"how do they fit into your colony? do they have a hard time finding their place?"
500 words min. or 1 halfbody
(626 words)
Thea's family came searching for sanctuary, fleeing the conflict that consumed their old colony; her parents had given up everything they had to get themselves to safety. All their wealth and influence had been used to ferry them to this distant land. Thea herself could not remember the trip, too young to remember much other than the warmth of her mother's embrace. Her parents had chosen to travel the Forgotten Sun Colony based on the stories told to them by a family friend, a merchant who had a trader that worked in the area. The Colony had no connection to their previous colony, nor the enemy of their previous colony; it would a complete fresh start for the whole family.
They did not expect the need for trials though. Thea would later be taught that it was customary for newcomers to be tested and found worthy to be considered members of the colony; if they became members, they would be taken care of the by entirety of the colony, and the colony would not need to worry about strangers lurking in the dark, waiting for an opportunity to strike at them. It was of course voluntary, they could not nor would they ever force a stranger to undertake the trials, but they would not allow them to stay on colony territory, and there was little food to be found at the edges of the territories due to the terrain.
Naturally, her parents went through the trials to join the colony, but given her young age, they allowed her to have honorary status, to be raised along side two other that she would later consider her older brother and sister. She never questioned why her parents did not live with them nor why she never moved to live with them after they became official members, until she reached adulthood. Blood relation was never a big deal to her, never seem relevant until her older brother had taken her aside and explained it.
When her family first petitioned to join the colony, it was decided that due to Thea's young age and the difficulties of the trials, that she would be adopted into the family with kits around her age. Her parents could not take care of her and undergo the trials, and the colony would not allow them to remain on their territories if they weren't going to attempt trials. The colony made her parents chose between remaining a family and survival; and as an adult, Thea knew without having to put much thought into it that her parents wanted her to have the best chance of surviving, especially should they fail the trials. Her parents were only allowed to keep that title, to keep the parentage rights to calling themselves her parents, only because they had proved themselves worthy by completing the trials. Had they failed, she would have never been told that she had been adopted, unless it became important to do so.
Her brother did not explain what the trials entailed, by she knew by the look in his eyes, that they were no easy feat. Thea could also recall the way her father would suffer terribly during the cold weather, and the scar across her mother's face.
She had stormed away in a fit of tears and anger; had gone out into the forest to scream out all of her feelings. Her brother did not follow her, but he was waiting up for her when Thea came back in the dead of night. He helped Thea to her room, supporting her as she barely had the strength to stand, and directed her to her nest. He did not say anything, but he had meat and fruit from supper waiting her by her nest.
"I am sorry Thea.. I am sorry you had to find out this way."
