user: suds, hi! / name: hopekit hopepaw hopestream / gender: molly / age: 4 months [ 4 moons ]

xxxxthunder shook the camp as lilystar and sunsong scattered themselves.

they checked every crevice of the moat they had tunneled out earlier that day, making sure it was an arms length deep to accommodate the water flow if the river flooded. covered in mud and paws aching, the she-cats prepared for the worst. over the raging storm, lilystar yowled “im going to go check the river,” whether sunsong heart her or not, the leader took off out of camp.

leaves and fallen sticks whacked at her sides as she strode through her territory. already the ground was mush, and she released her claws to gain some traction. as the river dipped in and out of sight, she feared it may flood. she skidded to a stop at the rocky ledge, digging her paws into the pebbles. the rain pelted down on her, flattening her whiskers to her face.

in the murky water, something thrashed. she squinted through the storm, trying to make it out. it wiggled too weird to be a fish, and had some type of fur on it. “hel-“ the mass cried, falling into a burble. the mew was little, far, far, too little. lilystar gasped in horror, her mind rolling like the clouds overhead. “okay,” she thought, closing her eyes and digging her claws into the loose rocks. “okay.”

she wiggled her hind and leaped into the water, sighing in relief as her teeth hit scruff. she fought against the current, pleading to starclan all the way. the kit fell limp on instinct, or at least, lilystar prayed it was instinct. when her sore paws caught shore, she heaved herself onto the bank. the kit was drenched, but she had no time to attempt to warm them up. not in the storm.

determined, she scooped the kit back up into her mouth, pelting through the woods, head low as to push against any low hanging branches. she burst into camp, ushering quickly into the medicine cats den. sunsong had coated her den in clay earlier that week, renewing the structure and weaving new branches together. lilystar and her were both thankful for it, because the den was calm and warm. a contrast to the weather outside.

“hows it looking?” sunsong asked worriedly, licking the kittens fur upwards so they may dry faster. “the river or the kit?” she said, exasperated, flopping down beside the sopping cat. “both,” she joked, but her tone was flat. she was anxious. “river is rising slowly. i dont know about them. i found them in the river, twirling like a leaf.” the leader explained, watching as sunsong moved back once the kit began breathing regularly.

“theyre pretty scratched up,” she noticed the scars peppering the little kittens body. “nothing you cant fix,” lilystar said with a light tone. “lets hope for the best. im sure theyll be alright.”

Winter had not been kind to Brightclan. Blizzard succeeded blizzard in harrowing succession. The wind drove snow into hills deeper than cats. Prey had been scare and hope scarcer still. The first signs of spring had been welcomed with great celebration.
The celebration proved to be premature when began the event that would later be referred to as “The Great Thaw.” First it was puddles, puddles that would not seep into the earth before freezing again come nightfall. Then, the melt began to run. Down from the northern mountains, lake-fulls of water began tearing through the riverbank. Ancient boulders were uprooted and rushed downstream, trees were felled as the water tore away the soil surrounding their roots, and Brightclan was forced into retreat as the hazard grew.
One warrior, however, allowed her curiosity to get the better of reasonable caution. The description of a water ravenous for earth simply thrilled Rainwhisker. So much so, in fact, that one evening she resolved to forgo her nightly meal to satiate a different sort of hunger. She slunk away from camp unnoticed. The river’s roar hit her ears first. Its urgent power drew her in. With every stride her paws sunk deeper into the softening ground.
Suddenly, there it was. Visually comparable to a horizontal waterfall, it was a cataclysm for the ages. Rainwhisker gaped, unblinking for a long moment. Before her raged power beyond comprehension.
Except, something else entirely drew her attention from the sight of awe. Something waving unnaturally in the shallows beside a fallen tree a few steps downstream. It was difficult for Rainwhisker to make out its form as the river’s spray obfuscated. She cautioned forward, understandably having regained a sense of fear, which quickly evolved into urgency as the form was revealed to be a submerged kit.
Rainwhisker believed herself to be under no delusion of the difficulty of the task before her, but even that belief was ultimately rooted in delusion. The placement of one paw upon the trunk which floated precariously above the tumultuous surface required muscle control Rainwhisker had previously thought to be beyond her own capacity. She trudged onward, doing her best to ignore the rush of water which neared as the tree dipped lower with her added weight and the shaking of her legs as they struggled to grip the slippery log which separated her and probable critical injury. Several carefully considered paw steps later the kit was within reach.
Starclan, give me strength
Rainwhisker stooped into the water, clasping the kit’s scruff between her teeth. With a yank, the drenched kit joined her on the log. He was cold to the touch, and limp. The tree groaned with the added weight. Rainwhisker knew caution was a luxury she could no longer afford. Without considering consequence, she lept.
Rainwhisker lay in the mud, panting furiously, curling herself around the kit.
Thump thump.
A heartbeat! Joy overcame Rainwhisker as she managed to breathe out, “You’re safe now.”

Prompt:
Tigerwhisker was walking past the river, heading deeper into the trees. As he was passing by, he spotted something out of the corner of his eye. What was that? Some kind of human trash? Too interested in the possibilities, he padded closer. He began to make out more details, and -- Was that a cat?! He ran towards the small figure, panic in his heart. It was a kitten on the bank of the river, soaking wet, covered in scratches, and completely still. He gave it a quick sniff. It was alive, but barely. He licked it to get some of the water off, and hopefully to get it to wake up. Nothing seemed to work, and the only thing Tigerwhisker could think to do was bring it to camp. He gently took the kitten in his teeth and ran as fast as he could back home.
"Help! There's -- I -- " Tigerwhisker tried to get the words out but he was in such a panic that he couldn't explain. The medicine cat quickly took over and eventually the kitten began to stir. Tigerwhisker let out a huge breath of relief, and let himself relax for the first time since he spotted the kitten.

"Hey there, my name is Tigerwhisker,"
"...Hi... You're the one who found me?"
"Yes I am! What's your name?"
"My mother called me Blue but she's not here anymore. Can I stay here?"
"Yes of course, little one. Welcome to Lightclan,"
