Euphorian Thoroughbred #118

Postby ExVenor » Thu Sep 12, 2019 2:30 pm

Welcome to the Euphorian Retired Racehorse Project
Euphorian Thoroughbreds are a rare string of the Thoroughbred breed. They come from a single farm simply called “Euphoria” that has horses with mutated genes. These allow them to be able to possess any realistic coat or markings. Everything else about the sub-type is the same. Long, strong legs, a powerful hind, and great speed. Their eyes are soft and the breed is incredibly smart, if not a bit goofy. They love kids and have the rare ability to excel in any discipline. They can grow from 15hh-18hh, though usually somewhere in the middle.
The horses readopted through the Euphorian Retired Racehorse Project are looking for a new loving home and a new job. They’ve tried racing and have either retired or decided the sport wasn’t for them. Either way, they are ready for the next chapter in their life. Some of these horses will come with a little training already, and will have their new discipline already determined. Although others you’ll get to pick how they move forwards!

Show Name: The Belle of the Ball
Barn Name: Belle
Gender: Mare
Age: 7 years
Height: 16.3 hh
Halter: Brown leather
Discipline: Eventing
Competition: Belle’s first time meeting a stallion is one to remember...

When she was about two, we got her from a barn that kept their mares and stallions completely separate. She never even knew there were stallions on the same property as her. Even her interactions with male humans was very limited. The old barn had some strange methods for their race horses.

Thankfully the owner informed us ahead of time about her lack of interaction with stallions, so we knew to take things slow with her. Our stables are sectioned based off of breed/species rather than gender - like her old stables - so we knew that placing her in a stall right away would mean immediate interactions with our stallions. So*, for the first few nights, we kept her in the pasture to acclimate. At the time, we kept her with a few of our mares Aries, Frigg, and Sahara. We knew that those three were very well mannered mares and would definitely make her feel welcome. We thought that putting her with two breeds she had never before seen or interacted with would make for a hopefully simple introduction to stallions. Boy were we wrong!

After the first week in the pasture with the three mares, I felt comfortable enough to move her into a stall. I made sure to move some horses around so she would be a fair distance from any stallions. I’d keep her in that stall for a week, then gradually move her closer to stallion stalls. This continued for a few weeks until she had only one stall between her and a stallion.

Finally, it was time to move her into the final stall on her acclimation journey. She had not acted out in any way whatsoever during her entire time with us.

“This is going to be easy-peasy!” I thought to myself, preparing to put her halter on and switch that stall one last time.

Lead rope in hand, the two of us walked out of the stall and into the aisle. She hadn’t made any type of movement or expression that told me she was nervous or tense. Her soon to be neighbor Myth heard the commotion, took his head out of his grain bucket and looked at us from his stall. Belle must not have known he was in his stall and slightly spooked.

I quickly walked her down the aisle and sent her out to pasture for a little bit to try and calm her down. While she was out there, I decided it would be the perfect time to grab Myth and put him in the pasture next to her. This way they could meet one another, but still have the space to move around and give the other space if need be.

When Belle was at the other end of the pasture, not paying attention, I slipped away and grabbed Myth. I got back to the pastures with Myth and Belle was still unaware of what I was doing. It was the perfect time to sneak Myth into the pasture next to her. Myth, being naturally curious of Belle, slowly made his way toward the fence between the two pastures and called to her. Belle turned toward him, and began walking over to him. Once she got closer, she seemed to realize that something about him was different… He smelled different… Looked a little different… She got very tense and confused, continuing to look at him. He happily called to her again, giving her a sweet, friendly look. She got closer to him, her ears slightly pinned, but not enough to say for certain that she was angry.

She walked right up to the fence, turned around and started bucking like there was no tomorrow. Myth saw her hooves quickly making their way to his face, turned and bolted to the other side of the pasture.

Belle kept on kicking, and I heard a loud crack… She broke the fence.

“Oh no… not good…” I said to myself, grabbing her lead rope as fast as I could and running into the pasture. I knew I wouldn’t be able to hook her lead rope to the halter, so I tied the rope into a loop and tried to be a cowgirl. After about three failed throws, I finally looped her. I really hadn’t thought very far ahead… she had no intention of stopping with the straight path to Myth. I got dragged a little, thankfully the rope was long enough that I wasn’t in much danger of getting crushed. I got my footing and quickly threw myself onto her back. I pulled as hard as I possibly could on the rope around her neck, grasping at her short mane for some extra control.

She started to slow down, and I got her to turn away from Myth. I grabbed the cheekpiece of her halter, jumped off, and clipped her lead rope on as fast as possible. I quickly led her away from Myth and tied the other end of the rope to a tree.

“Try to break this.” I said cockily, tying the last knot on the lead.

I then went to grab Myth and calmed him down. I put his lead rope on, and slowly brought him over to Belle. This time, he will be in control of the interaction, and hopefully there will be less damage… Myth slowly approached her, and sniffed at her side. Belle was incredibly tense. He seemed to realize this, and made sure to be very slow around her. He was very friendly, and made sure not to get in her face. His kind approach seemed to make Belle less tense, and she slowly turned her head towards him, looking at him with friendly eyes for the first time.

It’s now been a few years since their first… rough… encounter, and the two of them are now quite good friends. They enjoy being neighbors now, and often spend time together in the field.

Show Name: Μια μάχη γυναικών - "A Womans Fight" in Greek
Barn Name: Deianeira - (Man Destroyer)
    Gender: Mare
    Age: 7 yo
    Height: 17.2 hh
Halter: dark brown leather with gold hardware
    Discipline: Cutting
Competition: Lets say Deianeira's first encounter with a Stallion was unpleasant and one that left a lasting impact on her life. It began on the race track at one of her first introduction races. She was new, and green. Didn't know the unspoken rules among the veteran racers and was bright eyed and bushy tailed. She was full of excitement and ready to win. However there was one problem. An older stud who was brazen and egotistical. He would side eye Deianeira and pin his ears back each time he came too close.
As Deianeira and her rider made their way out to the starting gates, the stallion came up on her left side, aiming to bite the mare on the behind as he passed. He succeeded in doing so and in return Deianeira kicked out and slammed her back hoof into his chest. No one took a bite at her, and she was tired of this stallion targeting her because she was new.
She was competing against a majority of studs who were jeering in the gates, all making sly comments about Deianeira and how she wasn't strong or fast enough to win. She was new and lacked experience.
The bell rang overhead, echoing throughout the track and into the stands, and suddenly the gates flung open and all the horses too off. Deianeira bolted out, flinging herself and her rider forward to keep up with the other studs. "Come on Deianeira you need to go faster", her rider yelled out above the sound of thundering hooves. The mare pushed herself harder, veering left towards the inside. She began passing her competitors one by one. Suddenly she was in third position, coming up behind the older stallion who had been agitating her all day at the tracks. She widened her stride to get up beside him, as there were now neck and neck. The stallion looked at her, she could see the anger in his eyes. He was not about to let Deianeira pass him. He pulled forward in front of Deianeira and suddenly slowed down, causing Deianeira to slam into him and then slide down into the dirt. Deianeira fell down on her side, twisting her leg as she did which put her in a great amount of pain. As the rest of the studs passed they all whinnied with happiness, after all racing was a boys sport to him and now Deianeira would no longer be a threat.

After Deianeiras accident, she was never able to race simply because she had a hatred for stallions. She was retired early and re-homed to a local ERRP rehabilitation facility where her injury was treated and she made a full recovery. However due to her disliking for stallions she was never able to compete in team competitions that involved her being around studs, so she was selected to start training as a cutting horse. It was perfect to handle her anger and she didn't have to worry about any studs getting in her way.

Show Name: ARR Let's Play A Game
Barn Name: Mohawk; Abenaki, man eater. "Mo"
Gender: Mare
Age: 4 yrs
Height: 15.2 hh
Halter: Surprise me
Discipline: Flat race (retired from Steeplechase)
Competition: From the moment she was born, the fire in her eyes shone brighter than the sun. In fact, she was on her feet for the first time within fifteen minutes, albeit still wobbly, but with zero outside help other than her own determination. Even as a foal, she was independent, boisterous, and slightly overbearing; but she was the leader of the pack, and she had so much potential in the years ahead of her.

Even as the colts in her season grew into their attitudes, Mo still remained the most brazen and strongest-willed of the group, despite her strange size. She was the smallest of the season, even despite having the tallest sire and dam in the stud farm, and found herself at a major disadvantage in both her social standing and career training. And that, my friends, only increased her attitude and reinforced her loud and obnoxious nature. In the end, she was still the leader of the pack. In training, her size was both an asset and a detriment; her smaller size made her faster and lighter, but her shorter legs made it harder for her to clear the steeplechase jumps on the track. It was a double-edged sword; she'd save energy because she was smaller and more aerodynamic, but she'd spend more energy putting strength into clearing the jumps that she'd exhaust herself before the final stretch. This led to a lot of teasing and mocking, in which she'd then get into fights and confrontations with her competitors. Her sire's words rang in her ears after every fight: "Make sure you're the strongest horse in the field". In her original stud farm, she was affectionately called "Alpha Mare", because she ruled whatever pasture they put her into.

When she was retrained and sold as a 3-year old flat racer, she was quickly snatched up by Amethyst Ridge Ranch to bring new blood into their racing program. She was fast, beautiful, and one of the ARR jockeys fell in love with that no-nonsense, cocky attitude she displayed while on the sale floor. The moment they brought her home, though, that mood of her became much more than just an "on the track" display. In the Euphorian pasture, Vēlox was lounging around with Mesa and Ziva, enjoying the fall sunshine when Amethyst brought Mo and another new mare into the gate and turned them loose. Immediately Mo began to display, flagging her tail and arching her neck; she looked like a stallion trying to impress a rival. Amethyst wasn't sure whether to laugh or try and retrieve her, so she just stood and watched worriedly. When Mo finally made it up to the bay stallion, she snorted loudly. "This is now my pasture, boy. Better fall in line," she snorted, then walked over to introduce herself to the other mares, the younger mare that followed was hot on her heels.

Vēlox stared behind her with confusion. "Boy? I'm older than you! What are you even...?" He rolled his eyes. "You know what? Whatever. You wanna "rule", go for it," he muttered, returning to his grazing.

With a cocky grin, Mo looked back over her shoulder at her newest protege. "Remember, when somewhere new, always be the first one to assert your dominance."

Re: Euphorian Thoroughbred #118

She had never been one for social events, sticking to her side of the pasture when the other herd members would rather clump together. Leif had come from a fairly small farm, sharing the pasture with five or so other highly social mares. She learned quickly that she'd rarely get time alone, and resigned herself to the social nudges and playful tail flicks her herd mates would send her way. She was shy and naive, sticking to her own corner of the field while the socialites ran the rest.

This place... This place was different. There were more trees, for one, not to mention the pasture was much more expansive. It reminded her of the wide-open plains of the West, and if she squinted she could make out the movement of swishing tails and coat twitches. Sonata Stables was truly a sight to behold, and Leif was anxious to sink her hooves into the fertile soil. After a small checkup, she was released into the pasture, and Leif immediately threw herself to the ground to roll in the sweet lemongrass and damp soil. Rolling around became boring quick, so she took to the high hills, passing by some curious new herd mates, you trailed behind her slowly to do some detective sniffs.

That's when she saw him. He was beautifully terrifying, much taller than she and even chewed at the grass with grace. He didn't seem to notice her prolonged gaze until she had turned away, resorting to finding an area to herself. She was afraid; she'd never encountered a stallion before, yet one as tall as he was and for a first meeting it was quite the shocking one. She tried to act normal, grazing as she pleased, as curious mares stood downwind to her. She had been so concentrated on stabilizing her shaky legs that she didn't notice the giant stallion had approached her. She jumped back, a small squeak leaving her mouth and prompting her to lower her head in embrassment. The male huffed, shifting so he was beside her.

"You alright, Miss...?"

"Leif. I-It's Leif."

"I mean, there are plenty of leaves here, are you sure you're oka-"

"Leif!!! It's my n-name. I-I'm sorry, I overstepped-"

"Easy now, you're alright. No worries," the stallion said, his eyes sparkling in amusement, "The name's Pluviam. I lead this ragtag group, so if you have any troubles let me know."

"T-Thanks. It means a lot." Lief whispered, the stallion's size seeming to overpower her voice. He huffed in response, swishing his tail and calmly leaving Lief to her own devices.

Later that night, a bell could be heard in the distance, calling for the pastured horses to begin heading to the barn for the night. Only then did many of the herd members introduce themselves to Leif, offering their assistance with anything she needed. She had met more stallions during the introductions, but none of them made her more fearful than Pluviam. She waited alongside the fence-line, watching the flickering of the fireflies in the adjacent treeline. Back at her old farm, she was lead to her stall much earlier and was never able to see them.

"Pretty neat huh?" Leif, jumped for the umpteenth time that day, whipping her head around to see Pluviam slowly approaching her. He stood beside her, Leif all too aware of her shaky legs and faint breathing. She dared look up, shocked to see the male's eyes languidly caressing the treeline, a small smile dancing across his lips.

"Yeah. They really are beautiful." She finally answered, taking a deep breath and exhaling softly. They sat in peaceful silence, the sound of hooves sounding farther away than they were.

"They only live for so long, you know. They spend all this time under the soil and only live for around a week to reproduce. Then that's it," Pluviam whispers, the flickering of the fireflies reflecting in his icy eyes. He turned to Lief, and for the first time, she was able to meet his gaze " Never settle, Leif. Who knows how long we have on this earth? Grow from your foundation and flourish; look where you are now, take a deep breath and live life to the fullest."

Leif couldn't find any words to say, the stallion's running through her head like wildfire. He was right, maybe it would be fun to... express herself. To be who she truly is, to be open and explore the things she doesn't know she possesses. She let out another sigh, the nickers and snorts of the other horses becoming background noise to the beating of her heart, and she allowed herself to smile under the light of the fireflies.
