The busy market street was lined with stalls, kalons bustling between each while shopkeepers called out goods and prices. Marceline knew what she needed for dinner tonight, but she was in an unfamiliar city- an unfamiliar country even- visiting her sister,
Fiona. She had written down down the vegetables and what they were called here, but her pronunciation of them was horribly unpracticed. She decided it was better to just start searching rather than wait around for someone to miraculously walk up and offer to escort her around.
She headed off to the left, peeking over shoulders at each stall's contents. She passed jewelry and art stalls until she came upon farmers selling fruits and vegetables. Most of the items she could find by looking closely and recognizing, but one was a little harder to find. She held her list out to some vendors, and one pointed her down the street and gave some directions in the local language, which Marcy didn't speak. The vendor stopped when they noticed her face contorted in concentration as she tried to figure out what they were saying. Instead they smiled, flipped the list over, drew a curvy line and inserted some doodles of landmarks along the turns. They pointed down the road, then to one of the doodles. Marceline looked up and beamed when she found the landmark.
She thanked the vendor with a smile and then set off toward the landmark. When she reached it, she checked her little drawn map and looked around. Something in the indicated direction looked like the next drawing and she headed toward it. She followed these directions, starting to get a little nervous because the market stalls were thinning out. But the vendor who had given her the directions had been very kind... She decided to make it to the end of the map and see what she found. If there was nothing there then she'd follow the line back and keep looking at the market.
But once she reached the end, she realized that she'd been guided to an area with small shops. Looking in each window, one did in fact have the leafy green ingredient Marcy was after. She grinned and went in to get what she'd trekked all the way here for.
When she came out she reached into her coat pocket for her little map. But she found her pockets empty of the paper; all that was there were her keys and phone. Her eyes widened a little and her tail twitched nervously. "Rats," she muttered to herself. She pulled her phone out and called Fiona. Marceline had been confident in going to the market for her things, but now she was quite far away. Fiona answered right on the final ring, her voice distant.
"Hi, Marce. Sorry, I'm in the lab. Can you hear me?"
"Yes, I can hear you. I'm sorry to interrupt but I'm afraid I've gotten a bit turned around in the city."
"Oh dear! Where are you at?"
Marceline looked up at the shop sign and stuttered through the name of the place. Fiona barked a laugh and then said the name correctly. Both girls giggled at Marcy's butchering of the word before Fiona hummed.
"Alright, look around you. If I remember correctly there should be a barber shop near by."
Fiona had an impressive memory. She guided Marceline back home using her mental map of the area. The sisters giggled again about Marcy's impromptu adventure before hanging up. Marceline set to work preparing dinner, happy to have gotten some memories today as well as the groceries.
