Lumin believes in living life to its fullest, taking risks and learning from her mistakes (which have no shortage). One thing she does to make her life as action-packed as possible is skateboarding.
When she got her first skateboard, she was just a little kid. Lu remembers it very clearly, just as another young girl would remember their first doll. It was a mini-size skateboard, with a purple and blue swirl swirl on the bottom. She loved it and used it everyday, skating up and down the streets, eventually being allowed to go to the skate park. Her first time at the skate park was a big moment for her. She remembered walking into it, holding her little skateboard in her jaws. She took a timid step in, feeling so small. She watched the other, older boys for a few minutes, then walked up to the top of a jump and strapped her bright blue helmet on. Putting her skateboard down, she took a deep breath and put a paw on the board. She was just about to go when she was interrupted. "Who is this? A little girl trying the jumps?" said a sneering voice. Lu's head popped up, looking for the source of the comment. Her eyes settled on a big kiamara, three times her size. He looked at her with a smirk, then went on, "Why don't you run off and play with your dolls, little girl. This park is for skaters only." Lu's eyes started to water. A tear was forming, but suddenly her sadness turned to determination to show that boy that she could skate, too. She narrowed her eyes and got back on her board, and pushed off. She felt the wind rush in her face as she soared down. She smirked, and bent down to take off the ramp. Suddenly, she slipped off, landing on her rear, her purple and blue swirled board whizzing out from under her, going off the ramp without her. It took her a moment to process what had happened. Then she shakily stood up and went to retrieve her board. She walked past the boy who had teased her, hanging her head low. She picked up her board and walked up to the jump. She wasn't about to let those boys get the best of her. She tried again, really focusing, closing out the rest of the world. She took off, and landed the jump. Then she walked away from the park, giving the older boy a look that said, "I told you so!"
Ever since that day, she went to the park to practice, eventually becoming one of the best skaters in the park. She is still the only girl at the park, but that's fine by her. She likes being different, and always has. Skateboarding gives her a sense of identity, and she loves it.
