You could use the burn tool (but personally I don't like it for shading.. It's too.. Burned ^^) or the sandy like tool. Just put the sandy tool a bit darker than the colour you're working on and see the object/dog/person/thing/etc as one of those 3D figures, you know. If you take a wooden ball and shine light on one side, the other side will have shading. If you want to do more, you could also add highlights (on the other side, of course). If it looks weird, try adding/removing or moving shade/highlight.
