The stars are not all bad. You've got to give them variety and color! I saw a tutorial on how to do a night sky and it would be similar to what your doing. I don't have the link at the moment but I'll tell you what I know. Make a sperate layer for the stars and use different sizes, opacities, and colors (normally, stars are blue, orange, yellow, red, etc.). Also make the stars clump and spread out in different areas. Make the look natural. An example could be the stars are more conduit rated in one area and then the start to spread out as you go farther away from the clump. After all that, you can duplicate the layer (if you want) and move it around, chane the opacity and color, etc. make some "background" stars if you know what I mean. Add some color to the black space part too. Put some cool nebula or has effects in there and give a little bit of volume and color. Going back to the stars, you can make some look like they're glowing by using the airbrush effect on them. You could also add comets or plants or whatever, get creative.
Some of this was from the tutorial, the rest was from me. ;3
Its a lot to read but hope it helps! ^-^
EDIT:
I found a really good picture to show you the colors, brightness, clumps, and opacities of some stars. :3Photograph from National Geographic courtesy of NASA
EDIT 2: I saw some square stars in your picture. You might need to fix that.^-^
