Range Trotters are the result of crossbreeding Orlov Trotters, Finnhorses, Welsh Cobs (section C & D) and Hanoverians. Later crosses of Quarter Horses, Paint and Appaloosas to gain color and to give a boost to their hardiness.With a height average of 13-15 hands, they're a hardy breed with characteristics for various disciplines.

Created for use as work, carriage and leisure riding horses originally, they now serve as long-distance range horses, such as work with Park Rangers and mounted officers.

Willing and eager personalities, most are quickly trained to be bombproof and therefore trusted mounts in all lines of work; some are being seen in local show jumping competitions, others are notably used in therapeutic sessions for their calm temperaments. Harness races and endurance trials are common for the breed, as they are able to sustain an extended trot without tire. Cross-Country competitions see some of the taller Trotters, but due to their cob lineage this is still uncommon.

Despite the variety of competitions and work these horses are being seen in, they are still famously skilled as endurance racers. Many competitors have chosen Range Trotters due to their tireless work ethic, as well as the ease in which they can be trained. Many have become champions in endurance trials, and they have quickly become a sought after breed for their natural ability.

Prompt: Thrash walked up to his mother, a palomino-painted mare, beautiful and graceful as she was... not the best horse to be raised by in Thrash's case. Thrash, despite his bruiser-like name, he's very kind and sweet but you know how that always turns out in the real world... there are always a few people who prefer to take advantage. Like his mother. Thrash learned that to please his mother... it was painfully simple. Never speak, never look, never show your "weakness" or love for her, no matter how much you want to tell her. Those were the three nevers of Thrash's moral code. His mother never wanted him in the first place, so that might be reason one. Possible reason two is the fact she didn't know how to express the fact she did actually love him. One of those coldhearted characters you can tend to sympathize with.

Besides the cold shoulders from his mother, he tends to get bullied by the other horses of his past home for his over-achiever and successful personality. He tends to be clumsy but no one ever sees his flaws and instead turns his good luck into bad luck, shaping his good personality into one he begins to believe is horrid and crude. Thrash couldn't take it one day and the next morning his mother and barn mates found he disapeared.

Prompt: "Won't I reach the lights?" The bright-eyed colt had asked, his gaze fixed on the shining stars outside the small, chipped window above the rickety stall he shared with his kin. Propped up on the perilously stacked hay bales, it seemed as if the only thing keeping him from the endless night sky was the thin layer of cobweb and glass. Sweet and fairly gentle both toward the creatures he comes across and the people who visit him, with a mischievous spark to boot. He's always a sight to see in and out of the stables, usually covered head to toe in muck and hay and the newspaper shreds that a herding dog had left behind, but always with a spring in his hooves and sureness in every stride.

Despite his mothers’ many attempts to nudge him along with the others he simply never left.

His favorite company was an old mare named Nona. Astrophel would find her grazing along the edge of the herd and lay down to listen to her tales. Nona wove stories to him of the outside world, off of the barn. She had been all over the place for cross country shows, something uncommon for many trotters. Day after day of listening to her stories Astrophel could only dream of a life beyond the fences. He wished to go and compete in front of a crowd, impressing all of them by doing the unexpected for his breed.

Even as he aged going to a yearling and then a nice young stallion his dreams followed. The passing of Nona only served as inspiration for him. He was going to keep her legacy alive and prove to her that he was still that dreamy colt.
