Euphorian Thoroughbred #261

Postby Half Tree » Sat Oct 19, 2019 7:42 am

Welcome to the Euphorian Retired Racehorse Project
Euphorian Thoroughbreds are a rare string of the Thoroughbred breed. They come from a single farm simply called “Euphoria” that has horses with mutated genes. These allow them to be able to possess any realistic coat or markings. Everything else about the sub-type is the same. Long, strong legs, a powerful hind, and great speed. Their eyes are soft and the breed is incredibly smart, if not a bit goofy. They love kids and have the rare ability to excel in any discipline. They can grow from 15hh-18hh, though usually somewhere in the middle.
The horses readopted through the Euphorian Retired Racehorse Project are looking for a new loving home and a new job. They’ve tried racing and have either retired or decided the sport wasn’t for them. Either way, they are ready for the next chapter in their life. Some of these horses will come with a little training already, and will have their new discipline already determined. Although others you’ll get to pick how they move forwards!

    Show Name: An Unwavering Bravery
    Barn Name: Ensign [pronounced EN-SIN]
    Height: 17.2 hh
Halter: White halter, Navy Blue cheek strap with gold buckles (and if you can a gold star on the cheek strap)
    Discipline: lesson horse, mostly retired
Story: "Hey Memphis have you found anything we could look into adopting on craigslist?" Atlanta called out to her brother from the wash station. He was in the lounge scrolling through different websites on his laptop, looking to find any ERRP they could afford or adopt and give a better home. Atlanta was giving Admiral a bath since he decided it would be a fantastic idea to roll in the fresh mud that had formed after last nights storm.
"Admiral you'll be the death of me." Atlanta sighed as she continued hosing down the stallion.
"Hold on I think I found one!" Memphis called out from the lounge. He picked up his laptop and made his was over to his sister.
"It seems like someone left an older stallion out in a field. It says free to whoever can catch him." Memphis looked at his sister with an eyebrow raised.
"Alright let me put Admiral away then we'll load up Gunny and go try to capture the old man."

After loading Gunny up into a smaller trailer, Atlanta and Memphis made their way across the state to a large field where the stallion was suppose to be. When they pulled over to the rusted gate, Atlanta noticed a small white blip in the distance grazing amongst the tall grass.
Atlanta walked around to the back of the trailer, unloaded Gunny and clipped some reins to his halter and jumped onto the geldings back. She had Memphis open the gate and allowed her and Gunny to enter and make their way towards the stallion off in the distance.
"Alright Gunny i need your help on this one. He's older like you and i just need you to coax him towards me so i can get a lead around his neck." Atlanta whispered to gunny as they got closer. She noticed the stallion was caked in dirt and was covered in scrapes and cuts. It seems like he hasn't seen a lot of love in a very long time.
The stallion lifted his head as he heard Gunny's hooves crunch the decaying weeds and grass in the field. His ears flipped towards the two and he let our a startled snort.
"Its okay big guy we're not gonna hurt you." Atlanta spoke to the stallion as gunny inched closer, almost close enough to reach out and touch his nose to the stallion.
Atlanta hopped off of Gunny and allowed him to work his magic. Gunny was a special horse, he was almost always able to become friends with newcomers and was considered the welcomer of ATB.
Within a few minutes the two boys were sniffing one another and letting out small knickers. It seemed like Gunny had yet again made another friend.

After trailering Gunny and the new stallion, Atlanta and Memphis made the careful ride back home in hopes the new stallion would settle in, afterall the guy probably hasn't ever lived in a barn or been around other horses for a very very long time. The plan was to let him stick close to Gunny so he wouldn't get too stressed out in his new environment.
It took Atlanta a few minutes to successfully halter the spooked stallion, but with gunny standing close by, he made it a lot easier. She gently lead the newcomer out to a small pasture with Gunny in tow, and let the two boys out to run around and bond some more.

Since Atlantic Thoroughbreds has a knack for naming horses after military ranks, Atlanta thought Ensign would suite the stallion perfectly. He had some stories to tell but was low on the food chain.
After a few weeks of constant love, good hay and grain, and desensitizing, Ensign was a totally different horse. He was of course still very grumpy a lot, and preferred to keep to himself but still had a strong connection to Gunny. The two boys would meet up on either sides of the fence and clean each other or scratch one another necks. It was an adorable sight when it happened. Although the two aren't placed together in a pasture, their bond has never broken and whenever they get to be together the two are in-separable.

Show Name: ARR Giddeon
Barn Name: Grump, Grumpy, or Grandpa
Height: 16 hh
Halter: Artist's Choice
Discipline: Lawn Ornament (Retired)
Story: Pinching the bridge of his nose, Castiel heaved a sigh of disdain. "Amethyst, we do not need to take on another "yard decoration"; we need horses that can work and compete. I know we have a rescue, but we're getting to the point where there are more rescues than competition horses!"

Rolling her eyes, Amethyst absentmindedly pet the gray stallion's neck, carefully watching him in her peripheral vision. "Cas, you're so dramatic! You forget that some of those rescue horses /are/ competition horses, or are being retrained as them. This poor gentleman is in no shape to be retrained in any kind of competition. Niabi has already done an inspection, and she's currently testing for Bone Fragility Syndrome. She saw something in one of his xrays that worried her, and I've gone ahead and taken him off of any kind of riding, pulling, or carrying. /Especially/ if it is BFS," she said. "He is a bit on the aggressive side, though, but I think once he's neutered and socialized, if nothing else we can always use him as a travel companion for one of our other horses. And if the retraining goes well, and he becomes behaviorally sound then we could always see if he'd make a good non-riding therapy horse."

Groaning, Castiel knew his wife had him sold; no matter what he would say, she'd already thought of a logical reason to keep him. He couldn't win, he realized, and gave a soft chuckle. "Alright, fine," Castiel rolled his eyes, but couldn't stop the smile that spread across his lips. "Welcome to the family...?"

"Giddeon, but I'm calling him Grandpa," she said, grinning.

"Giddeon, I like that. Welcome to the family, Giddeon," Cas said, reaching out to pet the grey stallion's face. Before Amethyst could tell him to stop, the old stallion reared his head back, then tried to come back and bite the werewolf's hand. Luckily, Cas' reactions were much faster than that of a normal human. He cursed and took a step back, glaring daggers at the horse then turning to Amethyst expectantly.

"I told you he was aggressive?" She said sheepishly, and Castiel sighed again.

"Alright, tell me more about this beast while they're setting up his stall."

"Well, we were heading back from Pompeii's passport update when we passed this huge open field with his lone little white dot standing out by the far fence. The only shelter was dilapidated and falling apart, the water trough near to the highway was full of algae and sludge, and I saw no other food or signs of care anywhere else in that field. Admittedly I let my emotions get the better of me, and we took a detour to visit the property; the house was completely abandoned and in even worse shape than the stable. On the pasture gate there was a crude, faded sign that said "free to good home", and there was a two faded buckets with water and fresh food," she said, taking a moment to scratch behind Giddeon's ear, then immediately reward him with a treat. "We met the neighbor while Niabi and I were talking about getting him, and she told us that the elderly neighbor had passed away years ago, and up until only about eight months ago her daughter and granddaughter had been living in the house. They left in the middle of the night one evening, left her a note asking her to care for the horse until he died, and disappeared."

"So the neighbor had been caring for him that entire time?"

"Exactly. But being elderly herself, she could only do so much. Mainly just feeding and watering; she said that they barely even socialized the horse. They would advertise him as a stud with all of these fake ribbons and awards, and then just let the mares out into the pasture with him for covering. He knows what a halter is, but has no ground manners, lead manners... Hell Cas, he didn't even know what a brush was! He almost bit me on that one," Amethyst sighed. "I'm just now able to pet his neck like this, so it's going to be a long, slow process, but I think he'll get along just fine. He's already taken a liking to the herd. Funnily enough, he's seemed to befriended Coyote, of all the horses!" They both laughed at that.

"Well, alright, I trust you. Whatever I can do to help, just let me know," he smiled softly, stepping forward to plant a kiss on her forehead, before returning back to the new Nordanner he'd been lunging and working with. Amethyst smiled broadly, knowing that she was always able to convince him to save another life. Gently leading him forward, she walked the old stallion to his new stall, ready to groom and bed him down for the evening, worriedly watching his awkward gait. She just prayed fervently it wasn't BFS as she ran the brush along his beautiful white coat, but when Niabi's face appeared in his stall door, her expression told Amethyst everything she needed to know.

* Fun Fact: His "show name" Giddeon was actually the name of a horse in the since-disbanded mounted police force in my city. While the real Giddeon was a fleabitten grey and a TB/Walker cross, they both look extremely similar. The real Giddeon was also older (though was only about 12), had a very bad temper, and did not like people petting his face. I... may or may not have been bitten once or twice!

Story: I was standing out in the barn with the other horses of White Orchard when I felt cold icy fingers grip my arm. I jumped, turning around, ready to swing when I discovered it was one of my barn hands, drenched. "Remi! What are you doing here?? Why are you soaking wet??"
Remi looked sad, and terrified and had trouble with spitting the words out, water droplets falling from her pixie cute hair and tumbling down her face. "There's a stallion in texas, he needs help. He's being used for backyard breeding. He's never been inside the paddocks except to be sired. Please can we help him, Alina? I'll do anything, but he's sitting out in a muddy pasture as we talk, getting drenched in rain. If we're gonna help him, we gotta do it now."
I looked at Remi, her eyes sad, but they had a little glimmer of hope. I nodded. "Alright. Load the trailer up. Halter, lead rope, saddle, blakets. Lots and lots of blankets. Towels. Grab it all."
She nodded, already running out of the barn and she stopped before she ran out the doors, "Oh, I forgot to say, he's also pretty feral. He's gotten almost no human contact, so he might be a lil' difficult old man."
I rolled my eyes, and started getting the extra tack and treats while Remi rushed around grabbing the extra towels and blankets.

About forty-five minutes later we started pulling down a mucky dirt, now mud, road that ran about a half a mile before we arrived to pick this guy up. The owners had abandoned him in the pasture after realizing he was getting too old to breed. He couldn't do it anymore.
He was all alone, and his coat was soaking a drenched in mud and rain. He was dirty beyond belief and his hooves haven't been trimmed in eons. He was terrified and shaking and freezing.

The rain hadn't let down, and this guy looked like he was crying, his forelock matted to his head, his head hanging. He didn't even want to look up.

Remi and I had approached him slowly, hands out filled with treats. He wouldn't lift his head, even to eat the treats. Remi had said he was feral but he wasn't moving or shying away. He just seemed so... tired. He looked like he was tired of fighting. He was cold and he just wanted help.

Remi had climbed over the fence and started feeding him attention and putting towels on him while I took bolt cutters to the padlock and chain these people had kept him in with. We loaded him up in the trailer, got him laying down, and covered him in towels and blankets before heading back to the ranch.

When we arrived, all we were concerned about was getting this sopping wet, muddy horse into a clean, warm stall with fresh food an water, and him making it through the night.
The struggle to get him into a stall was the most terrifying part. He resisted, bucked, and reared. A lot of strength for the old man, but it made me fear it might be his last burst of energy before falling.
Somehow we managed to get him into a stall and he immediately gulped down some water before eating every ounce of grain we had given him, and had already moved on to the hay. We watched him for a bit, eventually slumping down and falling asleep in front of his stall.

Morning came, and i jumped awake, angry at myself I had allowed myself to fall asleep when I noticed Remi was already in his stall. He didn't seem feral at all when he interacted with her. It was like he knew she came to his rescue and this was his home and he'd be fine.
She was sitting by him, his head resting on her shoulder as she scratched his head and ears. "I promise you, you won't ever have to make a single baby again. You will always have food and water. You will always have a warm place to tuck yourself in at night. I'll be here. And we'll help you."

Remi hadn't realized I had been watching them until I sniffled, wiping a heart warming tear that had fallen from my eyes and started to roll down my cheek. She smiled sweetly at me, making my heart burst. She got up, gave this handsome guy a smooch on his head before leaving his stall.

"Can we make him a therapy horse for the rest of his days?"
I nodded. All we had to do was get him socialized. He was already therapeutic. He had already touched my and my stable hands heart. All he had to do was show up.

3 months later
Remi and I had been working on getting him socialized after he had settled in. He was doing quite well, just needed some work on walking on a lead. Otherwise he had responded well to all other training. He was friendly, and forgiving, and loving despite all he had been through. But after he realized we were here to help, he openly entrusted us with his life.

Who said you can't teach an old horse new tricks?

Congrats!
I'll be adding to the narrative a little bit though. [insert eye emoji here]

When all three stables come to the siren call of a horse in need they happen to arrive almost at the same time. Amethyst is already leading the stallion that brought them together. They all stop to chat and look him over only to be surprised when he turns perked ears back to his muddy field and lets out a loud bellow. Everyone turns to look and seeing nothing but mud and the tall overgrown plants around the edge look at each other confused. Suddenly, a call is heard in reply and looking closer they see another set of ears peeking over the hedge covering one side.

The group moves over to investigate and realize he was not actually the only horse on the property. There is another paddock similar in design hidden behind this hedge, there stands another skinny and dirty stallion also white in colour. He is perky despite his poor condition and eagerly reaches his nose over the fence towards the horse Atlanta is holding the reins of. His mane is surprisingly short despite the neglect but rough as if he has been rubbing it out. Seeming to have chosen his people he settles in to take a nibble at Gunny's mane. xxx

Deciding to be extra thorough everyone takes a further look around and find another even smaller paddock tucked away. There is a worn path leading away in the mud to where a small shed stands half leaning to the left and rotting. Those leading horses wait as the staff of White Orchard move forward to check it out. The sounds of the other horses seem to cause something to stir inside and loud snort echoes behind the shut doors. Carefully opening them the third stud is found, forgotten in the shed he isn't as muddy as the others but his health is much worse. Having been trapped inside he hadn't been able to move around and the loss of muscle tone is pronounced. His coat is a rosy hue, looking almost dusty in the dim light. His head is lifted despite the exhaustion etched onto his face and he blinks tired eyes into the added light. xxx

It would seem everyone would be going home with a new project horse this day.
