Name: Wysteria
Gender: Mare
Wysteria is a mostly quiet, gentle, and fiercely loyal mare. She struggles to share her feelings and doesn't like to make anyone feel bad, to the point where she might not even say if they hurt her feelings even inadvertently for fear that sharing her own feelings would hurt them.
Because of this she can be selfless to an almost dangerous degree.
But she is certainly a mare worth having in your corner, she will fight for you to the end if you ask it of her. Wysteria is never fiercer or stronger than when she is defending her herd or those she loves.
Wysteria was a very small foal when she and her mother joined a large herd in the north. Their own herd had been infected with illness, so Wysteria’s mother had fled before her young foal fell ill. It was luck that their new herd seemed happy to accept the homeless pair.
Wysteria grew up never doubting she was safe with so many older horses there to protect her, and plenty of foals to play with. Over time she grew especially close to Nox, one of the few colts who had been born that year.
She always knew there was something special about him, but never quite understood what it was. She heard the adults say as much, whispering about it when they thought young ears weren’t listening. But to Wysteria what made Nox special was his kindness to her, and how he was always patient with her even when other foals weren’t. Despite being perfectly healthy Wysteria was unusually small as a foal so struggled sometimes to keep up with other foals her own age.
As she got older that changed and she grew into her hooves, so to speak, but Nox remained her fast friend and in time she came to care for him as more than that. She imagined they might run off together, perhaps have a future just the two of them. She held onto that dream, until everything happened and he was made to leave. She never quite knew how it all came about, only that the herd had begun to whisper again and then one morning she woke up and he was gone. No one would tell her where, or why, so after days of getting no answers to her questions Wysteria went out in search of her friend.
She searched for a long time, but he seemed to have vanished without a trace. Along her journey she encountered many dangers, and she came to really understand just how dangerous the world was for a young lone mare with no herd to protect her. At one point she was caught by humans and for a time kept by them and forgotten in a small barn. During that time she yearned to see the daylight again, to run free once more.
When she finally did escape, she was weak and tired. It took her time to build up her strength and with the scent of humans so fresh on her coat no herd she came across would take her. In fact, she was shunned, accused of trickery and betrayal to her own kind.
After months of wandering alone, being chased out of various herds territories, she finally came across a place where she thought she could rest and heal. Imagine her surprise when she found that there was a small herd already living there, and Nox was the herd’s stallion.
Wysteria was overjoyed that fate had allowed her to find him once more and for those first few days it was heavenly, getting to rest and regain her strength, and get to know her friend once more. He had looked for her, not long after he had left the herd. But of course he hadn’t found her and the herd had told him they feared she died. Wysteria was pleased to find that he had missed her as she had missed him, and that he had even come back for her.
But her joy quickly faded as she realized that he had changed in his time away. It wasn’t bad exactly, he had become a more serious, mature version of himself. A true leader. But he had also found other horses, other mares to share his life with, and Wysteria realized that while she was still his dear friend, he had not yearned for her the same way she had for him. He would let her stay as long as she wished, and maybe in time he would care for her differently, but there would always be someone else. It would never be just Nox and Wysteria, like she had always dreamed and hoped. It was just how life worked, she knew. But that knowledge made it hurt no less.
Not wanting to be stuck in a strange herd and having no idea where to find her old herd, Wysteria did stay on and has supported Nox as his most loyal friend. But the struggle was never completely gone, the pain she felt at having to share him and seeing that what she had hoped they would have was something he had found with someone else. So while she finds other ways to be fulfilled and content a small part of her never quite feels complete, a small part of her heart might always break for what might have been.
