Who do they want to be?There is such a great divide between the sea and the sky.
They want to be the one to bring those two worlds together. The sea below - so vast and so mighty.
The sky above - so infinite and so lofty.
The cavern, the firmament, the space that yawns between them, separates the world of the clouds from the world of the depths. Finned creatures make their home amongst the submerged stones and corals, but never lift their heads to look above. Winged beasts dance through the wind and soar and laugh, but never bow their heads to look below.
When I am on the beach
I watch you held aloft way out of my reachBut the
blue is constant, it carries, it delves into the currents of the air and the currents of the sea, and at the close of each day when the sun sets and paints the world in hues of
pink and
orange, the rays touch down
where the sea meets the sky, where the world comes together, and that-
That is the place that Ivory knows the bridge must be built.
But I cannot take flight
Or float upon the air the way that you mightIt's not easy, gathering the stones for the bridge. They are hidden, as wishes in wells, the last words of an unfinished story, the fog of a whisper against a cold pane of glass. They are not tangible things, but they are
beautiful, and they mark the brief existence of a moment of hope. To know, and be known. To see, to bond, to be.
Ivory finds the stones and carries them each one by one to the horizon, where the sun sets and the world comes together. They lay each stone in its place, and bid seafoam and cloud vapor to hold them secure. They build, they ache for the divide to be crossed, and they love - they love the sea, they love the sky. They belong to both. They cannot chose one family over the other.
When I am in the sea
You gaze down from the sky, trying to see meThe
blue presses in, from above and from below, and Ivory builds a bridge.
"Come," they call, when it is finished.
"Come creatures of the sea, rejoice in the wind beneath your breast.
Come, beasts of the sky, delight in the water flowing over your back.
Cross from one world to the other. Be with each other."

There is no answer.
For the creatures below and the beasts above never longed for the world of the other. Never wondered.
But Ivory does not let the bridge fade. They keep it and they care for it. They sleep upon its stones made of hope. They watch the vast and mighty sea ebb and flow against the boundaries of the infinite, lofty sky. They wait, they ache, and yearn. They love.
They love the
sea. They love the
sky.
They cannot choose one family over the other.
And someday - they have faith - someday, they will not be waiting on their bridge alone.
