Prompt:Does anyone truly know what it means to love someone? Truthfully, yes. Its only a matter of finding such a person. Or for some...realizing it all together.
"Mommy! Help me, please! Don't let me go!" A high-pitched voice yelled at the shrinking form of a feline, rapidly disappearing into the distance. The tiny bundle of fur wailed, wriggling about as he attempted to free himself. The cat who held him by the scruff sighed, gripping the kit a bit more to ensure he didn't drop it.
"Please, quiet down...your mother...it'll be okay." The tom mumbled out after a moment, ears ringing from all the continuous wailing. He could only hope that they'd manage to return to camp, before they ran across any trouble.
XXXXThe tom finally managed to make it to camp, though the kit had somehow managed to cry the entire way back. Ferris carried him to one of the warden's, ears laid back in hopes the kit would stop soon, lest they disturb one of the mothers or even worse, their offspring.
Please, stop crying...just for a moment...XXXXFinally, they entered the den. One of the mothers was there, her offspring currently playing together off to one side. Ferris sighed through his nose, tail waving in greeting. Finally, the young kit seemed to calm down, at least for a moment. He quieted, scanning the area with wide eyes.
"Good evening, Lily." He greeted, carefully setting the tom upon the ground. The warden turned to face him, her eyes alighting with surprise.
"Oh hel- Ferris...Where did the kit come from? Surely, this isn't one of the escapees?" The molly asked, referring to the few that were surprisingly skilled at escaping from the wardens den.
"No no..." A look of sorrow briefly appeared on his face.
"He's...""Who? Who is he?" Lily questioned further, urging him onward with his speech. The tom gazed down at the kit, pulling him closer instinctively, only for the young tom to fight against him.
"He certainly can't be yours with that attitude!" The queen half-joked, now casting him a look of suspicion.
"No..." The tom said once more, giving her a weak smile.
"He's Azalea's..." He managed, grimacing a tad. Lily's eyes widened, something of a mix between apologetic and sorrowful appearing among her eyes.
"Ferris...no..."XXXX"M-Mommy? Where is she?" The tom spoke suddenly, overhearing his mother's name. He tried to escape once more from the tom's grasp, but Ferris held him tight.
"She's not here Frisk...she's not here..."The following days were....exhausting to say the least. With Frisk in the care of Lily, Ferris occasionally visited him whenever able, but Frisk would always push him away.
"Go away!" He'd cried, warily turning to Lily as he did so. The older tom would spare a glance with the warden, before leaving, though he'd always leave something behind for the young tom.
XXXX"Why don't you like Ferris?" The warden asked one evening, her gaze warm and welcoming. The young tom took a moment to think over whether he should reply or not, but merely said,
"I don't like him." And nothing more. The molly sighed before leaving him be.
XXXXThough, Frisk's story was only known to Ferris and Lily it would soon be known by more than the two. His fellow denmates had been watching him closely, whispering among one another about why he was always so angry and slept by himself, hardly interacting with anyone if he could help it. Finally, two of them approached the prickly tom.
"Hi!" One called out, while the other poked him.
"Go away!" He yelled at them, but the two merely backed a short distance away from him.
"Didn't I tell you? He's always so angry and for what?!" Frisk's frown deepened at the reply, his pelt prickling.
"No I'm not! Now leave me alone!" The other kits still only stood there, casting amused glances between each other.
"Why? You can't tell us what to do! And your mom isn't even around to help you!" Just then, Ferris arrived at the last words spoken - a horrible time no doubt.
Frisk's demeanor dropped in an instant, wide eyes drooping, alongside his ears and tail.
"Y-Yes she can! she'll be here! I know she will! Mommy!" He cried out. But alas...she did not appear. He continued, but the other kits merely laughed at him. Ferris then approached, standing between the two.
"Alright, enough. Leave him alone. And don't make jokes like that...those are painful beyond belief. Now go." He said to them. The kits glanced at one another before leaving, allowing Ferris to turn to Frisk.
"Frisk-"XXXXThe tom cut him off.
"No! You're not my mom! I don't want to talk to you!" He cried, backing away from the tom. Ferris sighed heavily, taking a step closer before hesitating. "
Okay, Frisk. But if you ever need to talk..."Time and time again, Ferris stood up and protected Frisk from various things, cats and otherwise. Even so, the young tom always ran away or yelled at him to leave in the end. Again and again the cycled played over and over. And after one time too many...Frisk had had enough.
XXXX"Stop it! Just stop it!" He cried one evening to the tom.
"I don't want your help! I don't want to talk to you! I just want Mommy back!" Ferris was silent for a moment, though the kit continued.
"If you want to help me so bad, take me back to her! If you won't then leave me-"XXXX"I can't." The tom replied at last. Frisk paused for a moment, green eyes wide.
"What do you mean you can't?! You took me from her! You didn't want me to be with her! You-" Ferris gave dropped, though he cut the tom off.
"You don't understand! Your mother...Azalea is dead. Your mother...is asleep, just like how we left her...but forever."The young tom had fled after Ferris's words, avoiding him at all costs. surely, he had to be lying. His mother, asleep forever? Never.
XXXXBut alas, it wasn't until the tom was alongside some of the hunters during training sometime later and one caught a jerboa. The young tom hadn't left its side since finding it, merely gazing at it with a worried expression.
"What's wrong, Frisk?" One of the hunters asked.
"The...jerboa...I think something's wrong." The feline gazed at him oddly, before shrugging.
"No, that's just what happens after you catch it. Its...dead now." And at that, Ferris's words came to him. And so did the emotions.
Ferris found the tom later that night, carefully approaching the young tom.
"If you want me to go...then tell me. But if you'd like any comfort..." The young tom didn't reply, allowing the older one to settle beside him. After a moment of silence, Ferris spoke.
"I know it hurts. It hurts me too...that's why I've been trying to help you. I can't bring Azeala back...but I can offer my love and support. You know I've done all those things because I love you, right?"XXXXFrisk was quiet for a moment.
"Mom didn't love me then...she left me." Ferris's eyes widened, heart breaking.
"No, no. You see...times like these are complicated. But I assure you, that she loved you. That's why she told me if anything ever happened to her...to take care of you for her." He pulled the young tom close.
"Did she really? Did you really...do those things because...you loved me...?" He asked after awhile.
"I'm sure of it. I'm here if you ever need me. Always."The two stayed together for some time that night. And for the first time, Frisk felt...safe. He was able to sleep next to another and no longer held anger toward the tom. There'd be a lot of healing in the future...but there'd be someone to help him along, even so.
