Enigma lived in a small house by herself. It looked normal on the outside, herbs planted in pots, and more hanging from the porch. Inside, it was normal too. A kitchen scented with lavender and rosemary, a living room with a large couch and several books, and a bedroom with small plants. Enigma had some friends, and she insisted they call her Emmi. Aside from Enigma’s obvious gardening hobby, she did something else. Enigma collected spirits.
It isn’t as bad as it sounds. Spirits are the echo of someone who has passed on, but the essence of them hasn’t left. Enigma helps ones who want to move on, move on, and she takes care of the ones she doesn't. Some, don’t have good intentions. They didn’t come from a kalon or animal, and don’t want to pass on until their objective is done. You need lots of room to store these spirits, so Enigma keeps them in her basement. If you go down the stairs, through a trapdoor, and down a ladder, you come into a room. Some cages hung from the walls and ceiling, and charms and runes were on the walls. Some dark spirits were trapped in the cages and in holes in the wall. They were surrounded by lavender and several runes to prevent them from getting out. Some rattled the bars, and some hissed as Emmi went by. She ignored them, and headed for the one spirit she wanted. Her pet cardinal. She had found the spirit by the large oak tree down the street, and immediately gave it some lavender from her small bag. It had hopped on her shoulder, and when she got to her vault, she prepared a cage for him. It had a perch, and runes to protect him from anything. She set in some lavender, and it was now two years later, and the cardinal still hadn’t left. He was Emmi’s best friend, besides her gardening group of alive kalons. She had had one kalon spirit in her lifetime of collection though. It was someone she found wandering the streets. She brought it to her spirit vault, and set a couch and some books in there. After a few days, Enigma helped the spirit move on. It was a weird process. You needed to find what the spirit didn’t want to leave, give it to the spirit along with a single rose, and something would happen. This one faded out, but most dissolved. Emmi had observations and records written in journals, and they lined the bookshelves. Enigma touches the faded letter at the very top.
“If you are reading this letter, it is not chance, but destiny that you are here. With these glasses, you will see the spirits. Take care of them, the glasses and the spirits.”
Enigma smiled.
