Sam had always been nervous about things for no reason. He gets fired up easily which leads to him being nervous. Once, one of Amber Hollow's riders, specifically Sam's owner, took him to a hunter jumper horse show. When she arrived to pick him up from Amber Hollow early in the morning, Sam already knew he was going to a horse show which caused him to begin to shake. His owner soothed him and attempted to distract him, stroking his neck helped although veins were popping from his soaked coat. She loaded him fine after a few refusals to load because he was under so much stress already. A couple of peppermints managed to do the trick. After he was fully loaded with all of his tack and gear, they were off towards the show grounds.
When they reached the horse show grounds, his owner parked at the stall he would stay in and unload him. She grazed him a little before tying him while she set up his stall. When she was finished, she led him inside, pulled off him halter, and shut the stall door. Samson was trying his best to stay calm. He was more calm now than before because he was tired. Sam laid next to his hay in a pile of fresh and clean shavings, slowly drifting off into sleep...
He woke up with a jolt. Cold sweat dried onto his shiny coat. A small amount of light shone into his stall. He saw his owner open the door and walk in with a pan full of grain mixed with soaked beet pulp. Sam got up immediately and began to eat. When he was finished, his owner groomed him, tacked him up, and took him to the warm up ring. He was nervous because of the huge crowd, but he did notice that his owner was trying her hardest to keep him calm and there were plenty of calm horses in the arena. Samson calmed himself through the warm up and walked back to his temporary stall with his owner. When they were back, he was untacked and put back into his stall until the afternoon.
The time came. His class started in just over an hour. Samson saw the door open yet again and he was tied and being groomed. He was tacked in his best show tack with a clean white hunter pad. His hooves were coated in glossy hoof dressing. Samson's mane was button braided, his tail was braided as well. He and his rider were set to show. They looked their best. The two walked down to the arena and began to warm up again. Samson felt his stomach twist with anxiety again, but he pushed it down. His turn came faster than it went. He was nudged into the arena. His heart was beating in his head as he trotted a circle. Samson broke into a canter towards the first jump as he braced himself. He heard his owner whisper between gasps of air,"One, two, one, two...", as she counted his strides. This also calmed Samson. Before he even started to jump, he beautifully cleared the oxer. His hope was restored and he continued the course, finishing second place out of seven other green hunter jumpers. So, I guess horse shows are not so different from riding at home then, Samson?
