~The Beginning~
I padded along the dark murky street, my matted fur was covered in mud as I coughed at the bitter cold. I glanced around hearing a loud crash from the alleyway beside me.
"Wh-whose there?! Show yourself!" I demanded, my fur bristling as I tried not to show the fear crawling all underneath it.
A dark figure darted out toward me, but tried to keep hidden as they didn't seem so sure about approaching me.
"My name is.. bullet, yours?"
Bullet wandered even closer to me, but somehow managed to keep his distance at the same time and hopped upon a trash can. His dark fur and pointed ears gleamed in the pale moonlight as he waited for my reply.
My hair stood on end, still unnerved by the other bean's presence. A growl rose in my throat as I fought back thoughts of attacking. "What's it to ya? Unless you plan on giving me some food or a roof over my head I would rather we didn't get to know each other. Streets are tough, everyone for themselves." The bitter and oddly mature voice erupted from my maw, tail lashing back and forth.
Bullet lowered his head, but continued to speak to me even if I seemed testy. "You know, two is far better than one... and if you'd be my other one, then we could do lots together." He said quite unaware of what could be next, and hopped off of the trash can. He then looked up to the dark sky, and said "You asked me who was there, now could you possibly tell me who you are?"
"You...you do have a point."I averted my gaze, blinking in thought for a moment before offering a weak smile towards Bullet. "I'm Charles, but I've had most others call me mangey mutt or stupid dragon. Though I always liked the sound of Charlie." I admitted.
As the other bean dropped from the trash can, I felt a bit safer now that we were face to face. He wasn't so big and scary after all. He was only a bean like me. Lost, scared and broken.
"Charlie, eh?" He said happily. W-who would of called you a stupid dragon!? I've met many mean people, but... That's... Really mean of them!" Bullet followed closely as we walked out into the large empty park. A new friendship formed between two outcasts.
~Years Later~
It had been a couple of years now, and Bullet and I were closer than ever. After that night at the park we had decided to stick together. Closer than brothers, we fought tooth and nail for every scrap of food and our own freedom.
Smirking, I kicked a trash can over with one foot. "Not too shabby lately huh Letty?" I replied, digging around for anything decent to eat. "Those stupid dog catchers didn't know what hit' em! Did you see the way that guy ran for his life when he saw I could breathe fire? Stupid humans can't tell a dog from a dragon these days." A purr of amusement escaping my maw.
"Yeah, huh." Bullet replied while chewing on part of a ripped curtain he found. "Say, how strong is your fire now, charl?" Bullet then poked his head into another trash can next mine, looking for any sort of food to eat.
"Stronger than yours I bet." My lips curled into a smile, tail lashing back and forth playfully.
"I wonder what it's like, being a lapdog. Probably too cozy comfy for me." I laughed, glancing back towards Bullet.
"Heh... We'll see when the time comes!" Bullet then pulled his snout out of the can, and had gotten a piece of /stale-ish/ pizza. "Yeah, I sometimes wonder that too. A warm house, a abundant supply of food, somebody to care for, and a roof over our heads..." He said looking a bit down.
I nudged him. "Come on bro. Don't let it get you down. At least we got each other, right?" I reminded him. A few female dragons walked along the sidewalk across the street. "Mmmm, look at them babes. Just waiting for someone to come speak to them and swoop them off their feet."
"ah, you're right bro. Always together." He winked, then noticed the beauties walking by. "Ain't that the truth" Bullet replied after viewing the two. "Say, perhaps we should adventure out, today? A bright afternoon, slightly sunny weather? What could happen?"
"Tch. You always have the funniest ways of saying things. Sure. Maybe we should track those other babes, hmm? Watchu say? They couldn't possibly resist hunks like us.~" I snickered, darting across the street recklessly.
When we caught up to the other dragons they turned a sharp corner onto another road before crying out in fear. "What the? Hey! Hold up! We weren't followin' ya I swear--!" I spun around to see what they were running from. My ears flattened to my skull as men with nets emerged from a large truck. "Nabbers!"
Bullet tried to Leap over me, trying to force me out of the way as the dog catchers issued a net from the large truck, and tried to capture us while we scrambled in a panic. "Run!" bullet yelped as he ran down part of the sidewalk, hoping for me and the others to follow.
Bullet slowed as he waited for me to come. Ahead was a splintered board, presumably an old sign from one of the closed down shops nearby.
I was shoved ahead suddenly as Bullet strayed behind. Whipping my head around with green eyes burning I cried out.
"Bullet!"
One of the humans took a wired noose and tightened it around one of the other beans, another laughing as Bullet writhed under him. "Haha, you think you could escape from us. We'll always catch you and lock you up eventually. Strays aren't welcome in the big city."
The other humans began to close in on Bullet, I swallowed hard while wondering what to do, taking a step or two towards my only close friend. "Hold on! I'm coming!" I snarled, ready to fight off any and all odds stacked against me. Even if it meant we would both be captured. It was better than living life on the streets a loner again.
Bullet struggled and tried his best to get free of the net. Seeing that his dearest friend charlie was waiting close by, Bullet screeched " Runnnnnnn!!!!!!" in a mangled voice. Tears streamed down his furry cheeks as he was led to the truck, and he turned back to charlie, he said "Charlie, I promise not to let you down again, but for now..." His words seemed a bit blurred as he was put into the truck. Yet another man was still there, and seemed to glance over towards me. My fur bristling with fury and fear.
"What are you standing around gawking for?! Go after the other one! These two have been causing us trouble for years! Hurry!" Someone in the back that was helping haul Bullet into the truck shouted.
With my ears perked and eyes burning hot with tears that I fought to hold back, I managed to whisper. "I'll come back for you, I'll search to the ends of the earth for you. I promise.." Spinning on the balls of my heels, I ran like the coward I felt I was, running as far as my paws would allow. My eyes clenched shut, a tear escaping and falling down my face as the sun began to set. Setting on everything I once knew and held dear to me.
"One day, we will meet again."
