I mean- under that tough, black fur she's just as nice and sane as the rest of us. She just wants a life for herself. She just wants what I do. A purpose. And to be frank, I don't blame her. After the fire that killed Nightfall's best friend and my brother, I guess I understand. I should have saved them both. But no. I had to run away. I had to be a mousebrained wimp. I had to abandon my family and friends when they needed me most.

My colony would still be alive if it weren't for me.

Dear Journal,

Tonight was... terrible. Those cowardly Coyotes were in the park again, poor little Brindlekit can hardly sleep a wink with the yapping. I can't blame the little dear for being scared. I stayed up with them, trying to comfort them as best I can. They are too young to really understand me yet but I have faith they will learn just like all my kits. I'm due to have my litter soon, Blaze assures me. Sometimes I wonder if that funny little cat even finished their training? They seem to gossip far more than they do anything a Healer should do. I should try to get some rest now that the yapping as stopped and Brindlekit is snoozing at my side.

Some cats pray for luck, for good-grace and kind giving. Some cats pray for a full belly, while others pray selflessly for others. Most desire material possession, a warm nest, a forgiving season on this unforgiving earth. But not me.

I pray for companionship, because I am alone.

An old acquaintance of mine once said that life on this earth is a fickle thing. I don't think I ever truly understood what he meant, I still don't. And I doubt I ever will. My lack of remorse is what pushes people away. This inability to feel what others feel so passionately. It frustrates me, but those thoughts are fleeting and far between. I do not need to feel what others feel, although I desire it so strongly. When Emberstride left to follow ambition instead of me she left what little heart I had shattered in her wake. She had been my only companion for many, many moons. A loyal confidant, a trusting friend.. a compassionate lover. But I had seen the hunger in her eyes and I knew these moments of raw bliss would be fleeting.

She did not pray for companionship. She prayed for power.

But when the beckoning of a faraway clan pulled her from my grasp, her prayers had finally been answered. She left without a word, without a thought, without a care. I was nothing to her in the face of raw ambition. And with her went foolishly my heart, and I was alone again. Perhaps that is simply life, a fleeting moment and nothing more. I know I must move on, because she already has. Even-still, I wish I could have at least said goodbye.

Dear Diary;

These cats are all. So wonderfully, gloriously stupid.

You would think that, since they call themselves a 'Clan', they'd know what they were doing. You'd think that they would at least have five cats. Instead, I think that there's barely even three. Personally, I wouldn't even count the third cat as a member, considering he usually slinks around, being mysterious.

I ran into him in the middle of the desert at night and I swear to all the stars above, the sight of him almost scared me into my next life.

Their "leader," Coyotesun, has absolutely no idea what running a group is supposed to look like. Half the time he's just trying to keep the second member, Everstumble, from accidentally tripping on something and falling to their death. Coyotesun claims to be a "born desert cat," but I had to watch him walk into a cactus and pick needles out of his pelt for an hour and a half. They are all so incredibly incompetent and I have no clue how they survived this long. I wanted to just stop for a moon or two, recharge, then head on my merry way again, but I genuinely think that if I leave they'll manage to all die out just deer to sheer ineptitude. I might have to stay a bit longer just to teach them how to survive so that I won't feel incredible guilt when I come back to find their bones.
