Themis flops onto the bed, sinking into the plush mattress and blankets. She rolls herself up in comfort and reflects on her confrontation with Toma. He really managed to give her a fright, despite large ears being able to detect his heavy, bumbling footsteps from far away. She knew it was a big kalon approaching, but thought they were just going to wait in line to sign the guest book... not approach and address her! Although he was friendly enough, she was still shaken up at the surprise of his presence. She sighed and stared at the ceiling of her lodgings reflecting on why she decided on such a popular spot to vacation. Yes, she wanted to get out and meet some other kalons but she didn't think there would be this many other kals here in such a wintery location. Her hopes for a quiet, uneventful getaway with the snow dampening the echoes of normal life were off of the table.

She briefly groans with regret, but manages to pull herself from the comforting weight of the covers to start to explore; no sense in wasting time in bed regardless of the circumstances. A cup of tea would be nice to warm her paws, and a freshly baked pastry to compare to her own baking. Maybe she'll learn something new, she thinks. Themis decides it'd be best to start towards the cafe, equipped with thick earmuffs to deafen the chatter of other kals in hopes of not getting spooked once more.

Prompt 1: What does your kalon want to see first?

Katsune loves being able to see stars shining freely at night, without the light pollution of cities or even smaller towns around to silence them. As a result, she's constantly torn between wanting to live remotely and being unwilling to leave the comforts of urbanization and the close proximity to her friends. Small towns can be a bit of a toss up between welcoming and exclusionary, and she can't envision herself as outgoing enough to combat a less than friendly environment. As a middle ground, she settles on vacations to be able to enjoy nature and participate in unique festivities from around the world, including the Winter Festival in Kalokairi Village. While there are many interesting activities to do and places to go, she plans on visiting the stargazing tent first and introduce herself to the kalons working there. If nothing else she knows she wants to spend as many nights possible looking out into the night sky and learning about the constellations that can be seen from this remote village. She's hopeful they'll even have stories to share about the constellations that she hasn't heard before, or even stories that she has heard, just told in a new way. There's something comforting about how stars and our understanding of them are somehow both consistent and changing.

the first thing asuka felt as he came too was the only slightly mind-numbing pain currently hammering down on his skull. raising his paw up to the trouble spot, he cringed as skin made contact with skin and the pain grew more intense. he feverishly drew back his paw, and that was when he became aware of a second feeling - his skin felt as though it were aflame.

the realization brought him into reality, and he rapidly scanned his surroundings. mountains cropped up on all sides, enclosing the snowy valley in which asuka lay. the scenery was unfamiliar - which was no surprise to asuka - but he could tell it wasn't unkind. not far from where he lay now sat a quaint village, or at least from what asuka could see it seemed so. he fought against the frozen snow, pushing himself up off the ground as he continued to take in his surroundings. the way his body ached made it hard to move but he trudged on towards the village nonetheless.

as he entered the bounds of the village he looked around, for what he wasn't quite sure - but quick enough he found it. he stood in front of a cabin, one he'd just barely spotted from the town square, and the sign on the door proved it to be what he was looking for. it perhaps would not have been his first choice under normal circumstances, but given his current state it felt quite fortuitous. with a shallow breath in he pushed open the door to the medic station - and he hoped that the rest of his time here would not be quite so unpleasant as this.

heaven sat on her bed lacing up her snow boots, her tail tapping excitedly on the hard wooden floor, even the floor boards were warm to the touch. her heart was thrilled to be in a winter wonderland for once, the forest where she grew up was always warm and seemed to carry the air of spring, the winters were short if there were any to begin with. she pondered what she would see first as she snuggled her hands into her gloves. using her soft mittens to place a warm beanie on her head, weaving the knitted cap around her antlers. bobbing her head a bit she tied the end strings together to cover her ears snuggly.

once all together she looked out the window in her room, watching the snow fall briefly before she couldn't contain herself anymore. she excitedly rushed out of the room in her snow gear and rushed out of the inn. she flew into the nearest snowbank, burrowing into the fresh powder. heaven began giggling and rolling out, covering her whiskers in light snowflakes, grabbing bits of snow and throwing it about herself. laying on her back and spread out her arms and legs, waving them about in pure joy. she loved the cold flakes seeping through her sweater. i guess the first thing she wanted to see was the grey cloudy sky, watching the white specks float down and dance in the wind. she took a few breaths as her excitement turned into content, her eyes gazing in awe at the scene before her. she watched her breath plume out in front of her feeling her fur fluff up against the cold and her cheeks reddened. she probably shouldn't be out for long.. maybe just a few moments more. { 296 }

Mitsue sat down on the bed with a small sigh. He could feel the cold from the outside creeping it’s way into his room. Snow was a new thing to him, his home town barely even rained, he didn’t know how to handle it. He was waiting for his boyfriend, Kasai, to show up but it appeared that he was running late.. what a surprise. Maybe I should go enjoy myself while waiting he thought while pulling out the map of the area. Ice fishing looked fun or perhaps skiing. But he should wait for Kasai to do anything like that.

Finally Mitsue decided to just walk around and see where he would end up. The Kalon stood up and headed to the door before realizing he would need a jacket in this weather. “Do I even have one?” He muttered to himself digging into his suitcase full of clothes. Eventually he found a small thin jacket underneath all of his clothes. Well that’s not going to work. The first place he would have to go is a clothing store. He put on the thin jacket he had and stepped out into the cold. The snow crunched under his feet as he walked into the town. There has to be a clothing store somewhere right? Surely he wasn’t the only guest to make the mistake of not bringing a thick jacket. He shivered as he pulled the jacket more around himself “wow.. way to go Mitsue” he mumbled to himself stopping in front of a store. They have to have one, he hoped. With a deep sigh he stepped into the store hoping to find a thick jacket for the snow. [281 words]

Visiting the village of Kalokairi wasn't originally what Hainani had in mind for her spring retreat; something a little more secluded with far fewer bodies was preferable...but, word of unbelievable scenery had soon enough convinced her. There was sure to be a trail or two she could venture out to on her own. Fingers crossed. Aside from the scenery, a few Kalons she had passed by on the way to her lodge had been chatting about reindeer and somewhere to whittle wood? While she had never seen a reindeer before, it seemed like a popular attraction that was bound to have far too many people there, and she'd never tried whittling before, so starting off with it seemed like a poor idea. Maybe another day she would push past her comfort zone. For today, Hainani had decided she would check out the small lake behind the Inn - surely it would be less crowded there, and it was close by that if she had changed her mind, it would be a quick return to her cozy housing.

To her delight, the pond was in fact fairly empty. Only a handful of other Kalons had settled themselves on the frozen water and seemed to be fishing. How fun! Fishing was something she had done before, but never ice fishing! One Kalon in particular had met eyes with her as she had walked over to one of the open fishing holes. He too was on his own and seemed kind enough. He offered up the extra fishing rod that had been sitting next to him and told her of his unfortunate luck in catching anything so far. She wasn't typically one to strike up a conversation with a stranger, but she was pleased to find that he was fine keeping the conversation going on his own, while also allowing for comfortable periods of silence. His name was Koi, as ironic as it seemed, and she made sure to comment on it in an attempt at her own friendly conversation.

The two stayed out at the pond for a couple of hours; they shared small conversations and enjoyed the overall quietness the frozen lake had to offer. It seemed their luck hadn't changed from when Hainani first arrived, but nonetheless, she was proud of herself for branching out and meeting someone new. Maybe this frozen retreat would be better than she had imagined.

As Chip sets down all of their ski gear in the warm room, they take a deep sigh. They haven't traveled this far from home before. The small town that they live in with their parents is nothing compared to this little rustic town. As they unpack all of their belongings, they found a small scrapbook that their dad had packed for them. It was a blank brown cover that was bonded with old rivets. As Chip flipped through the empty pages of the book, they stumbled across a small note from their mom. It read,

"I hope you enjoy the retreat! We love you and are s proud of you for going out in the world on your own! Check your bag for another surprise from us! Love you sugar, Mom <3"

A smile grew on Chip's face as they closed the book. They shuffled around in their bag to find a camera with film. The leather strap that was connected to it was soft and smooth to the touch. Once they finished taking care of the rest of the stuff in their bag, Chip grabbed their puffy winter coat and camera and set out for something to see.

The snow was crunchy under their boots as they set out for the ski slopes to watch the other kals perform tricks and ski with grace. As they waddled their way over to the bottom of the slope, snow started falling down. As Chip's eyes met the ski, a small flake fell on the tip of their nose. A giant smile spread across their face. For the first time in their life, they finally can say they have seen falling snow.

Ibuki had never been outside in the cold for very long before, let alone ever even seen snow! It had never snowed where he was from, but boy, was he enjoying it right now! It was cold to the touch, and he wasn't quite sure how to walk in it - stumbling about and tripping over his own four paws every now and then. He saw other kalons, mostly kits, playing in the snow. They were making snow angels, hopping around, having snowball fights... It all seemed like so much fun! He wished he had friends to enjoy the festivities and snow with, but it seemed he wasn't ever quite able to make friends, no matter how hard he tried. After being accused of being behind his brother's death, despite no evidence, kalons never really seemed to like his company - Although he was, in fact, proven to be innocent.
Still, he wished to join in the festivities. He probably should be more excited about the activities and games, but he was more excited about the snow!
He enjoyed the pure white surroundings and the cold air- Up until he let out a little sneeze.
"Oh, right,,, I can't be out too long.."
He sighed to himself, mentally cursing his low immunity. He wanted to stay outside, but he needed to get someplace warm before he caught a fever. So, he headed to the inn he was staying at for the duration of the event, entering and grabbing the nearest blanket he found to drape it over himself. How do other kalons defend from the cold? He looked outside again, tilting his head. He saw kalons with coats and mittens and hats,,, He supposed, silently, he would probably need to go shopping for that stuff soon. Maybe then he'd last a bit longer.
In other words, he already saw what he wanted to see first; the snow!
