A world beyond ours, though not necessarily too far. A spirit world that lives parallel to the one we inhabit. What kinds of spirits exist there? Zombies, Oni, folklore, urban legends, and more; do they exist beyond us? Are they real? Cirro wonders this, sitting beneath the clouds that wisp along like spirits, whispers in the wind that call out to them. If they do exist, there must be ways to find them, surely. They think about the different entrances to get there, a shrine or arch perhaps; maybe even just a doorway to an inconspicuous building in the city or the fields in the farmland could take us there.

Such a thrilling place may exist but is completely unknown to anyone. But at the same time, Cirro doesn’t want to bother the spirit world if it does exist because what kind of terrors may await if so. Surely not everyone would be kind to a stranger visiting their world uninvited. But that wonder consumes Cirro every time they lay out under the clouds and dream; “...maybe one day I can go visit.”

As much as Miette loves her work, time passes all too quickly. The clouds overhead sweep by faster than she can paint them, leaving her with only vague suggestions on the wood canvas. Once again, she resumes her work by attempting to paint the cranes idling nearby until—as if having felt the presence of her eyes—they shoot off in a flurry of feathers and disappointment. Miette sighs and sets down her paintbrush.
"Just five minutes," she mutters, rubbing her temples. "Five minutes in my own thoughts. Then I can focus."

Miette wanders over to her nearby recluse where tufts of young grass sprout up along the base of an old oak tree and nestles into the ground familiar with her shape. She closes her eyes, feeling the gentle wind play along her fur, until the world slips away.





In a blink, Miette is no longer abroad painting foreign wildlife, but is instead back at her college. The tall, stone buildings weathered by decades of precipitation and memories contrast against the backdrop of rolling hills and autumn trees. Despite the cold, students are joyfully milling around lovingly handcrafted festival booths. The familiar smell of the culinary club's freshly baked apple pie floats through the air as colorful banners hung up by the student council flutter through the breeze. The sun lies just over the horizon, casting the sky in a stunning array of pinks and oranges as the festival winds to a close. But for Miette, her night's journey has just begun.

At this hour, Miette would normally be curled up inside with a book and a warm cup of chamomile tea, but she has somehow been convinced by her more adventurous friends to make this journey. Pulling her cardigan a bit closer, she rushes around the back of the building as the last glimmers of light disappear from the sky.

Stumbling over pebbles hidden in the shaded grass, she makes her way up the field at the back of the school and towards her meeting place.
"Miette! You actually came!" The delighted calls of her friends ring as warm and clear as the day she first heard them.
"Well, you did say this only happens once a year... even I can't miss that," Miette replied dismissively, concealing her own anticipation.

She settles in beside her friends and quickly finds a warm cup of hot cocoa being pushed into her paws.
"As if you'd miss out on a chance to hang out with the coolest kalons on campus." her friend replies teasingly.
"Wait, shush, it's starting!" Following her friends' gaze upwards, Miette spots colorful streaks of light darting across the sky. Watching the shooting stars, she leans against the shoulder of her friend, perfectly content in the moment she'll replay in her memories for months.





Miette is roused from her daydream by a ladybug perched upon her nose. Twitching her nose and laughing gently, she rises to resume her work, still feeling the familiar warmth in her paws and chest.

Hurricane loves sweets and dreams of eating the clouds while she gazes up at them. Some look like marshmallows and other look like cotton candy. However, her favorite clouds are the ones shaped like cake! She celebrates every birthday with chocolate cake made fresh by her mom and it reminds her of at the warm and goodness she feels being with her family. It reminds her of the laughter and confetti in the air. It’s so intriguing to her that a simple cloud can remind her of everything sweet in the world 💞

Yuna walked up the hill, listening to the pleasant sound of birds singing as the trees swayed calmly.
She was a bit away from her home, but she didn't mind.
Some Kalons may dream of big houses or fancy vacations, but all Yuna wanted was to start her own bakery.

She sat down in a patch of lush grass, looking down at the town below her.
She eventually laid down, staring up at the clouds, making out shapes one by one, each reminding her of a type of pastry or dessert that would traditionally be served at a bakery.

Her eyelids grew heavy, and then they fluttered shut.
She found herself standing behind a counter, leading out to a massive diner-like seating area.

" Good morning, Yuna! " A worker said, walking past Yuna with a platter of treats.

Woah.. who was that, and how did I get here? Is this a.. cafe? She thought, analyzing her surroundings.
She was broken from her train of thought when another Kalon tapped her on the shoulder.

" Are you doin' alright, boss? You seem a bit out of it, " They said, a slightly concerned look on their face.

" What do you mean by Boss? " She asked.

" Well, I mean, you run this bakery, so I call ya boss, is that okay? " The kal questioned.

" Oh, no, it's fine, carry on! " Yuna replied, watching the other kalon walk away.
I suppose I should start working then since I run this bakery?

And off she went, working and answering the questions of curious staff and customers alike. By the end of the day, she was exhausted.

" Yuna? " She heard a voice ask.

She whipped around, but there was no one there.

" Yuna! "

Yuna was pulled from her daydream by her little brother, who was standing over her and repeating her name.

" Finally, you're up! Mom told me to come to get you for supper! " The green kalon said, walking off towards the house.

So, it was all a daydream?

It was a dry sort of heat; one that made your skin sticky with sweat, and parched your throat no matter how much you drank. She stumbled down the sloping hill, yellow grass cracking under her feet, until she finally made her way to the bottom. A backpack was slung over her shoulder, filled with supplies to keep her fed and hydrated throughout the day. There was no way she was making the hike back up before evening.

An effort to get here, yes, but it was too hot in town. People knew about this place, but hardly any were prepared to make the short journey. They would be at home with the windows thrown open, trying to feel any kind of breeze. Any kind of relief. Her relief came at the bottom of the slope in the form of a small patch of trees. Their leaves were brittle, but they still provided shade. Pebbles shifted beneath her feet as she made her way along the stream bed, long since dried up. Once at the trees she tossed down her backpack and all but threw herself on the ground. Even a few degrees cooler felt like a huge relief.

This would be how she spent the afternoon; laying here, unmoving in the scorching haze. It was too hot for even the insects to be out and about. If she turned her head to the side, she could see sunlight radiating above the ground. Above her, gaps in the trees showed her a blue, almost cloudless sky. Clouds. Taunting them. Floating by without a care for their woes, offering no rain or shelter from the sun. Her name, lovingly given, seemed ironic now.

She half closed her eyes, and let her imagination wander.

Far above, wisps of cloud begin to thicken. They draw together, forming large bundles, darkening and spreading across the sky. White, to gray, to dark. A breeze begins to pick up, rattling the dry grass and cooling her flushed cheeks. It changes, strengthening, until a wind whips through her hair and makes goosebumps ripple across her overly warm skin. The effect is immediate, like aloe on sunburn, like leaping into a pond. A rumble echoes in the distance; it's been so long since she'd last heard thunder, it takes a few seconds to recognize the sound. Lightning flashes across the iron sky with another crack of thunder, like a hammer striking steel in the forge.

The first drop falls, splashing on her forehead and dripping down her face. From there, the storm breaks.

It rains in earnest, pounding against the ground, drenching her to the bone, filling the stream until it runs like a river. And she dances in it, splashing in puddles, laughing with relief that the drought is finally over...

Her eyes opened, believing for a half a second that her daydream could come true. The clouds overhead had already passed over. With a hoarse sigh, she reached into her bag for a precious lukewarm sip.
