D'aaw Sorry to hear that! With my designs, I generally don't start with an idea in mind.
I normally color in the coat, and then sort of just design the mane and tail.
Based on mane and tail I kinda get a feel for the character.
For example, with a mare with curly, short hair, she's a fair bit like Pinkie Pie, so I add some accessories fitting a hyper and funny personality.
Another example would be a mare with shorter, spiky hair. Such a design would indicate to me a more spunky and perhaps flirty nature.
And, of course, color takes a lot of control when it comes to personality.
I do design accessories based on the personalities I associate with my designs, if that makes sense.
Earthier tones are more warm, while pastels are shy and distinct colors (white, purple) are more snobbish.
I'm not sure how helpful that was, sorry. >.< I don't exactly have a specific way of obtaining muse.
It just sorta flows out of me, I guess.
