story:
Helena had paused from her position, listening to the stories upon the winds. She hummed, surprise across her features. The Queen needed to know what she had been told. And thusly Helena headed towards the Queen's receiving room. As she was known to be a Wind-Talker, she was not questioned. The Queen nodded her head briefly. "Speak," she beckoned.
"My Queen, the Kingdom of the Seas, Atlantica, has made contact with the lands above. They have chosen an Ambassador, to aid in connecting their worlds. Do you believe the time has come for us to do the same?" The Queen considered this.
"...I am torn. As we both know, the reason we are cut off to start with was their treachery. But, perhaps, things change with time. I believe a test is in order."
"..A test my Queen?"
"Indeed. And this test will be conducted by you. But it will not be an easy test. I will be casting you down to the lands below, Helena. There you will be placed in the middle of nowhere, tasked with meeting goobies. Judge their merit, and that of their land. Then we can decide whether our lands will meet again." Helena swallowed hard, but nodded.
"If it is your will," she whispered, before she found herself blacking out. When she woke up, it was in no place she recognized. Surrounding her was a thicket of woods and plants. A... forest? She had heard of these. She could feel nothing of the winds here, blocked by the greens. She was lost and more than a little afraid. Her stomach was growling, and she knew without finding food she would starve. What did food look like here? Walking hesitantly, she eventually found a stream. Oh! Fish! She could eat those! She tried jumping upon them, but found they would splash out of her paws. Soon she was a soaking mess, miserable and about to cry.
"..Are you okay Miss?" Asked a low voice, which came out almost like a rumble. She looked up to find a massive goobie with a blood red scorpion-shaped tail and horns, wild brown fur, and claws. She jumped immediately, causing his ears to flatten. "Ah I am sorry, I did not mean to startle you!" She sniffed, tears streaming down her cheeks.
"No it's... I am lost! I am hungry! I... I do not know what I am doing and-" The larger goobie gave her as best of a smile as he could manage, sharp teeth and all.
"Then let me help you solve one of those problems. Come on, watch me. I'll show you how to get those sneaky fish..." And so they spent the next few hours fishing, and at the end of it they both had a sizable meal and full bellies. But night was arriving, and as it did Helena shuddered. The larger goobie stepped closer.
"Do not fear the forest, it is my home. I will protect all of those who step inside. Or... perhaps new friends? My name is Monteclaire but most call me Monty. Tomorrow, we will work on the other problem. You say you are lost? I know someone who knows his way everywhere. We can ask him. For now, let us rest..."
"Outside? On the ground?" Helena asked in disbelief, used to the plush cushions of her home.
"..You can rest against me, if it helps you feel better." She paused, but nodded as they settled in. And it did make her feel better. When day broke they started to travel, walking until they reached a mountainside. There at the edge was a wolf-like goobie, who turned to look at them both sternly.
"Sirius, can you help us? I fo-" Sirius stared them both down a moment.
"I cannot."
"Wait... why?" Monteclaire asked..
"I saw her arrival. The Heavens rejected her. A fallen agel. There must be a reason. As such, we cannot help her."
"Sirius! She is lost and helpless, we need to-" But no further words came. Monty sighed, gesturing for Helena to follow him away.
"He means well, but he is protective of the forest too. Calls himself the 'Guardian of the Woods.'" Helena meanwhile looked hurt, pensive. Was she fallen, now? Would she grow horns, a forked tongue? A long tail? Fear ran through her, until Monty's kind paw, placed itself gently on her shoulder. "...It will be okay. I'm not out of options yet. But the next goobie I know will be a bit tricky to get to. Take a few days. So... let us gather a few supplies okay?"
The trip was long, but along the way Monty showed her how to fish, hunt, gather greens... and shared stories to keep her company of the land and its other inhabitants. She found herself charmed, before they arrived in the front of a rather terrifying looking house. At the gates stood a goobie, with a mask for a face. "...Istovan. We need aid, and she needs a way home."
"What will you give in exchange?"
"...My goo. You said you wanted to experiment with a demigob's goo, yes? I will offer it freely." Istovan studied the pair a moment, before he nodded.
"Then the pact is sealed. I have a charm that will strengthen her wings so that she may return. In return, I will take as much of your goo to continue my experiments as I desire. It may very well kill you in the end. Shall you still agree?" Helena's eyes widened.
"Wait- kill? No!"
"The price shall be equal to the cost of the boon," Istovan remarked, before placing the charm upon Helena's neck. Before she could even stop herself, her wings were taking her home.
"MONTY!" She cried, only to find herself in front of the queen. "Let me go back! I need to make sure he does not die! I-" The Queen smiled softly.
"I know what our kingdom shall do now. Prepare yourself for your next journey..."
