for longer terms, and the other organ is called 'Mantle Sac' which is used to hold volcanic rock which it intakes to breath fire. Sand-Akula Dragons have powerful wings if they never had their pressurized air breath their wings would be enough to create a storm to last for hours, their hind legs however are fragile so they trip up alot when running or simply walking, but hey it takes skill to trip over flat surfaces, this is why SADs are mainly found under the sand. These dragons have a nictitating membrane which is a thin membrane which covers the dragons eye when underground or in sandstorms, its common in predators such as cats.Thought their wary of humans they can easily be tamed if you offer one a Prickly Pear, a fruit that grows from a cactus.

Diet- Omnivores. Eating ranges from cactus to lizards to large desert dwelling creatures.

Height
-from head to tail these guys are quite large.
Adults range from 50-70FT
Babies are also quite large being 10-20FT until maturity at 30FT til full grown.

WingSpan
-Their wings are muscular and built for shifting though the sand at high speeds.
babies are born without wing and run around like like a raptor would, gain wings at a year of age and are quite vulnerable during this stage.
adults wing span ranges from 100-140 FT, about double the size of the average body of a SAD

Breeding- Unlike most dragons, SADs do not fight off another male, in the SADs case the female fight off females for the males trust for courtship. Ounce a female has found a suitable male they will usually remain life-long partner, unless competition shows up during their lifetime and they are forced apart if the female fails to fend off any other females, should the female fail it could result in the death of any hatchlings in the nest. Hatchling, babies, are called Sandlings and usually remain cared for by the parents for 3 months before forced to leave the nest. When it comes to nesting couples do not stay in the desert because SAD eggs are surprisingly vulnerable to the sun as they have a thin shell because sandlings are born without an egg tooth, couples after mating will migrate from deserts to ocean tropics, they take their time when migrating as moving to fast from one area to another may bring illness to said SAD. Once the Migration is completed female will pick giant banana tree leaves and weave them into nests. Eggs are usually laid 3 months after fertilization then hatch about 6 months later. Sandlings have no teeth and are very weak at hatching stage, thus the parents feed them bananas for the first few weeks until fangs grow and then switch to feeding them fish. Sand-Akula Dragon breed every 2 years, and spend 1 whole year on the tropic island they roost before they fy back to the desert, when migrating back to the desert it is up to the baby to fly and fend for itself.
