Encounter:
It was a bright spring day in midland Colorado when Sirius first stepped out into the light. Even just as a foal, his long legs showed the promise and prowess passed down from his sire; the other stablehands watching his "unveiling" from the pasture fence all murmured appreciatively, excited to see the newest member of the Amethyst Ridge Euphorian herd grow and thrive. His faded bay coat shown bright in the sunlight, just the barest hint of sooty along the topline of his baby coat, and Amethyst wondered how much his coat would change. It wasn't long before everyone left to attend to their respective duties, and Sirius and his dam were allowed free reign of the pasture. She quickly joined the other dams of the season, content to graze and gossip in the warming light, while Sirius made fast friends with the other foals. His big personality and sweet nature quickly made him the ringleader, even despite his obnoxiousness and show-off persona, and he reveled in their admiration. It was as if he was on cloud nine; nothing could shoot him down.
It was only a few days later that there came a strange noise from the sky, one that frightened most of the foals back to their dams. Sirius, though, was not one of them; he stared up at the strange, loud birds that passed overhead in their odd formations, often with something akin to disdain. They were not majestic and beautiful like the raptors that roosted in the mountain peaks, nor soft and quick like the finches he had grown fond of in their passing. No, these were something else, and when they began to land on the ground inside of his pasture fence, he snorted indignantly. How dare they eat his grass and scare away his finches! This was ridiculous! Quickly the colt puffed out his chest and, at the encouragement of the other foals, sought out the largest of the geese and marched forward, unfaltered by their warning honks.
He wasn't sure what he'd expected to happen, but this was definitely not it.
As soon as he'd gotten too close, the large female - probably a matriarch - had turned to face him and let out a loud honk, warning the rest of her flock of his arrival. Sirius whinnied and snorted, trying to sound as tough as possible, but the birds had no reaction. They only continued about their grazing, unconcerned of a little colt who was too big for his britches. Sirius snorted angrily and reared, "lashing" out with his forehooves in another attempt to scare them, but still the waterfowl were unfazed. He could hear the chuckles of the other foals behind him, and that only stoked his anger. Finally, in one last ditch effort, he made a mock charge at the female goose, like a wild stallion would an adversary. This time, he definitely got a reaction- and definitely not the one he wanted.
In the blink of an eye suddenly the goose was on him, honking and screeching as she bit at his legs and beat him with her wings. Shocked by her unexpected assault, Sirius spooked and tried to leap away, his own legs tangling pathetically and sending him sprawling to the ground. There was no mercy, though, as then the goose was on him, pecking at his neck and ears and face; he scrambled away as fast as possible, bolting for his dam and hiding behind her in an attempt to get away from his attacker. The goose did not give chase any further, just returned to her grazing. Sirius' dam had chuckled then, after making sure he was alright and cleaned the small cuts and bruises he'd sustained, and comforted him through the night. When he awoke in the morning, the geese were gone, and he went back to normal.
A year passed and he grew into a vibrant young yearling, strong but awkward. His dam had long since returned to her barn, and he was now the benevolent king of the pasture. He still lead the foals - now yearlings themselves - in tag and play, always stopping to make sure everyone was included and there were no problems. Everything was perfect, until one day there came a very familiar sound from above, and it made him pause. The geese had returned, including the matriarch that had humbled him the year before. This time, having been taught humility and understanding, he approached the geese calmly and with curiosity rather than aggression. The matriarch seemed to sense this, and while the rest of her flock moved away from him, she remained still. This time, they met as friends. And when the yearlings were being pulled in, Sirius saw the flock huddling down for the night near to one of the tree stands, but somehow he knew they would be gone by morning. And with how quickly the cold was descending, he could only wish them well before a stablehand led him away.
As always, Sirius was awake with the sun, and first out into the pasture to start his morning patrol. What he found took him by surprise: The matriarch was still there, though the rest of her flock had long since flown away... He approached her cautiously, only to find she'd made herself a nest and had made herself comfortable despite the snowfall. Sirius found himself feeling very protective of the bird he'd hated so fervently the year before, and he became very possessive of her and her nest, chasing off the curious colts and bringing her clumps of hay for warmth and food. Things continued like this for awhile, even to the point where the stablehands and Amethyst purchased seed, pellets, and mealworms to feed the aging goose. But in her old age, the cold made it much harder to survive, and one morning two weeks into his guarding, Sirius was let out into the pasture, only to find that the nest was empty. He searched all over the pasture madly, desperately looking for his companion - but she was nowhere to be found. Weeks passed of him desperately missing her, to the point where he became disinterested in playing with the other horses, even despondent to a point. His training began to fail, and it worried the ranch owner, Amethyst. But a surprise waited just around the corner that would fix everything.
One night Sirius was being put away in his stall, and Amethyst brought in a strange looking device that she secured to the wall. It had a red light in it that produced heat, and he cocked his head curiously. Surely he didn't need heat like that? That was for... The tiniest chirp caught Sirius' attention, and he watched in shock as Amethyst brought in the tiniest hatchling into his stall and placed it in the incubator. "She was a momma," the woman said. "I'm not sure why she was pregnant at this time of year- or at her age for that matter- but she did her best to make sure this little guy made it. I think you'll be a great companion for him."
Every since then, Sirius and Quasar have been absolutely inseparable. Due to a birth defect, he was born with one wing disfigured, so he was unable to fly away. But they formed such a strong bond that even had he been able to, the young goose would not have. It's not everyday, after all, that a goose and a horse are such good friends.
