As he wakes up from his slumber, Tianlong raises his head, watching the stars appear with empty white eyes. The Keldine can hear the hoot of an owl not too far away, but everything else is calm and silent. With slow movements, Tianlong gets up and approches the edge of the lake to lap some water.
Soon enough, he is ready to leave.Yes, it is time again.

Tianlong moves foward with a measured pace, then gradually switches to a fast run. His whole body begins to shine lightly as he starts to feel the surrounding energies flowing around him like water. With his imagination, the Keldine just has to pretend that the energy is condensating under his paws every time he has to make a leap, creating bright splashes of light at each step to support his weight.
The cold, but not unpleasant, glowing particles brushing against his fur is so familiar now that Tianlong doesn't pay it attention anymore. It is like walking in a puddle after rain, but without the part where he gets soaked at the end.

As he hops above the trees, Tianlong can feel tears gather in his eyes. Even after years learning to use his power, the natural energies are too strong and overflowing : what is not used is released in the form of glowing tears, lost in the wind behind him.
Luckily for the Keldine, it is not painful, so the inconvenience while flying is low. But it still has downsides; what once were beautiful shining eyes ended up becoming dull, like if they were lost in the fog, and his vision shows him a world with dimmed colors. This was the price Tianlong accepted to pay to use his ability.

During his childhood, his clan used to beliveve he was the physical incarnation of a god who could manipulate energies to protect his people. In all honesty, Tianlong has always been sure these beliefs were foolish.
Sadly, as he discovered his ability to run in the sky and lost the shine in his eyes, Keldines around him started to change. No longer were they friendly and smiling, gone were the mentions of that old god. Tianlong could hear the whispers behind him, those saying that those fast changes couldn't be natural. "Is he cursed ?" Some asked. "He signed a pact with a demon." Others said. Any and all reasons were good to explain why those eyes were so lifeless.
But the words that hurt the most were the ones said by his own family. They decided they didn't want to take any risk. If it's a disease, a curse, a pact... all are bad omens, so after concerting, they decided to exile Tianlong without any regret.

Since then, Tianlong’s life has been nothing but never-ending travel. Moving during the night has always been easier for him, as the strain put on his eyes is lighter without the light of the sun. But meeting new Keldines in the middle of the night is hard, and when Tialong is lucky enough to meet someone, they end up running away with the same excuse as his old clan wailing that those lifeless white eyes would bring them to their doom.
Sometimes, Tianlong's gaze ends up lost in the stars. “Why did all of this happen, where should I go, what should I do?” he would ask the moon. But like every night, the moon would not answer and the Keldine would feel more lonely than ever.

Finally, it is time for a new day to start when the sun starts to peek behind the mountains. Tianlong lazily jumps on the ground near a river surrounded by a lush vegetation. This would be a perfect place to rest after finding something to eat. With a sigh, the Keldine decides to look for a prey nearby. After all, living creatures tend to gather around sources of water, and it doesn't take to long for Tianlong to find a young deer for his meal.
Tired after all that running, Tianlong goes back to the spot he saw earlier and laid down, his head resting on his front legs. His eyes feel heavy and sleep claims him quickly.
Another uneventful night gone. It is time to rest again.

this was an incredibly difficult competition to judge, oh my gosh
the entries for this competition blew my mind, and I love every single idea yall came up with! The artwork and all the writing are incredible. Thank you to everyone who entered ;w;


@mooshyy - those illustrations stole my heart, they're so cute. I absolutely love the lore behind the universe you came up with! I've never heard of anything like that, it's both really fun and super interesting how magical abilities would be associated with the organs of a creature :O

@-Aeris - that moodboard is so nice and warm, and the shard wings are fantastic :O! I love the idea that they manifest and then vanish only at he start of the ability- i wonder if you'd still get glimpses of the wings + shards near the tail when hit directly by rays of light?

@gardog - the perspective in that pose is astounding, and I adore how there is a story written into the piece! The dialogue between the keldine and what I assume is the reader is super creative dude, I read it quite a few times myself xD It really solidifies the personality you had in mind for the keldine, and I really love that

@Romova - those wings are so dang gorgeous, and I love the texture of your linework! The pose + background work really well to accentuate those wings. Also, the name you chose is super pretty, probably my favorite pick out of the rest of the entries ;w;

@Fierce Wings - Your linework is extremely clean, and I really really love the pose you put the keldine in; it gives more of a dragon-like feel than a canine, which I favored a lot :> Relying on its mental state in order to fly is also an extremely interesting take, and I like how it would affect the eyes as well! I also really liked the moodboard you put together, it matches really well with your description + the keldine itself!

@Little Fish - okay first of all I am weak for weather-associated abilities, I am in love with the lightning idea being attracted to the keldine's fur. The description for how it works blows my mind- and the story!! the maps!! This was an entry I really highly considered, I love the worldbuilding and your writing is amazing. The explanation for the blank eyes is also a detail I really love that you incorporated; I really hope you will still be able to use what you came up with for another character, cause this whole idea was beautiful ;w; for this entry, i would like to create a RU! @nio - I so loved this misty idea, how ghost-like the keldine was made to be + how you managed to illustrate that in your piece. it's a really gorgeous image, I loved your entry so so much <33

@Paro - by stars i am in love with how you went about the prompt, I love the story behind the keldine + the entries that spoke about the keldine's discovery + how your animations tied into the story as being documented files. i just thought that was so dang cool- for this entry I would like to create a RU! @iron man - your entry is unbelievably high quality, I really loved zooming in and scrolling around to enjoy all the detals xD the shading is beautiful, the lines were crisp and clean, the effects were perfect for the piece w the description of the keldine's power. This was a really amazing, clear entry

@Corals Art Studio - I really admire traditional works, I've always found it very difficult to line sketches + especially color, which is something you did really well to accomplish in your entry! I love the halos composed of rain that keeps the keldine afloat, its another really creative take on how this keldine would fly
