Competition: "He's a ladies man alright," one of the helping hands at White Orchard said.
Houdini had been introduced to the horses that resided at White Orchard a few times prior to officially trying to adopt him. He had been involved in racing and somehow injured his leg beforehand and after being taken to the vet, they said they could help,
what luck! but his leg would never been the same and he couldn't race any longer.
Houdini had gotten along with everyone just fine, except some of the stallions were
slightly jealous that all the mares hadn't swooned over them when they got taken in. What was the difference? His cream colored spooty booty?
While the hands were talking about whatever it is humans talk about, Houdini was getting familiar with the ladies.
Halo,
Casstielle, and
Hannah were all surrounding him, commenting on his gorgeous cremello coat, and his bright beautiful blue eyes, the other stallions huddled on the other side of the pasture, jealous of the stallion, basking in all his glory.
The ladies had all introduced themselves, and when Houdini went walking, they were all trailing right beside him. Little did they know, he was just a flirt and enjoyed making his competition jealous.
Before he came here, he had never had much attention paid to him from so many beautiful ladies, let alone
one. So all he could do was bask in the glory of feeling handsome. And little did his "competition" know, he really didn't want to seriously step on any hooves. He just enjoyed getting a rise out of them, seeing them getting frustrated that it wasn't
them being surrounded and doted on.
The girls would bicker with each other while he took a break from them to eat or sleep or just take a walk by himself, angry that they all wanted the same stallion and they absolutely
would not share him with the others. He was going to be one of theirs and they were set on it. He'd occasionally look back at the ladies, smile and wink, sending them into a frenzy of who he was actually directing his smile to.
A couple weeks passed by, the same behavior continuing from the mares, and they gradually got more aggressive with each other. Nipping, biting, stomping, and even charging at and trying to kick each other. Eventually he decided, it was time to stop the games.
He gathered the ladies together, all of them suspecting he'd finally choose one of them.
"I'm not a toy. I cannot simply be claimed. I am more than just a potential mate. I am a retired Euphorian Thouroghbred with a
heart and feelings of his own. And I admit, it was wrong to come in acting flashy and like I was the hottest thing to walk this Earth. It was wrong of me to make these other stallions jealous on purpose, when I really don't want any of this. I'm happy to be friends, but until you ladies grow up, you don't stand a chance at being my life partner. All of us. Our behavior upon my arrival was
shameful."
The mares' eyes were wide. Hannah looked like she was about to cry, Casstielle taking it with a grain of salt, and Halo just seemed kind of bored but intrigued to know and hear feedback on the way she handled things.
Casstielle suddenly piped up. "But we can all be friends at least,
right?"
Houdini smiled and nodded. "Yes of course. But this can't be happening again. We're all grown ups and we shouldn't be acting like yearlings, for crying out loud."
Halo nodded in agreement. "You're right. We all acted
awful. I apologize for my part in all of this."
Hannah remained silent, still quietly salty that it didn't turn out how she wanted it to.
Casstielle smiled and apologized at well.
Houdini smiled at them all, relieved he no longer had to put up a flashy front, nodded his head in their direction and turned away to go make friends with all the stallions. He never had bro friends. And he sincerely looked forward to having friends and a role to play at White Orchard. He was able to make things right, and only then was he truly happy. He realized being flashy and a ladies man didn't really get you anywhere and he went about making friends the wrong way.
