Vinnie could feel her heart beating out of her chest. The faint shadows cast by the waxing gibbous moon overhead told her it was almost one in the morning. Her eyes wide, she stumbled though the dark. She knew it would only be a matter of time until she was found, she could only pray that it would be by those she trusted. Without warning, distant lanterns and shouts caught her attention, and they didn't sound friendly. Staggering backwards, she felt panic rising in her throat. The tree root she nearly tripped over earlier got the best of her this time, but hands grabbed her and pulled her up before she hit the dirt. She almost yelped but stopped herself, trying instead to see who was there. She could hear the shouts growing louder by the second.
"Lavi we need to go now," a hasty familiar voice whispered in her ear. Her heart skipped a beat as she recognized it. Instantly she embraced him, feeling her fear ebbing away as she buried her head into his chest.
"I knew you would come back for me!"
He acknowledged with a short string of curses before scooping Lavinia up and scrambling up the nearest accessible tree, hiding them both from sight. They watched as the guards ran beneath them, holding each other close and shaking with the adrenaline.
"I swear you always want hugs at the worst times."
