Prompt: It's dark outside, the heavy clouds blocking what little moonlight there could've been. Bats scurry from one branch to another, the nighttime creatures emerging from their dens to begin the midnight hunt. All is quiet, all is still. The night is peaceful... For now at least. One kalon lies alone, eerily still, an empty shell of what once was a kind, playful, genuine kalon with a heart of gold. Now, he's empty. Nothing is left to tie his soul to the mortal world, and he's stuck in limbo, waiting for his destiny to be determined.
It's hard to say what happened. His body is covered in cuts and bruises, and the area surrounding him is nothing short of a battlefield. He fought hard... But against what? Why is he so broken? Who brought down such a fighter?
These questions will answer themselves soon enough.
It's not long before a bright light disrupts the gloomy perfection of the deep night, and a bright, winged kalon emerges. Her wings are neatly folded at her sides, her golden halo glowing brightly to match the rift from which she appeared. Her long legs hold a thin, regal body, and every creature nearby shrinks away, sensing her importance. The lone kalon lies still, his lifeless body barely grasping his now visible soul, fighting to escape. This new kalon speaks softly, but firmly.
"Be still. The life you once knew has come to an end, but have no fear. This is only the beginning of something far greater, dear Abaddon."
The wild soul slows his panicked movements until he comes to a halt. He locks eyes with this angelic beauty before him, but no words escape.
"I am
Seraphina, the eldest of the angels. I'm here to rescue you, and deliver you to your new life." She says simply. The young soul's eyes remain blank and confused, and she sighs. "You'd like to know what happened." She states, rather than asks. He nods eagerly. She lets out another long sigh. "I suppose you deserve to know." She sits down slowly, delicately, and motions to the disastrous landscape around them.
"This was no beast, creature, or demon that brought you to your end. This was the Earth itself." She begins the story with a solemn grimace on her face. "Nobody wanted you dead, except for Mother Nature. We all knew this day would come, that she would find you and you would meet your demise. We just didn't know it would be so soon." She pauses to gather her thoughts.
"Anyways. This all began about... Oh, maybe a day ago. You were alone, watering your mother's garden. I'm sure you remember the strange happenings that day. The wilted sunflowers, the overgrown daisies, the feral rats. That was no coincidence, Abaddon. That was a sign. Later in the day, you noticed some strange mushroom growths on the edge of these woods. Knowing your chores were complete for the day, you investigated. She'd lured you into a trap." The lifeless soul nods along, his blank eyes slowly filling with emotion as the memories return one by one.
"Well you arrived here, in this small clearing. All was well until it wasn't. Branches came to life, boulders rolled about, vines appeared from nowhere, all on a mission: to take you down. You fought- Believe me, you put up a fight... But it wasn't enough. Roughly 3 hours ago, you fell, and that was the end of one chapter, and the beginning of another." She wraps up the story, facing the suddenly quite emotional soul. Memories rush back, and he collapses in grief. The life he once knew... Gone. His family, his friends, his entire life... It's all over.
Except it wasn't.
That night, Seraphina escorted him to the immortal world, where he learned why Mother Nature had it out for him. The answer was simple: fate. He was destined to die young, and take over as the gatekeeper. He shouldered this new job with pride, and soon he'd found his place among the angels and demons. Seraphina visited him often, and he snuck in visits with his good friend Wiley whenever he had the chance. He's in a new chapter of his life now, and his mortal life is long behind him. He may not be the happiest kalon out there, but he makes it through each day. Happiness doesn't come easy to Abaddon, for his life ended far sooner than it should have- But he does his job well, just as he was destined to do.
