Darkness and shadows drifted across her mind as she came to. Her eyes remained closed as her hearing faded in and birds' music danced through the air and touched her soul. She scrunched her closed eyes tighter. The ground was soggy... she could feel the mud glooping around her.
Oh.... oh no...
Slowly, fuzzy memories peeked in and out of her mind's eye, never staying long enough for her to focus on them and see what they truly were. But... she knew. Her chest wrenched in pain and her breath heaved.
Not again...
.
.
.
Please... Not again...
She could feel the sun on her face, see the red of it through her eyelids. How was it so sunny and hot? If her emotions were any judge, it should be stormy, dark, and bleak. The weather rarely cooperated with her though.
She could feel that she was laying in a very uncomfortable position -- and apparently on top of sticks and rocks as well -- but she was so stiff and sore that she was unsure if she could move. She finally opened her eyes, slowly, squinting in the brilliant sunlight. Once her eyes adjusted she could see that she was, indeed, laying in a massive glob of mud. She painfully raised her head and looked toward the west... toward home. Her heart sank at what she saw, but it was no more than she expected to see.
An incredible mudslide had left a massive scar down the face of the mountain... trees, boulders, earth... all around her and out of place. She squeezed her eyes shut again as a sob tore from her throat.
No...
She couldn't bear to look again. She couldn't open here eyes... and yet... if she didn't open them, the memories would just keep getting stronger and stronger. The faces would continue to materialize and the guilt would drown her. She let her eyes drift open. She stared, unseeing, at the mud all around her. Fewer than ten paces from where she lay in a tangled heap was an equally tangled heap of trees and mud. The once-proud trunks may have been able to withstand any amount of wind and rain, but they could not resist the incredible force of a landslide... Could not resist her.
She looked down at her legs and tried to see their individual positions so that she could begin to unwind them. She slipped a few times but eventually she was able to get to her feet. She looked at herself. Her coat was so thoroughly slathered in mud that no one could actually see what she looked like.
"Good," she said aloud, but then continued the thought in her mind. Maybe no one will recognize me... She ignored the fact that there was likely no one left who would recognize her. It was too painful a fact for her to look at it right then.
She slowly began to walk out of the are affected by the mudslide, her feet making awful sucking noises as she pulled them out. It took her longer than she thought it would to place her feet back onto green grass, but eventually she did find herself on level, clean, grassy ground. She didn't realize until then just how famished she was. She reached down and greedily grabbed mouthfuls of the rich, dark green plants.
She felt the eyes on her before she saw anyone. Her head came up and she looked around nervously, her ears swinging this way and that, trying to pinpoint where the Other was. She saw no one, but as clouds moved to hide the sun, she decided to move into the forest to better hide herself. At least the mud, twigs, and leaves covering her would keep her well-camouflaged. She peered out between branches of a felled tree, waiting to see who may show themselves.
Dark ears appeared at the crest of the hill as a horse walked over the grass toward the forest. He was a stallion, she sensed from his demeanor, and his coat gleamed in the sunlight, even hidden as it was behind clouds. He was... beautiful. She tossed her head slightly, annoyed with herself. She watched him approach the forest and stop at the edge, his hooves still on grass. He was like her, she could see. His mane dripped forlornly -- or so it seemed to her -- into his face as his sad eyes looked into the gloom of the forest's shadow.
His voice was smooth and deep as he spoke. "I did see you, you know, from the top of that far hill. Who are you, and why are you in my territory?" He did not sound unkind, but he didn't sound overly friendly either.
She stayed in the shadows, wary of this new horse. She was startled when he let out an almost harsh bark of laughter. "I guess I can see why you are here," he said, eyeing the mud. "And I suppose it does not matter who you are, either. Leave here, stranger, before bad things happen."
Rebellion swelled in her heart. Was he threatening her?? Her eyes narrowed as she stepped out of the shadows of the trees. "I am Ebb, and you are unwise to threaten an unknown stranger." He had no inkling of what she was capable of. No horse scared her as much as she scared herself. His eyes narrowed in return and he lowered his head, ears pinned.
"I--" Suddenly though, his words cut off and his head jerked back up. That voice... "Who... who did you say you were? I- I mean... where did you say you were from?" His voice shook and his words stammered.
She was taken aback by this sudden change of mood. "I am Ebb...?" She said, confused. "I live on the mountain... or, well... I did until..." Her voice trailed off as the stallion's expression became very intense as he stared at her. She was starting to feel intimidated, and she was never intimidated by anyone, stallion or not.
His eyes darted to the mudslide and back to her face. "What happened here, what caused this?" His words were fast and dilled into her.
She began to back away. "I-- I didn't mean to things just... happen sometimes, I--"
"You did this? You're sure?" The stallion advanced as she retreated.
"I-- yes? I don't... understand what you--" She bumped against a muddy, misplaced boulder.
"Where is your herd? How long have you been with them?" His questions came faster and faster.
"My herd is... gone," her voice broke. "I don't know... they found me a few years ago in a... similar situation. I... I don't seem to be able to control my... element..." her voice faded.
"Sizaan..." His voice choked as he said the name. Her heart thudded in her chest. Her mind reeled. She knew that name, but only vaguely. The stallion effortlessly pulled water from the mud around them, causing it to dry and crumble into dust. Crystal clear water floated through the air and gently washed away the mud from her coat. She was a beautiful red shade, now perfectly clean.
The stallion's eyes filled with tears. "Do you not remember me?"
The mare looked into his eyes, her mind reeling. She had lost her memory after the first mudslide she had accidentally caused four years previously. She vaguely remembered one word, Sizaan, but had no context for what it meant. A herd found her and took her in. She had grown to love them dearly, but she had never been able to fully control her element. Most of the time she was fine... but then.. This stallion seemed to know her, and she did know that name. Was that who she was? Was she Sizaan? She dropped her gaze while she thought these things, but then raised them to his again.
"I do not know you... yet, I feel as if I should. I know the name you spoke, but I have always thought that it was perhaps the name of a loved one. My herd named me Ebb, and I accepted it as I did not know my own name. But now, you say my name is Sizaan, and that you know me. Will... will you tell me how you know me?"
He could see that it would take her time to get to know him once again, but, if she was willing, he had all the time in the world.
