DAY FIFTEEN

The lake reflected brightly, a shimmering turquoise against the brilliant white snow caps. The water pulled at the horse's heart strings, striking up a beautiful melody. The issue was, they didn’t know how to swim. Mint eyes scanned the water's edge, promising a reckless attempt. One hoof, then another broke the water's surface. Gaining confidence, they slowly waded forwards, until they were belly deep. Smiling, and thinking that this wasn’t bad at all, they took another step, and a startled cry broke the silence, cut off by water. As the liquid closed around the horse’s head, a mouth opened, screaming silently into the blue depths. Legs thrashed out wildly in panic, their eyes had widened, like a frightened child's would.
Sinking into the endless void, hooves crashed into the sediment, and with a weak but desperate push, forced the drowning horse’s head above water. Gasping, they reached out for the shore, dragging their body onto the grassy bank. Retching up water, they lay there, eyes closed in terror. Peeking at the sky, and heaving a great sigh, they shakily stand up. With an angry look directed at the water, they step into its cool recess again. Slowly, they circle in the shallows, throwing distrustful glances at the steep drop. Taking a deep breath, they slide into the deep end. The cold water gives them a sharp intake of air, but they stay calm, floating by gently paddling to stay afloat. Nervously, they push forwards, starting to do laps.
The smile returns, as they gain confidence. The water is glacier cold, but the exercise warmed their blue roan coat up. Finding they could spin around quickly in the water, they do. Laughing, water splashing around, they revel in the wonder of water. By accident, they glance down at the unfriendly depths. They begin to panic as the flashbacks of near death hit them. Scrambling out of the water, they gallop away from the water, and stand head down, panting on the shore. Glaring at the evil blue, they throw their head up and stare. Shoving a loud snort from their nostrils, they decide it’s time to leave. Whisking around, they trample back through the forest. Managing to just barely drag their hooves over some of the more prominent roots, they push through the underbrush. A hoof gets caught in a hole, and they take a hard hit to the shoulder as they crash into the earth. Moans of pain ring out as they stumble into the upright position, twisted foreleg hanging in defeat. An angry buzzing whorls into life behind them. Turning in panic, they realized they managed to step into a beehive, just their luck.
Turning, they limp-run through the hoard, getting stung numerous times, and pelt back towards the lake. Hesitating on the bank, they turn and look back at the angry mob, nearly upon them. Turning to face the lake, they grit their teeth and leap into the water. Making a quick calculation, and realizing that since bees can fly, and half of their body was exposed, they’d still get stung. But, they realized, bees can’t swim, so if they, say, sank to the bottom, and held their breath for long enough, they’d escape. Taking one large gulp of air, and nervousness, they let themselves sink. Trying to keep calm as their heart ran the Grand Prix, their eyes drifted to the black mass blotting out the sky. Feeling the fear and cold, they shivered at the bottom of the darkness. Waiting for what felt like years on a limited oxygen supply, they realized the flash mob had left. Struggling upwards, they shot out of the water, gasping yet again. Shaking out their darkened fur, they vowed to never, ever, step foot in another body of water, although it should be mentioned that vow got broken later. Sighing with disgust, they turned and once again limped through the woods, staying out of the way of any mysterious holes though.
