woodland's deer sketches

I'm not an experienced artist, simple as that. I can design but not draw. So, why not get better by sketching my favorite animal, deer. Overall, I just want to get better at drawing, so I would really like some critique and suggestions on what to do next time for those of you that know how to draw. Anything will help, even the brutal, honest truth.

I'm going to post all my deer sketches and deer art here so they stay in one spot and hopefully I'll eventually be able to see a little improvement every new drawing I make.

Ok, now for this sketch, what do you guys have to say about it? Any advice on the lines? Shading for future references?

For a beginning artist, I think it's pretty good, woodland. c:
I would advise, for future deer drawings, focusing more on the head shape. And the eyes, put a little more detail and depth in those. Make them tell a story. Also, perhaps blur the pelt colors a bit more so its more realistic and not sucha harsh dividing line. You'll be amazed on how much it will help.
For a cutesie plush-looking deer, you have the rounded and soft edges down pretty good so far. But, depending on if you want to draw more realistic deer or not, I suggest using photos of the real animal as reference to draw from. Doing that will give you the actual real shape of the animal plus the shading you desire.
That's what I did, and sometimes still do when I want the fullest realism.

Now, I probably don't seem like the artist type. If you look at my oekaki, you'll believe I have the drawing capacity of a two-year-old. But believe me, I can draw. Not to be cockey, but I can. However, I as an artist am held back to pencil and paper. In your case, you can draw on oekaki- a hard skill to master, my friend. I give you props.
Bottom line, I enjoy your drawing. I think it's good for a beginning artist, and it being good on oekaki makes it even better in my book. PM me sometime? I'd live to talk art with you. c:
