Coy, as they've started calling him due to his intelligent and clever nature, has always been an explorer at heart, driven by the promise of adventure and food. When he was first brought to Amethyst Ridge, the poor thing was way too thin for a horse of his stature, despite being boasted as "working fit". It took Amethyst and the ranch staff months to get him to gain weight on a very strict diet, as his first night he broke out and attacked one of the feed rooms; he ended up getting colic from his little escapade, and it set his recovery back even farther. It added quite a bit on to the on site vet
Niabi's hard work. While he may have never attacked the feed room and gorged himself into a food coma again, once the colic was gone, Coy never stopped disappearing on his nightly adventures.
The first time he completely disappeared, he was gone for nearly 48 hours. He had been forcibly removed from his previous owners by Animal Protective Services, and given to Amethyst Ridge to rehab for a future adoption event. Amethyst and her riders fell in love with him quite quickly, and ended up making him a part of their stables. The entire time he was undernourished, though, they had zero problems until he got his strength back. When he went missing, she was scared that somehow (however unlikely it was) someone had slipped passed security and stolen him back; he'd been a very successful racer in his short career, and still brought in a lot of money through covering requests. She wouldn't put it past the old owner to try and get him back, either legally or illegally. After all, he'd already barraged her with threatening phone calls and emails wanting to take her to court. Those two days were absolutely horrible, spending countless hours searching hundreds of miles through the woods and ridgelines. When they finally returned back to the stables, though, they found him snoozing in his stall, as if that's where he'd been the entire time. Amethyst was perplexed, knowing that none of her staff had taken him out, but grateful he was home and safe. She decided that an extra eye would be kept on him at all times, and she put a simple carabiner to keep him locked in at night. A few days passed, and they didn't notice him out of his stall, and Amethyst began to relax. Suddenly, once again, he was gone without a trace, carabiner still in the same locked position the stablehand had secured it in the night before.
In an effort not to overreact, Amethyst gave it a few hours before she was going to send out a search party, but when one of the staff went to retrieve Mesa from her stall, Coy was standing there with his head over the gate, ears perked, waiting to be let out into the pasture. Even more confuzzled, Amethyst jokingly came to the conclusion that he was being abducted by aliens, and that at least they were bringing him back when they were done. His disappearances still troubled her, though, to the point where she'd often lie awake at night and worry, even after changing the carabiner to a number lock, then a key-padlock. She began to walk down to the stable every so often, and he'd always be there, but by sunrise when the stablehands would make morning feedings, he would be gone. It was infuriating. And, to add to that, he began to gain weight very, very quickly. Her suspicions continued to rise, and finally Amethyst decided to have a stake out. She stayed awake all night in the stable, watching for Coy to work his magic, but he never did anything other than shift or sleep. Amethyst felt like she was going crazy.
After about a month of all of this craziness, the tech who handled her home security systems finally made his way back around. The Euphorian barn was the newest building, and hadn't been set up for monitoring and video recording yet; as he was installing the cameras, Amethyst knew she'd catch him in the act, and be able to figure out how he was doing what he did. But, in the end, the camera was set up
just shy of Coy's stall, and while they were able to catch him finagling the main stable door open and leaving, how he was getting out of his stall itself remained a mystery, until one of the security officers broke his route one morning to grab his jacket where he'd left it in the Euphorian stable. He'd just been able to see through one of the windows and he watched in amazement as Coy reared back on his hind legs and
jumped through that tiny upper opening of his stall- only to get his hind end
stuck. The guard couldn't contain his laughter at the absurdity of the entire situation, and quickly called Amethyst down to the stable, and within minutes all of the on-site staff were struggling to help him down despite their uncontrollable laughter. Coy had in turn gained so much weight that he could no longer "thread the needle", thus thwarting his own escape plans. All of this was an easy fix, now that they knew how he was doing it, and the escaping finally stopped.
It was nearly three months later when Amethyst was in town, and she saw "Missing Horse" posters with pictures of Coy. Concerned, she called the number to make sure it wasn't his old owner trying anything funny; the elderly woman she spoke to was so relieved to get the phone call, and she learned that when Coy escaped, he was heading to their neighboring farm for a morning feeding of hot mash, then was being showered with as many assorted treats as he wanted before jumping their pasture fence and ambling his way back home. The woman was disappointed to learn that he already had an owner, as her granddaughter had become intensely attached to the stallion, but Amethyst promised that they could come visit him whenever they wanted. The grandparents and young girl did just that.
