Chino felt the abrupt cool breeze rustle through her pelt, and that’s when she knew: fall had arrived! Chino’s eyes widened in delight, all of the other seasons were nice and all, but autumn was her absolute favorite. why? Because fall is the only time when the trees drop their leaves. She couldn’t see color very well, until autumn rolled around. over time, the pure green landscape slowly turned to a symphony of red, orange, and yellow.
The small grove where she typically grazed in was her secret garden, she did not want those extremely sluggish and stupid cattle to move in and make a mess of her paradise! Every day, she protected this grove for one thing, and that was the leaves. In the miles upon miles of expanse Chino could roam about it and graze, this was the only place where she could see such a change in colors. Every day at the crack of dawn she would wake up and go straight to each and every tree, and study the leaves. Most of the trees in her grove were what the humans called “oak”, and they showed the most change in colors. When each leaf fell, she would try her best to get to the spot where it was falling and watch it. When a gust of wind came she would even gallop to all the spots where the leaves started to fall. She did not want to miss ONE LEAF. While studying a garnet red colored leaf, a memory formed in her mind.
“Mama, why are you watching the grass so much?” Chino asked her mother
“Well Chino,” her mother paused, thinking. “I like to watch the grass change color. I feel like it is my duty to keep track of how it changes and when. Many of the other horses that you see just eat the grass, and never stop to actually appreciate the beauty of the thing that keeps us alive.”
Chino’s ears pricked forward and her eyes widened. “Mama, you are totally right! What would we ever do without grass! Gee, I should start ap-aPREZheating (she couldn’t pronounce it correctly due to young age) grass too!”
Chino’s mother nickered. “Well, instead of grass, what are you most interested in? My mother used to watch the clouds and keep track of the rain, while I watch the grass. There are so many things you can appreciate rather than those two things, nature is very vast.”
Chino stood and thought about her mother’s words... What could she possibly do to thank the nature? That’s when her adventure started. Day after day, she would take the time to look at every little thing around her, wether it was a cow munching on tallgrass, or an ant marching on the ground. She couldn’t possibly understand why those things kept her alive and why she should take her time to appreciate them! As she was studying a rock one day, she felt a feather like thing brush her ear! She squealed and reared, thinking a big bug was trying to attack her, only to watch a thin sheet of color float down to her hooves. This thing, boasted a color she had never seen before! It was not green like the grass, brown like the cattle, or blue like the sky.... it was... it was... Chino raced back to her mother, who was grazing nearby.
“Mama!” Chino cried, “What is that thing?!” Chino nudged her mother aggressively towards the fallen thing. Her mother took one look at it and chuckled.
“Chino, what you are seeing is a red leaf. They are just like the green leaves you see in summer, but they change color in autumn and fall off.”
Chino looked at the red leaf in disbelief. “That thing is a leaf? And it turned red?!”
“Yes” chino’s mother said.
Chino studied the leaf, now looking at it closer, she saw the veins and shapes only a leaf could have. She touched it with her muzzle, to hear a crunching sound come from it.
“This is so cool!” Chino exclaimed, “But what do leaves do for us Mama?”
Chino’s mother sat thoughtfully. “I do not know what leaves do Chino, why don’t you find out?”
And that is how Chino started to observe the leaves every fall, she kept this practice, even though her mother is no longer with her. And she hopes to pass this knowledge of nature to her foal when the time comes.
I can do commissions! This is an example below. BTW this is my OC Quilin!
