To win this cat, write about Fennel!
Your writing can be about literally anything, as long as it's CS appropriate,
and Fennel is the main character/focus of the story. It also has to make sense!
Please don't use voice to text Sushi 😭 /lh

The winner will be chosen by content quality! There will also be a RU for whoever writes
the most words within the timeframe -- but again, your writing must make sense.
(If the winner wrote the most, the RU will go to whoever wrote the second most)

Ends when I finish designing the cat.
(There won't be a warning before this happens;
any edits or posts made after the closing post will be disqualified!)

fennel paused, the tabby cat's ears pricked as they listened for the tiny, rapid pulse of nearby prey. hunting had been rough this past moon as leafbare approached, but fennel didn't let the cold chill get to them. scanning the browning, brittle grass, their eyes caught on a tiny, thin brown mouse. better than nothing, they thought to themself as they lowered into a hunting crouch, pawsteps light on the ground. keeping their tail still, eyes fixed on the mouse, energy coiled tight in their back legs, fennel prepared to pounce.
with a strong leap, they pushed off against the ground, paws landing square on the tiny animal. before it could make a sound, fennel quickly bit into the back of its neck, purring as it fell still under their paws.

    yep, they've still got it.

xxxA shift in the wind caused the grass to part away from Fennel's tired gaze, revealing a silvery pool of water. Silverpelt's reflection speckled the ripples with tiny, blinking stars, almost as if to beckon Fennel closer. Almost as if igniting a tiny flame, the sight of water gave Fennel the strength to push forward, eagerly dipping their muzzle to the pool's surface.

xxxHow many days had it been? Or was it weeks now?

xxxIt was difficult to remember anything, now. With fatigue pulling at Fennel's muscles and the burn of hunger deep in their belly, all Fennel could think about was a single word: survive. Survive their exit from the clan. Survive the exhaustion. Survive starvation and dehydration. Survive, survive, survive.

xxxLapping at the pool of water, Fennel could almost feel each droplet workings its magic in their throat. Repairing dry, cracked skin. Giving life to a lost voice; how long had it been since they talked? There was nobody to talk to. Nobody but Silverpelt and its ever-watchful eyes. As the water worked to restore life to the hollow cat, they began to remember. Stories about Silverpelt; about the ancestors that now hunted across its streaky beams. Were they watching Fennel?

xxxWith the rush of water beginning to wear off, Fennel could feel the fatigue settling back into their bones. In a near-collapse, they allowed their feet to spread beneath them, succumbing to the cool earth below. Fennel would survive another night, sprawled beneath the endless stretch Silverpelt.

Prompt:
Fennel had been living this life for a long, long time. By this point, they could barely remember living in a Clan, and they could hardly think how it would feel to return to that life. There was none of the freedom, none of the adventure... nothing they'd come to know and love about their free roaming life.

Of course, there weren't any of the cons, either. It got a little lonely, wandering the plains, the moors, the forests and deserts and snow. They had a few friends, of course - but they found they worried about them much more than they had their few friends back in their old Clan. Whether that was because the Clan was actually safer, or just because their Clan friends were prone to talking about their heritage behind his back, was still up for debate, honestly. But it was still marginally more comfortable than wondering whether they were alive - had they just gone for an oddly long walk and gotten themselves lost again? Or was that really it this time? It was tough to know at times, and it always stressed them out when they had to get a stranger to loan a paw in finding them. They loved meeting other cats - it was one of their favourite parts of the wandering life, along with exploring new places - but they did hate to be a burden, even if it was only on behalf of their directionless loner friends. A burden was all they'd felt like back in their Clan - they hadn't left home, left everything they'd ever known, just to have that feeling again. And from strange cats, cats they'd probably never see again, at that. Would this be their only impression of them? A bumbling fool who can't keep track of their friends, who relies on others for such simple tasks? It was a burden often resting in their mind, something they could never quite seem to shake.

Their friends, though they had very little sense of direction, always reassured them it wasn't true, when they did confide. It wasn't often that they did. They supposed that was leftover from their lovely ex Clanmates as well. Maybe that was why they tried so hard to appear charming to every cat they met - though, of course most of that charm was natural ;). But maybe they just couldn't stand to be perceived like that again. Like they were... half of a cat.

Fennel had many friends, both within Clans and out, whether they be kittypets or loners like them. Some of those cats... well, they were sure some of them had to be half-blooded like them. Different from their friends and family. It made them feel a little closer to them - a little less ostracized, outcasted. They were lucky to have met them all. To have shared so many warm meals, to have peered a glimpse into so many other cats lives, and maybe even have been let into some of their hearts - just as a charming, handsome acquaintance of course. Fennel was lucky. They knew they were lucky.

But still... on some days, those really bad days, that popped up once in a while for no reason other than to make them feel down on that luck... they wondered if all the new friends in the world would fill the gap in their heart the old ones had left. Maybe they just weren't meant to feel whole. Maybe those cats had been right all along - there was just something wrong with them, down to their core.

But those thoughts were exactly the type they'd run away from when they left the Clan - they didn't have to think like that anymore. They were free, and they could let all of that negativity fly off on the winds that didn't reach their old Clan, their old life. All of those thoughts weren't true, anyway - at least, they hoped not. They kept telling themselves so, and their friends did too, so logically they probably were false. The only trick was to keep on believing that.

Somehow, someway the feline had wandered too far. Too far indeed. Perhaps this creature's time has come to an end, staring about with wide eyes as the feline happened to have placed themself into a bit of a sticky situation. The tabby blinked, eyes searching for a way out of this mess. Only what seemed like moments ago, the lad had settled down upon a stone to rest. Now, the cat was surrounded by water and unable to see any sort of shoreline, this was quite the predicament. Now what?

"Hmm." Fennel mused quietly, ears twitched as they turned to glance about to no avail. Sticking a paw into the water, the feline attempted to see if they could feel the bottom, but there was no such thing under the surface. Only water. They could've sworn a fish had swam by at some point, scales brushing against their paw. Peering into the depths though, the tabby saw no such thing. Weird..
"Well, I can't stay here forever." The tabby blinked, growing worried. "What even happened? Can anyone hear me?!" The tabby cried, but there was no answer. "Oh well...maybe I'll just- swim. That'll do. I think."

So, the feline slipped into the sea, beginning to swim out into the unknown. Strange that the rock still remained when the rest of the world seemed to disappear before their eyes. Or well, maybe not. But still! Perhaps after awhile, something of interest would come into view. Something.

Fennel was quick to grow tired though. As the feline glanced back in hopes of returning to the beloved stone, their eyes widened as they noticed it had disappeared. Uh oh. Now what were they to do? Swim forever? Well, that was out of the question. They'd grow too exhausted with time. Perhaps, Fennel would be lost to sea forever. "Forever is a long time..."

Suddenly, the feline felt that they were not alone. Something was nearby. What could it be? Something good or something harmful? Yellow eyes flickered about nervously, before the waters began to part ahead of them. What was that? A giant fish?

Perhaps. Or perhaps a fish-cat. Or catfish? Get it? Because when the creature arose, it certainly was another feline, but the opposing one swam so well, they believed it had been a fish who'd decided to have a Fennel snack.

"Howdy." The cat called to them, with a wave of a paw. "Hello!" Fennel called back, waving. Their eyes were poised upon the stranger. "What're you doing here? I don't think you'd like it after awhile. Swimming is very tiring after awhile...I think I'm starting to lose steam myself.

The opposing feline chuckled. "What's your name?" The tabby blinked. "Fennel."

The fish-cat nodded. "Well, Fennel...welcome to your dream. You're on a lovely adventure indeed but it's up to you to end it. I'm just hear to watch as you go along, swimming. If you end up sinking I'll catch you...or try to. The mind is a strange thing you know."

Fennel's eyes widened. "Dream? It must've been that fish I ate..." Fennel huffed, shaking their head. The fish-cat shrugged. "Perhaps. Now are you going to keep swimming or wait until some other creature comes up to eat you? Mind that behind you, that fella looks pretty hungry."

"What?" Fennel turned. A monstrous beast loomed over the two, mouth agape as it peered down at those below. "Uh, you said this is a dream right?" The fish-cat clicked his tongue. "Is it?"

"What do you mean?! I'm about to get swallowed up by a monstrous beast of a fish, is this real or not?!" The fish-cat sighed. "It's your story. Why don't you live awhile longer and figure it out that way, hm?" A scream came from Fennel. "NOOOOOO- I WILL NOT BE EATEN BY A GIANT MONSTROUS FISH CREATURE!!!!"

      "Hey, hey keep it down!"

And then, the beast fell upon him, leaving only darkness around Fennel and the mysterious fish-cat. Was it only a dream? Or reality? Whatever the case, it had to be the fish.

a lyrical song of false words sung by a serpent, a thousand lies that i can never make 'right. truths that
i had always had a choice to let dance on my lips, but never came.

it’s who i am.
a liar.
a cheat.
a thief of broken hearts.

i am a monster.
one with enough charm to sweep angels off their toes.. a monster with a heart of stone bejewelled with counterfeit beauty. with
the most beautiful gemstones that crumble once they realize who i am.

what i’ve done to them.
after all, i am a breaker of hearts… but no one sees that.

“oh, fennel.. you’re so brave.”
am i? am i?

or is it just a mask that i wear? or is it that dazzling smile that speaks only lies, lies about everything being alright… when it' won’t.
it’ll never be, not while i’m still here.

wrecking eternal havoc upon the earth.

but here i am.
smiles and all. lips adorned with lovely words that are far from the simple truth, with a brave face that isn’t all that brave. eyes
'bright with enthusiasm, while my heart is sinking in my chest.
a cursed ship falling into eternal darkness.

so i’ll leave with the morning.
gone for hours and hours, wandering across the earth… searching. seeking, and… well- finding. new faces greeting me wherever i
go, and i’ll recite the same chorous over and over again. a song laced with little pleas for anything i can find. prey. herbs.
anything.

and they help me.
they always do.

so i arrive home.. home to my clan. show them everything that i ‘caught’... everything i found.
and.. they’ll woo over me. praise me. eyes wide as they crowd around at all the ‘goodies’ i lugged home. they don’t even
know the truth of how these 'goodies' find their way here in the first place.

the truth is they think i am their little angel. skilled with the gifts that the stars have blessed me with.
well… it’s nothing like that.

rather than catching… i’m collecting.
rather than searching… i’m waiting, paws outstretched for strangers to drop herbs into my arms.
and it works… i’ll ask and recieve. beg and gifts will fall at my feet. it’s an easy exchange, my little trinkets for the things that
their lives revolve around.

it all works... for now at least.

    Prompt:

fennel is highly well known to their clanmates and to outsiders alike. they always seem to do anything that puts them in the spotlight for the forest that their clan calls home. their reputation spreads far and wide regardless of who is telling it to whoever is listening. now you are listening to fennel’s tale of their widespread reputation from me, let me tell you why this cat named fennel is such a popular cat to their clanmates and even outsiders.

to start off with, fennel is a very friendly cat but perhaps way too friendly for their own good out in the wild. it has gotten to the point where fennel was getting reprimanded by their overbearing and yet too caring leader for their behavoir towards everyone. they will rather speak than fight a loner who was actively trespassing and hunting on the territory, or this one time fennel even tried to speak to a fox cub in a very improved "fox" in order to convince it to make its parents leave the clan's territory if fennel would dig a new burrow for the den (yeah, that did not end too well for the cat at all, the fox didn't like the idea or just what fennel was trying to say.) the foxes did end up moving but only after the leader of fennel had the foxes chased out when the cubs were grown enough and fennel got a stern talking too. yeah, this even extends into battles. their friendliness is ever growing as they will even go as far as apologizing in a battle to an enemy if they strike them too hard or even giving out pointers. this drives the leader insane over it and no one can stop them at all.

fennel is just frankly too friendly and without any constraint on their friendly nature to pretty much everyone and everything in the territory, fennel has built up a level of friendship with everyone. a loner on the territory, a new friend is made then ad there, or a kittypet came too close to the border, another new friend is made there and then as well. the list has gone on and on and by the end of it, fennel has learned everything about the cat without giving up too much on themself. the clan that fennel resides in has been known to make bets on fresh kill to see if fennel would recognize or make a new friend or two on a single patrol to some border or wandering in the forest. it happens every single time with fennel stopping to chat with some random cat near the border or even inviting a cat who roams the woods to hunt with the patrol. fennel knows everyone and everything that comes into that forest or goes through it. you can't ever escape fennel nor can fennel escape you. that is due to their widely talked about status.

no matter how many friends fennel will make and conquer, they will always have some toxic friends who wish to do what they want via fennel on clan territory. loners are known to purposely run into fennel just to get away with hunting in the clan's territory. the leader of the clan fennel resides in is absolutely mad at this yet can not do much as fennel would never purposely hurt their loner friends even if they take advantage of fennel themself. sometimes they will even run to fennel in a battle to get fennel to stop it, and most times that happens as fennel just stops the battle right away. they will, in turn, escort them to the border and scold them for not watching out for themself as their clanmates aren't as forgiving as fennel is or willing to let them trespass. (but, in reality, the clanmates of fennel just do as their leader says, unlike fennel who does not listen as much or as well as them as they are tired of fennel letting in loners to hunt in the clan territory.) however, that is not the only reason fennel is sought out by loners and rouges.

loners and rouges know of fennels super awesome and amazing battle skills and tips. they will go and seek out fennel at the borders to battle them and most times fennel is happy to oblige, much to the horror and concern of their clanmates who witness all of these battles. the cats are almost always defeated in a quick few blows with apologies by the amazing battle fennel who always helps them out after the battle. cats try to best them but never can due to the level of training fennel got from both of their parents a loner and a clanborn cat. this duo of moves makes them one of the best fighters in their clan, and they always are willing to train those who need it or want to train more via fennel's lessons. no matter what happens, fennel always gives them tips to improve their fighting skills and offers to train them but always forgets to somehow (their leader does not let them train the rouges and loners as promised, it is a solemn vow that the leader forced fennel to take.) but, in the end, they end up sent off with a piece of freshkill and a new friend in fennel who knows everything about them and can beat them in any fight.

outside of being known for their very awesome battle moves and friendly nature to outsiders, fennel is highly popular in their clan. they are known as the clan’s known gossiper of the forest’s latest drama. Normally they will never go after anything bad about their Clanmates, but they are willing to talk about those outside her clan. fennel will talk for hours about what this cat did or what that cat did matter who they are as long as they are an outsider to befriend it yet. But, for in clan gossip, they only focus on the positive. they find no need to badly talk about their clan mates like that. their friendly nature makes some very close to all the clanmates so they will feel absolutely terrible if they talk about them behind their back, and they will tell often tell those clanmates if that will happen to them. They know that their clanmates will be greatly upset so they always try to comfort them if gossip goes around about them. So, the clan has named fennel with the nickname of “the comforter.” As they will always try their best to comfort anyone in the clan. that’s what they believe friends are for, and as stated previously they befriended everyone in their clan just as they intended.

this has made them highly respected within their clan. their clan mates often look up to them for help, and fennel is always willing to help. fennel will always lend a shoulder when needed or even go out of their way to make the clanmates feel happy you. that’s just what they like to do, they enjoy being able to help their clanmates when needed. They often become very proud of the best quality out there. it makes them happy to know they are able to help with them in the clan much like they’re able to help outside of it. they always pride themself in this regardless of what they do to help out.

now you see why fennel is like this, their widespread reputation speaks for itself. but also fennel’s actions do just as much, fennel overall is a very friendly cat who will do anything for anyone, but they are also feared for their battle skills that outranks and outclasses anyone who challenges them. they have friends in all sizes and sparring partners always, and they always love to help their clan as needed. fennel is a well known cat who knows everyone and will come to learn everyone and everything about them. fennel will eventually befriend you too and know close to everything about you too, so watch out for them at their clan territory and borders of this known territory. spread the word of fennel so their story can travel as far and as wide as you may carry it.

Fennel smiled joyfully. They were determined to make today a great day! With what ever it took! That was their goal for the day! Their amber eyes sparkled against the sunlight. That was all they wanted for today! It was a simple goal and it seemed almost to simple to any other cat but themself. "Thats ok! Having a good day isn't easy for some cats as it is others! Don't let them get you down Fennel!" They chirped to them self smiling. It was gonna be a swell day! Fennel had been trying to meet this goal for so long but it didn't matter to them anymore! This was the day! They knew it!

Fennel smiled to their self, they felt proud of their looks today. They knew their looks never changed but today They appreciated how they looked and that was a great start to the day! Simple but a great start no matter what any other cat had to say! Fennel smiled at
their self, determined. "You got this! Lets start in the flower field! Thats a great start to any day! And you love doing stuff with flowers!" Fennel told their self. They started padding off in the grass filled land to find their favorite flower patch. They knew it had to be somewhere around here!

Fennel smiled once they finally found the patch of flowers. "Great! Here we are!" Fennel chirped to their self happily.

Everything about the day had been a warning sign.

When the sun rose in the morning, it had been barely visible behind a thick shroud of mist. Rays caught on the remaining leaves in the trees, sending dapples and ripples out onto the forest floor. And while there was no wind, there was still a slight breeze, sending the occasional drift of leaf litter across the earth. It might have been a nice quiet day, perhaps - had it not been for the strange darkness that the clouds and the mist had caused, and the spattering of rain that had begun to fall from the sky. And it was cold - so, very cold.

Fennel shifted inside their little den, quickly drawing their tufted tail over their nose as they breathed in the harsh, frosty air. Since when had autumn been so cold? Huffing, they wanted nothing more than to stay curled up in a tiny ball in their comfortable moss nest - but alas, their stomach was rumbling, and they needed to catch something warm to eat. They almost laughed - there was no way they were going to be able to catch something in this weather. Everything would be hiding in its burrow like they wanted to do, drowsing the day away and waiting for the sun's warmth to return. Stretching out, they unsheathed their claws and hooked them into the damp earth, lashing their tail from side to side. If nothing else they would go out and try to find something - if all else failed, they could always try and find that old loner's den on the edge of the forest and see if they had something to eat.

Their pawsteps were quick and quiet on the forest floor, trying not to disturb the many fallen leaves that would crackle and crunch under their feet. That was one thing the rain was good for - it soaked hastily into the leaves, turning them into something akin to mush. It was much quieter underfoot, albeit damp and squishy as well. Sniffing for any prey scents, Fennel turned their head towards the short, squatty copse of trees that dropped red berries. This late in the season the little fruits were turning to mush as well - but perhaps something would want to make a meal of the ones that remained? They pondered for a moment, trying to catch a scent, but the fog seemed to have made everything still and stale. They puffed out a breath, watching it turn into a frosty cloud. It was worth a shot.
