Davi knew what he was doing was dangerous, and probably downright insane, but he felt like he had to do something. He unlashed his ketch, the Starling, from the dock and set course for up the coast. More and more sailors in the past month have returned to his hometown with battered ships and wild tales of a creature enchanting them to almost crash into a rocky cove. He didn’t believe them, and figured it was just a case of embarrassment and a sailor’s pride at work. Before he could check it out for himself, he noticed his fellow townsfolk and sailors gathering harpoons and nets to try and catch the creature. No one is faster than him on his Starling though, and he grunts with effort to swing the sail into position to steer further from the coast, muttering under his breath, “Sirens, there’s no such thing. It’s all just old tales meant to frighten children away from the dangerous parts of the sea. Well, I’m not afraid.”
The waves are choppy, and the sky is hidden behind a thick layer of clouds. There is plenty of daylight left, and Davi knows the coast like the back of his paw, but he shouldn’t linger out here for very long. The mist kicked up hides the cove until Davi is practically right on top of it. And then he hears it…a solemn and haunting call drifting across the water. He tries to maneuver his ship into a protective crack in the rocks, but the strong feelings of shock, fear, and realization of what he is hearing causes his fingers to loosen their grasp just as a large wave rocks his boat and throws him overboard. Davi lands hard on one of the shallow rocks and the air is pushed out of his lungs as another wave crashes over him. The churning water is impossible to see through as his body is tossed around in the current. The last thing he remembers is something powerful dragging him down into the water…
When he finally comes too, he is surrounded by rocks with the steady sound of waves pounding the outside walls. With a start he jumps up and looks around before meeting the red and green eyes of a creature he’s never seen before. It slowly approaches him, though not afraid of his presence. “Hai! You’re pretty gutzy to be sailing out there right now, good thing I grabbed you before your ship crushed you against a rock. The name’s Calileia by the way. What’s yours?” Her voice is almost song-like and echoes in the small cave. “Davi.” He manages to sputter out. “Nice to meetcha Davi!” She replies with a friendly grin, and Davi can’t help but smile back.
