prompt: Back before Tristan moved to Solaris, he lived on his family's farm. The farm has been in the family for generations, and Tristan always enjoyed life on the farm. His parents, uncle, three brothers, and one sister all grew up there together. It holds many pleasant memories for him. When he was seventeen, however, something extremely strange happened on the farm that he's never been able to get out of his head.
It was around five in the morning, the usual time that Tristan rose to get started on his daily routine. He was on his way to milk the cows and stopped short in his tracks. In order to get to the barn, you have to walk past the corn fields. Tristan nearly dropped the bucket he was holding at what he saw. Straight into the corn field was a path of bent, trampled corn stalks. What on earth could have done this? Tristan walked to the edge of the corn field and peered down the path as far as he could before it curved out of his view.
Horrified, Tristan backed away, dropped the bucket, and sprinted back towards the house. "Pop! Pop, come n' see this!"
Back at the edge of the cornfield, Tristan, his father, and his eldest brother, Ulysses, stood. His pop's brow was furrowed, deep in thought. Ulysses stood stiff with his arms crossed, frowning at the mess. No one spoke for a few minutes until finally, Tristan couldn't wait any longer. "What coulda done this, pop?"
The man only shook his head. "Dunno. I just dunno. But that's a lotta wasted corn." He scooped up one of the stalks on the ground and shook his head in dismay. "Such a shame." He looked down the strange path. "I s'pose the only way to find out is ta go down there." Everyone nodded in agreement.
So through the winding path they went. It was far longer than the three of them anticipated. Every now and then, another path would intersect with theirs, heading into the center of the field. They wandered until the sun came up, when they finally reached the center. A large clearing had been made in the middle of the cornfield. Tristan's jaw was agape. "This is one of them crop circles!"
Ulysses rolled his eyes. "Naw, don't be stupid." But he looked unsure.
"What else coulda done this?" Tristan insisted. "Unless one of ya came out here in the middle of the night and made intricate patterns in our field, I don't think there's any other explanation."
Pop shook his head. "Don't get carried away, now." He glanced around the circle. "There's nothin' here. It coulda been lightning or somethin'."
But the ideas of crop circles and aliens had already taken root in Tristan's mind. "Its aliens, pop! It has ta be!" Tristan ran to the center of the circle, spotting something jutting out of the ground. "Come 'ere! Look at this!" They walked over, looking doubtful, but curious. The three crouched around the object.
"What is it?" Ulysses pondered aloud.
Instead of answering, Tristan grabbed the object and yanked. The surface was slippery, and it remained in place. It was a dark, oily purple color. "Boys," Pop began in a wary tone, "Don't tell your Mama about this, ya hear?" The brothers nodded. "Don't tell anyone. This stays between us three. Now let's go get some shovels and dig this out."
It took the whole day for the small team to dig out the strange object. Around suppertime, it was finally uncovered. The strange-colored rock was huge, and had craters and holes in it. It almost seemed to...
glow. As if reading each other's minds, all three men muttered "aliens" before looking up at each other, startled.
They eventually decided it would be best to leave it for the evening. The next day, some strange men with badges showed up at their door. They brought a crew in, took the rock, and left. To this day, the three are positive that rock was from outer space. They never told anyone. Tristan is now an avid believer of aliens, and always looks for more strange happenings.
