Endless blue waves....
An open sky, filled with clouds carefully set on the horizon....
A strong wind, strong enough to fill these sails and push this woodcarved ship across the Great blue....
This vessel...
This journey....
this thirst for danger and endless adventures.... And MEAT!!
Oh what it is to be a pirate.
______________________________
I was found when I was just a baby.
They said that I was just floating in a basket, just along the shore.
No one knew where I came from, or how I ended up here in Port Kani Umi, there wasn't even any debris that washed up with me to suggest a possible ship wreck.... So where did I come from?
_________
Even though no one could solve this mystery, I was taken in and welcomed by the locals of this small fishing port.
I was given a place to call home.
Now I never really grew up with "parents" as I was still just an orphan as far as anyone could tell, but that doesn't mean I grew up miserable. The people in the orphanage treated me with kindness, and I was even taken in and raised by many different people, they all tried to help teach me many different things in life. So even though I don't have "parents" that doesn't mean I never had a family.
Now growing up wasn't always the easiest,
I did find myself with many complications.
I guess you could say I was a bit of a clumsy troublemaker. Anything I tried to do, I often messed up on and would usually make a disaster happen.
And growing up in school it was quickly discovered that I should NOT be made a captain of anything. My team always lost when I was captain... I even struggled with trying to help at the fish market. Which should have been easy!! Because all you gotta do is toss a fish from one stand, wrap that fish up, then toss it to another stand so that fish could be sold. But for me I would always end up missing the fish and it would either fall to the ground or hit a customer. Everyone in the market had grown tired of me and would often turn me away, all but Hanku.
He was an older man with a grey beard, but he always had kind eyes. He was the one person in this fish business who would always let me help. Whenever I messed up, he would often do the same thing I did on purpose and sarcastically blame it on his old age while giving me a teasing wink.
I always liked him the most as he was the kindest person to me in Kani Umi.
He would often take me out on his old boat and tell me stories of these that were beyond our small port. These of pirates, and danger, things of mystery and wonder.
Every story, every detail filled me with exhilaration, it lit a fire in me.
I too wanted adventures!! I wanted to see the wind fill my sails!! And travel the world.
And since then I would often find myself playing pretend pirates everywhere I went.
I would stand in Hanku's boat with a stick in my hand, pretending to sail across the great ocean. Hanku would only smile at me from a distance while he worked,
and as I would play Hanku would often school me in the ways of a pirate, like how they would talk, how they would stand on their ships gazing out at the horizon, he even taught me how they probably bury their treasure.
And once I got the ways of a pirate down, I'll never forget when Hanku gave me a very special gift. It probably won't have seemed like much to others, but to me it meant everything when Hanku gave me his straw fishing hat. As far back as I could remember Hanku was always wearing that hat, it was like his treasure. He told me that I was really on my way to become a pirate so he thought it only natural for me to have a captain's hat. And it was since that day, his treasure became my treasure.
Hanku always knew so much about pirates, and about the ocean, and he was always open to sharing them with me, but whenever I tried asking how he knew all that he did, he would always just give me an amused smile before saying, "when you live to be as old as me you get to learn a lot of things."
And it was like that for years, I would often hangout and listen to his tales, and be left forever wondering of his knowledge.
It wasn't until one fateful day did I learn the truth to his tales.
Over the years Hanku had grown into an old man and had grown more and more tired, he had quit his job and stopped going out on the water, and he chose to spend what was left of his life in peace.
I would often find him just sitting in his boat that was tied to the dock. He would just sit there feeling the current flow beneath him.
He was truly a man after the ocean's heart.
One day when I went down to the water I found Hanku standing near the shore looking out at the horizon.
He slowly turned his gaze towards me before looking back at the horizon and speaking words I would never forget,
"You know I became a fisherman so that I could continue staying out on the ocean... I guess it's true, when that love first starts it never leaves you... Starting life off as a pirate, and ending it as a retired fisherman isn't exactly how I thought my life would go... But hey it lead me down the road to where I got to know you, kid, didn't It? So it's not all bad.
It kinda feels strange telling someone my greatest secret, that I, a fisherman of Kani Umi was once a fierce pirate who sailed across the ocean with a crew and everything... But I'm glad that someone is you. You're a good kid. You know, those stories you loved so much, well those were all stories of my youth. Guess you finally know where I got my knowledge from, huh?
I truly loved my life as a pirate, being out on the sea every day.
New adventures with every sunrise!
You know it was once my greatest dream to sail the entire ocean, and see all the wonders of the world, and achieve the greatest title one could earn. To become the Pirate King. For years I strived for this...
But I never came close, soon the seas were filled with those who were much younger... And I lost my fire, so I retired.
I came here and watched as my crew sailed off to continue their adventure without me.
And I've been living in a shadow of regret ever since... That is until you showed up.
You... A bright eyed troublemaker who let this old man live his glory days all over again... You really are something, thank you, for humoring this old man for so many years, you truly are my dearest friend."
I could only stand there in disbelief at everything I had just been told, at the same time it was like an answer I had already known, an answer that I had known for years was finally confirmed.
Ever since I was a kid I would always pretend that Hanku was a pirate, I guess I had always secretly wanted him to be.
And now I know for certain he is, my greatest friend.
Hanku lived on for a few more years since then, sharing more with me, of his tales and journeys in his days as a pirate.
He told me about the many battles he fought, the treasure he gathered.
And the legendary Pirate King! A title that he had once longed for.
Anymore these days seem to go by in a blink of an eye, except for those times, the times of pirates.
And I continued to listen until all those stories met their ending.
And I had to say goodbye to my greatest friend.
And after a few more years I was finally old enough to go out on my own, and because of that time spent working with Hanku I was able to save up enough money to get me started on my new journey.
I may always be that last place loser,
I may be the worst at giving orders,
I may not know how to sail, or how to read a chart or map.
I may even be the worst pirate to date,
But I will become the next Pirate King, one way or another!!
Because I'm a retired fisherman who became a pirate.
