Looks fabu. Honestly the shark tail would have been fine, just use a different species of tail.

Shark tails are definitely over used, but like you said it seems to the only connection to Makoatal. Perhaps the species could have a different variety of tails instead of just one? { And hey you could throw in all kinds of fish tails, tuna, stingray, pufferfish etc. }That way you could still have shark tails, but it would have more of a selection and would be not so similar to the Makoatal species.
Just a thought.
