What gets them charged up
“You shouldn't be down here.“ The guard states, more than a hint of nervousness in his voice. He is larger than the intruder, and could take him down if it came down to it. But its dark down here in the deeper parts of the city. Its spooky, fill of old tech. Old rusting gears and mysterious objects tangled among the countless wires that powered the city.
The guard, Frendren, was scared of the dark. Always had been, the shadows and the unknown. He didn't like to come down here, far too far away from the light clean metallic light above. But he couldn't ignore the sounds, the knowledge he had to do his job and protect the tech that lay below here
He hoped that this stranger was a lost kid, someone afraid like he was. Someone who would quickly leave and let him leave as well. A blip in his average life.
The figure doesn't turn. And in the guards sweeping torchlight he recognises the strangness of the other storkie. The too-short tail and the solid hooves knocking into the wires and switches. But mostly he notices the antlers, sprouting proud and heavy from the felines head.
Only upper class get modifications like that. People that Frendren serves but otherwise keeps out of the way of.
Storkies like that are dangerous after all. Suits and wealth, confidence and arrogance.
They dont hide in dusty wires.
Something is wrong.
“I know.”
The figure turns, a grin on their face. He is handsome, Frendren thinks, in a wild yet refined way. There are two cords resting on the trespassers hooves. Ready to be plugged together, or perhaps just unplugged.
“Its interesting down here isnt it?”
Frendrec shakes his head a little. The knowledge he has stumbled into something he shouldnt of spiking up the fur on his back. Thick in the air like static electricity.
“The lost and unknown tech. The backbones of the city.”
“Its old, useless things.” Frendrec pleads. The storkie should leave. He wants to leave.
“Is it? These wires, they are new.” He lifts them, showing them to Frendrec as if he couldnt see the meters upon meters of clean, polished wires. Not a speck of dust upon them. The stag-like storkie doesnt wait for a response this time.
“Veins of the city. Filled with life, filled with energy going everywhere theyre needed. Its incredible.”
“Im going to-” The figure is in his face within moments.
“Going to what? Call for backup, run home. Escape?” His eyes are filled with wild energy. Theres sparks in the air. Sparks on the wires. Its not so dark anymore but the fear has not left. Not while He is still here.
“No.” The other strokes eyes widen, eyebrows raised in a challenge.
“No?”
“No Im not. You dont want me to.”
Theres that charge in the air still. But maybe its not so scary. Maybe it feels even a little familiar. It feels like excitement and knowledge and perhaps even scaring away the dark and the fear.
“You are right.” The antlered deer says. Finally stepping back just a step. Frendric can breath, but at this moment he hardly wants to. His heart is thundering. Alight with adrenalin. He wasnt supposed to talk back, or challenge.
“Come here.” He asks Fredric. Its the last option. The final decision. The stag lights up as the guard approaches. Hissing wires wildly sparking. Setting the two storkies eyes aglow with an electric blue.
“Take charge.” He tells Frendric. Let go of that follower mindset. Let go of the things that hold you back.
“Take the charge.” He says again. Holding the sparking wire up, unresponsive to the electricity that travels down his fur. Along his horns. Across his eyes.
“Become reborn.”
Its like lightning. Like light and life and power and heat and cold and everything. Its magic and technology and its taking him apart and building him up and he never knows if it will stop. His is a battery ready to explode and nothing can stop him now.
