Rice likes to run.

No, of course he's not running because he's being chased! That would be absurd. There's definitely, absolutely, nothing at all behind him. He's just running for fun. He does not constantly have the feeling that something -- something evil -- is looking over his shoulder, following him, always juuust barely out of sight. He just likes the feeling of the wind in his fur, the ground against his paws, and the relief of finally escaping the crushing feeling of being watched.

Okay, so maybe he does feel like he's being followed. He won't ever admit it to the others though; he's too afraid of them making fun of him. At least, that's how he justifies it to himself, to help keep his fear under control. In reality, he's terrified that the presence he feels will do something bad if he mentions its existence to another cat.

He's not sure what it is, or if it's even real (though it certainly feels real), but what he does know is that running is the one thing that makes it go away, even if only for a short while. The tom can frequently be spotted racing across fields and down roads, tufted tail waving wildly in the wind behind him as he charges at full speed at nothing in particular. It's thrilling, freeing -- and not entirely because it lets him escape the evil feeling around him. He does just love to run too.

Prompt: i wrote it and i'm not entirely sure what's happening

He watches the world through sparkling eyes, his tail twitching every now and then — in amusement, in sorrow, in worry and regret. Most often in worry and regret.

“We can fix it... right, Tiún?” the fawn feline asks, nearly begs. Seeing others in pain… is painful, and their Pride, their clan (of broken pieces) is so obviously wrong; the sinister aura, the mother portal devouring herself from the inside out.

“Your obsession with fixing everything must stop,” Tiún replies, dismissive of the suffering they’re forced to witness. And yet — “Wherever you go, Léo, know that I must follow.”

Léo half-grins. “Thank you,” he murmurs, though the noise is muffled when he buries his face into Tiún’s abundance of fur.

Elsewhere, another feline wakes. He watches the world through sparkling amber eyes, his tail twitching every now and then. He doesn’t bother wondering why, because—

“I will do everything in my power…”

He trails off, noticing the speculative gazes on him. Cold and calculating, the seraphs warning; the den closing in, their claws unsheathed; cruel jaws, swirling thoughts. The wild majick circulating through the air… is suffocating.

The deity lowers his gaze, projecting as the predators would want. Where went the High North, their vibrance and brilliance? Where went their knowledge of healing, of arts and dances and songs of growth? What drove them underground where the vermin all hide?

Léo flees the den as the basilisk who stole the serpent’s scales, a higher being hiding amongst his own. Beneath his breath, he admits: “I can’t fix us overnight.”

Lifetimes later, dimensions away, a fawn tabby mewls into existence. He has a goal; a heart of gold, a soul of steel. He knows, he grows.

But mostly, he knows.

He tackles the kitten gently, likely the softest touch it’s felt in its short life — softer than its mother’s, even. Apollo deposits the bundle of joy back to its littermates, allowing the more energetic ones to play with his tufted tail.

“You can leave now, docker,” Seraph Veríscite says in her grating voice; it’s more of a command than anything.

“What if I want to stay?” the fawn feline asks.

Verís glares at him; it’s only his knowledge that lets him know the turmoil she hides.

“No right docker wants to stay in the Mecca, docker,” the seraph, the jem-broker spits.

Despite the hostility, Apollo half-grins. “Well then, maybe I’m not a right docker,” he responds. In his mind, he laments: Why is it so hard, for you, for them? Help should not be an alien concept...

“Léo, do you know what recreation is?” Tiún demands, darkness against the sunlight. “It is a refreshment. A diversion from the troubles of everyday life. Fixing the world is not recreation. If anything, it is a quest worse than labor.”

“Recreation,” Léo refutes, “is an activity that encourages the soul. If bringing happiness to others brightens my day, then I may consider it recreation.”

Tiún mutters something beneath his breath, then: “You are subjecting yourself to fruitless drudgery!”

“You have no faith in the light! It will pay off... eventually.”

“Eventually...“

“Anything is better than our wasting away in the stars!” Léo suddenly hisses, and must he bring up their eternal imprisonment? This argument will bring them nowhere—though,

“If helping others truly makes you feel better about our miserable situation… then so be it.”
