show name: Hatred Blinds
call name: Blink
gender: Male
age: 2 years
harness color:
prompt: Blink has lost his confidence and self motivation after he lost his sight.

He isn’t confident enough to go outside alone, or even be alone. He gets scared really easily as he can’t see what is coming towards him. He can’t go on walks without randomly stopping out of fear. He is learning to trust again, learning to acknowledge that there are trustworthy creatures still, even when blind. It takes time, but he is getting there.

Blink doesn’t believe himself to be like everyone else, to be normal. He sees himself as a misfit, a problem, even though others try to tell him he’s not, to try to tell him he’s still loved even though he doesn’t have his sight. The ones who truly love him don’t give up on him, they don’t turn him away because he is different, they just love him even more because of it. Just the poor blind soul doesn’t realize it yet. He just truly is a special boy.

show name: Life Goes On
call name: Nakia
gender: Female
age: 7yrs
harness color: gold and black
prompt:
Nakia wasnt always blind. She remembers the days where she could see everything. Lush grass fields, smiling faces they are but memories to her now. After a terrible accident happened Nakia lost her sight. When she first learned she couldnt see anymore she panicked and crashed into multiply objects in her panicked state. She felt alone and scared unsure of what her purpose in life was anymore. Most times Nakia didnt feel like moving and she for the better part she laid in her bed. She felt like a dog that couldnt see was a useless dog. She had just given up on life or so she thought. When her owners brought Nayeli into the house, Nakia pricked her ears and listened to the boisterous pup. Still feeling useless she never tried to engage with the pup. But Nayeli had other plans as she constantly tried to engage Nakia to get her to play or chase her. Slowly but surely Nakia felt something stir inside her, something she thought she lost ages ago. Soon Nakia was starting to run around and play. Most times she wanted to lay back in the safety of her bed, but Nayeli came along and gave her the support she needed. If not for Nayeli, Nakia wouldnt know that she is still a special dog with or without her eyesight.

kennel/stable: Baltic Husky Reserve
show name: BHR Silent Moments
call name: Momo
gender: Female
age: 2 years
harness color: Pastel blue
prompt: Momo knew she was different her entire life, and she tried to not let it affect her. But nearly every day, she heard the other dogs being hooked up to the sled, getting excited and riled up. As she just sat around, everyone else was out racing across the snow. When the other dogs come back, they would all talk their practice, what they'd seen and heard. She'd never experienced anything like what the other dogs experienced daily, and Momo couldn't help but be angry and upset at her lack of sight. But one day, the musher called her over. She was lifted into the sled, and buckled into a harness. The musher had noticed Momo's upset at not being able to be included and had come up with a solution. Although she couldn't run with the other dogs, she could still share the experience by riding in the sled.

    show name: --
    call name: Miffy
    gender: Female
    age: 13 years old
    harness color: Artist Choice
prompt: Having been born without her sight, Miffy isn't aware of a life any different than her own, but she is aware that it isn't the average experience. As she has gotten older, her reservations about her blindness impact her less and less. When she was younger she struggled a lot and allowed her blindness to negatively affect her; now that she has grown up she tries not to dwell on the past, but that doesn't stop her mind from wondering from time to time . . .

For Miffy, the hardest part of living without sight had always been interacting with other dogs and people, especially since she is unable to read their body language. Off leash dogs and wandering children were Miffy's worst nightmare - dogs randomly coming up behind to sniff her or children trying to pet her without permission from her owner and without making her aware of their presence always spiked her anxiety. Her owner was on the receiving end of a lot of angry shouting from parents and dog owners who didn't appreciate Miffy growling or snapping in the direction of the assailant as a means of telling them to back off. Although she never hurt anyone or anything, the number of occasions Miffy's boundaries were disrespected and she was expected to be punished, led to her having to wear muzzles on walks - which also worked to simply keep children from approaching her without asking.

    Image

From here Miffy began being taken to obedience classes to build up her confidence around strange people and strange dogs. Once her human parents were comfortable, they removed the muzzle again, but her harness was now plastered in signs telling people not to pet her and keep in mind that she is a nervous dog. As she got older, they stopped taking Miffy to obedience classes and switched her to trailing classes with their other dogs, which she really seemed to enjoy. This introduced her to being in closer contact to strange dogs when she began to take part in group trails. She is a lot more accustomed to be around unknown dogs now, but occasionally she will still be spooked and attempt to dart away before returning to attempt play - which is fine when she is off leash, but this can lead to pulling her owner over or tangling the leash around ankles, which isn't the most fun.

    Image

When Miffy was two years old her owners brought home a puppy, a ridiculously rambunctious puppy that would clamber all over her and bounce around, play bowing and yipping. Miffy wouldn't have known how much of an impact this dog would have on her, but Snowball was about to become her best friend. The little ball of fluff drew Miffy out of her shell, unlike any other dog had before, though it did take some grumbling and snapping on Miffy's part as she tried to establish boundaries with the obnoxious puppy. Now the pair are often seen tearing up with garden as they sprint in circles after one another, disturbing the neighbours with their vocal play as they chase and wrestle one another. Snowball's playstyle is very much adapted to mesh with Miffy and account for her inability to read body language, which is why they are so vocal, they use a lot of yipping and barking to convey their excitement for one another. Even now Miffy and Snowball are both over 10 years old and are showing no signs of slowing down.

Miffy no longer has to worry about strange dogs and wandering children. When it comes to dogs, typically Snowball will introduce herself first as she is generally very outgoing and will initiate play which will then draw Miffy in. This gives Miffy the choice to stay with her owners or play, though now she usually picks play. Once Snowball has established that the dog is friendly is usually when Miffy will move in to introduce herself and the new group of canine friends will tear around together. Miffy's all time favourite game is to play chase, so it is her go to for playing with new dogs and on the rare occasion that she will initiate play with a new dog, that will be the game they play. With children, Snowball's bright pink tail tends to capture a lot of attention which allows Miffy to recognise the presence of the child as well as for her owner's to discuss with the children and/or their parents that Miffy is nervous and talk through how to introduce themselves properly.

    kennel/stable: solas kennels
    show name: solas's thursday's child
    call name: castiel
    gender: male
    age: one year
    harness color: northern lights green
    prompt:

after his mother was found wandering the streets heavily pregnant, she was taken into a breed specific rescue, and from there, cas found his way into solas kennels at nine weeks old. having never had eyesight to begin with, cas settled into his new home fairly well - it took him a few days to figure out his new surroundings and stop running into and banging off things. he eventually learned the layout of the kennels - though he stills has accidents, of course, when things are moved out of their regular place, but for the most part, cas navigates his home just fine. he always walks a little slow when he hears other dogs around, trying to avoid running straight into someone.

learning how to interact with new dogs was a strange experience, as he never had much of a problem with his siblings - having grown up with each other, and several others being blind, they adapted their play right from the beginning. the other puppies that were in the kennel at the time proved to be a little too boisterous, and cas quickly found himself getting frustrated when he was bowled into and the like. it was quickly decided to instead introduce him to some of the older members of the kennel and calmer youngsters who were in harness training, and there cas began to blossom.

meeting dogs is always a pain, especially those that have never interacted with a blind dog before and rely purely on body language to convey their intentions. cas relies on very gentle touches, play bowing and bouncing out to tap one of his paws against his playmates, and little wuffs and chuffs. while the dogs of solas kennels have adapted with him, and dogs he interacts with regularly, but strangers are far too bouncy and come at him too quickly - sometimes he's barely realised another dog is in front of him before he's getting tackled. it's just not nice!

boredom, however, can be cas's biggest issue. visual stimuli obviously isn't possible, which means when things are quiet, he easily gets bored. and a bored cas is a cas that's just looking for trouble, trying to escape the house and go walkabout following interesting smells or chew whatever feels nice into oblivion - even something potentially dangerous or valuable. puzzle toys with strong smelling treats have been wonderful in keeping him amused, and so has leaving on the radio or television, especially on dog-friendly channels. while he loves music - he has an excellent 'sing' trick - hearing birds and other little critters will capture his attention for hours on end.
