Melody had never been what you might call “typical”. Born with a mix of characteristics, all their parents ever wanted was a daughter. So the kalon was named Melody, raised to look, think and act female in every way. Needless to say, Melody didn’t make it so easy. From childhood, they refused to play only with “girl’s toys”, wear what their parents bought them, and just generally was rather insistent on having what boys had, as well as what girls had. When split up to play games, Melody would pick whichever team had most of their friends, and tended to throw a tantrum if someone told them they couldn’t. When Melody was still young, their parents dismissed all this as “a passing phase in our daughter’s development”. But alas, as Melody grew their desire to be both and neither continued to manifest, and to top it off, they brought home not a first boyfriend but a first girlfriend, and then a first date-friend. Eventually they dated boys too, but by then it was too late. Melody’s parents could not let it be.
“Why can’t you just be a normal girl?!” Their mother cried. Melody tilted their head, confused.
“Because I’m not?” The family stood in silence. Melody sighed. “If you can’t love me how I am, then I can’t stay here any longer.” They packed their bags and moved out the next day. Now they work at a café in a different town, and make pink lemonade in the summer.
