I use burn tool and the smear/smudge tool, and lots of layers, and lots of Opacity.

alright shading.... hm...
okay, for me, i completely finish the drawing, like, the coloring in the lines and what not. Lock Alpha it. Then go up to layers and duplicate the layer you put the color on. After that, color the copy in a shade of grey, then take the blurred eraser tool and add in the areas you want lighter, the stuff you don't erase with be a bit darker.^^ After that go to the top of the layers box, and click normal. It'll show a selection of things, press, Multiply. tada! :3 hope this helped!
