She was made of sweet honey and rich cocoa.
Malini’s father, Kenzo, was her absolute favorite person in the world. Every time she was sad or scared, which she often was as a child, he would lick her closed eyes and care for her hair, teaching her the importance of taking care of herself. She cared for her hair religiously, if only to also soothe her insecurities about her appearance - dull browns and common beiges, in her eyes. Yet as soon as she was old enough to meet herself, her mother and father said she was made of sweet honey and rich cocoa. Eventually, she believed it.

That’s what she called it.
It trickled naturally from her paws and eyes, the honey from which she was made. And as she grew, she found that her honey could be turned into ornamental gold. She began to make these beautiful metallic jewellry and tattoos that adorn her body. Yet it was a secret she was happy to keep to herself, and she was content with only becoming perfect at her craft, giving it away to herself and her family. They were the most important thing to her, and her weaving of gold threads and laughter kept them together.
However, fate was not kind to her, and one day, her family shattered.

Her honeygold threads were never unbreakable. That day, she cried tears of honey that turned into gold under her left eye.

Now, she only had the last maxim left, and in the flurry of her own mind and life, she knew only one thing: she had to find a way to survive, no matter what.
She ran from one cruel world to the other one, in the city. There, she learned that cities were made for those who caught your attention, and so, she used her honeygold to craft herself a look that would turn any head. Even …
Ah. Even the ones whose attention she didn’t want.
At times, she did unspeakable things to survive. Each of those times, she turned her left side away, closed her eyes, and cried so much that the honeygold glued her eyelids together on her right eye, for them to never open again.

Now, Malini uses her looks and honeygold artistry in the art and theatre scene, with a group of carefully chosen family. She did it. Every day, she looks at two post it notes in her home. One of them says this - you did it - an homage to the strength she showed and gained from doing what she needed to do, and that she did it, she survived; and the second one - she was made from sweet honey and rich cocoa. A reminder to never forget what she was made of.
One day, she wondered if honey or honeygold was even real - that perhaps she only convinced herself that it was true, because she had a need for something beautiful in her life. Maybe it was true, maybe not, but she actually found that in the end, she didn’t care for the answer. It was real to her, and to her survival as an artist and as a person. Honeygold would always be hers.

September 15th 2021
Cleo woke me up inhumanly early today. I took a chronotype test online the other day that told me that my ideal waking up time is 7:30 am which sounds perfect, yet there I was, at 5 am, on a morning jog I regret saying yes to. We quickly decided that our plans of doing 5 am jogs every day would not work out when we were sprawled on our backs in the park, panting like our lungs were depleting. At least now I know I’m fine just making jewellry and doing the occasional walk. Sunrise was pretty though. And we got to go by the bakery right as it opened, which meant - FRESH BAGELS.
One of my customers left a bad review today. Carter apparently didn’t like how his honeygold sculpture of his favorite fish had a “strange transluscence”. Well, Carter, it’s called HONEYgold. If you wanted something boring, get a sculpture of just pure and boring gold. He’s at least not getting his money back. And yes, I did imagine at least four arguments with him in the shower, all of which ended in my obvious victory.
I wish Mark would stop bugging me about getting an eyepatch. Yes, sure, man, they’re cool. Just … Not for me. Hopefully he’ll get it into that silly male head of his someday.
Otherwise I’m getting ready for the concert on Friday. It’s the anniversary of … something bad. Bad, but in the past. The concert will be good to drown it away even more. Wow, just writing about it was a downer. I’ll go blast some music now and create a honeygold butterfly to stick on the window. Been meaning to do that.
