name: Delta
what is their favorite animal and why?: Delta has always love all marine life. Choosing her favorite was a hard task. Was it the graceful dolphins performing their gravity defying leaps? Perhaps is was one of the vast array of fish that make their home on the coral reefs. Of course, it could also be one of the many species of squid or octopus. Always such shy little creatures that reminded her of herself. Whales have always been impressive, beautiful, and talented. Their songs always sounding so terribly sad that they made Delta's heart ache. Sharks have always fascinated her, but they also terrified her. The manta rays and sting rays are always really cute, and their skin albeit slimy is always so soft to the touch. No. While she loved all of these wonderful species, her favorite would have to be the Sea Turtles. The memories of watching the baby sea turtles hatch every year warm her heart. It was her mother's favorite time of the year. They would watch the sea turtles every year together. When Delta was really youngvshe didn't understand the fascination and adoration her mother had for them, she found it boring to sit and watch sea turtles make their way back to the sea. As she got older she started to understand a little more, and continued to go with her mother to see her smile. That was until her mother fell ill. Once her mother fell ill neither of them watched the sea turtles. The window from the hospital bed over looked the beach, but it wasn't the normal nesting area of the sea turtles. Several years passed like this, and Delta's mother grew weaker each year. The day she truly came to love sea turtles is burned in her memory and on her heart for the rest of time.
Delta was visiting her mother at the hospital one day. Her mother was very weak in the bed.
"Delta," her mother called, "my darling. You must promise me that you will be strong when I'm gone."
"Mother not this again please?" Delta whispered as a tear slid down her cheek.
"Fear not my child. I may be gone from this place, but I'll always be watching you from above. I'll remain in here," she pointed to Delta's chest, "always. I will live on through you." A weak smile graced her tired, sunken face. "Do you know why I love the sea turtles?"
Delta shook her head.
"It is be cause they never give up their fight of returning home. While not all of them succeed, and some don't live very long after making it back to the ocean, they never gave up. They continue to fight their way back. They overcome the most difficult of struggles, just to be free and home. I have always found it very inspiring, and tried to live the same way. I never gave up. Fughting to the very end to be free, and follow my dreams."
Delta nodded slowly, still uncertain, but more in love with the sea turtles than ever before. They talked for some time before her mom fell asleep. Delta watched as her mother slept, looking peaceful and pain free. It hurt knowing that her mother was constantly in pain. The thought of her mother not being there was painful. Soon she too dozed off. It must have been the middle of the night when she was awakened by loud noises and panicked voices. She opened her eyes groggily just as a nurse stepped over to her.
"Miss, we need you to leave. This is an emergency."
Delta's eyes shot up to her mother as the words sunk in. The loud noises were coming from the heart monitor. This can't be happening. Not this soon. Delta was too young for her mother to leave! Her own panic set in, and she tried to fight the nurse to be near her mother. Eventually she was removed from her mother's room. Sitting in the waiting room was agony. What was going on? Was her mother okay? Millions of questions flooded her head, but she had no one to look to for answers at this time. Half an hour passed, when the doctor approached her. Delta searched his face for any clues as to how her mother was doing. He knelt down and dropped his head.
"I'm so sorry. We did everything we could."
Delta's vision blurred as the tears built up, his words sinking in. When they finally registered she broke down into a sob. Her chest was tight, and she felt as though she couldn't breathe. She got to say goodbye to her mother one last time before she went home. The following morning, Delta walked the beach trying to clear her mind. She stood outside the hospital, down on the beach and looked up to her mother's old window. Her heart felt extra heavy. The sounds of flocking seagulls sounded behind her. It was strange as there wasn't much life on this part of the beach. She turned around to see why they were being so noisy. That's when she saw them. A whole nest of baby sea turtles, hatching and making their way to the ocean. On the beach outside of the hospital. Delta let out a heavy, halfhearted laugh.
"Thank you Mom. Now I know you're safe and watching over me. I'll be strong like the sea turtles. Strong," she paused as a smile lit up her face and a tears rolled down her cheek dropping to the sand, "like you." She too off toward the baby turtles, scaring off all the seagulls as they landed. Helping the babies that got flipped over. Protecting them from the glaring sun. She helped them fight their way back home. This was the day she TRULY came to love sea turtles.
