Ruby is known for knowing and befriending everyone. She has a personality that seems to fit anyone, no matter how they act. Is there a stuck-up kit from somewhere new? Ruby could be braiding her hair and making flower-crowns in little to no time. What about the shy kit, who just won’t talk to anyone other than his older sister? She can get him to ramble about his favorite music for just about hours. Ruby is known and loved by everyone, and she knows that. She knows that she’s loved, but at the same time, Ruby doubts that she has a real friend.

It could have happened months or years ago, when she realized that she couldn’t talk to someone about her own feelings. She was the one others came to; the one others spilled to about their feelings, their day, or any other small insignificant detail that they couldn’t talk about with anyone else. But, after time, Ruby realized that she didn’t have someone like that of her own. Someone to just - lean on when her days are tough and she feels beaten down.

Of course, she got over that little detail pretty fast; why bother worrying over that, when she’s got so many other friends that depend on her? So many others who needed her.

"I promise, I'll be back by nine tonight and no later. And I wont spend more than a month's allowance!"

The tweenaged girl waved a hasty goodbye to her adoptive mother before briskly setting a pace for downtown. She was lucky her parents trusted her so much. It was much easier just to walk to the mall then to drive there. It was New York after all. If her mom had to drive her there, she'd be lucky if she even got there by closing time! Not that closing time bothered her, she had absolutely no intentions of being back at nine. She'd be fine staying out just a little later. The rest of her friends were allowed out until ten. So why not her?

She squeezed through the dense crowd, the harsh tang of automotive exhaust hanging thickly in the air. It must've taken her at least an hour and thirty minutes just to walk a mile from her apartment. But finally, she was there.

Her and her friends browsed happily for many hours. She bought over a hundred dollars worth of things in Hot Topic and about thirty dollars worth in CDs at FYE. While it was about three months of her allowance, she still had the gift cards from her birthday that brought it down to just a dollar under her monthly allowance. At least she'd keep that promise.

Then came closing time. The group headed out to the local park three miles further from her apartment to just chat for a bit. But three hours later, the place went pitch black. Something must've knocked out the power. But what? And when they fished their pockets for a light source, not one of them had a flashlight. Two of them weren't allowed phones yet, and the other three didn't feel it necessary to bring them. She was in the latter camp. They were out of the snacks and water they'd brought too.

"I'm scared," one of them whimpered.

She agreed. With how long they'd chattered, they weren't entirely sure which way was the way back home. Brooklyn's heart fluttered frantically in her chest, but she forced herself to speak. "Follow me, I think I can lead us back."

She didn't know for sure, just went off of her own intuition. A very faint light came from the distance in one direction, and any light was better than no light at all. So she forced her shaky unsure paws in that direction. She couldn't stop shaking. Normally, she'd call mom and she'd be picked up from wherever she was. Oh why did she have to stay out so late? If she'd just gone home when she said she would, the power outage would've happened well after she'd gone to sleep.

As the light grew stronger, dread settled deep into her stomach, which now roiled with each step she took. This was no ordinary light. Thick smoke filled the air, even from here they could all smell it. But now that she could see a bit more light, she could see which street they were on. Her gut feeling was right ; this was the way to one of their houses. Her own. She feared the worst. Her friends protested and tried to hang back but there was no use. They wouldn't change her actions. She needed to know if her family was alright. Adopted she might be, but family was more than blood. They needed to be alright. They just had to be. Begrudging and thoroughly terrified, her friends followed behind.

Was she running for two miles, or more? She had no clue, but now that she was closer, she could relax a little. It wasn't her house, thank goodness. It was whichever poor sap had rammed his Ferrari into a light post. At least, that's what she thought the car was. It was very badly damaged, so much so she could hardly tell what it was. Especially without risking her lungs to the smoke. She sighed in relief. To her gratitude, one of her friend's moms had been searching the whole town for her daughter and offered to take the rest of them home. She hugged them but didn't enter the car. After all, her house was only a couple blocks away. Suddenly, a harsh voice cut through the heavy air from across the street.

"BROOKLYN MAE SANDERS!"

Her stomach leapt up to where her heart should be. Her mom might be as relieved as her, but she sure was angry as well.
