why is one of their paws black?: When Pastelwings was born she had a black paw which was a sign of death within Pastelwings pack. Though her fellow pack mates were mean, cruel and not so nice to her, she kept on smiling. Soon enough a pack member had passed on and soon there was no rain, food or water within Pastelwings pack. Soon later the pack became weak and the alphas of the pack exiled Pastelwings from the pack. Heartbroken, Pastelwings set out to find her own home, every creature stopped and stared at her with anger and hate. Pastelwings climbed up Rainbow mountain as she made the mountain top her home. Soon other fellow Kalons that were cast out of their packs and frowned upon joined her, the Pastel pack is now one of thee largest Kalon packs in the north.

why is one of their paws black?: It's actually very simple.
Most Kalons in her family do have one black paw also, but it goes back
farther than that of course. It started with her ancestor. He was called
Morning Feather. He had beautiful white fur. He let nothing touch
his fur, except water. One day it was very rainy and stormy. Morning
feather was walking home. The only way to get back to his home was to
cross a gross, muddy log. He closed his eyes as he couldn't bear to look
at his glorious fur. He got over the log and gasped as he noticed only one
paw got muddy-stained. He thought it would come out. But it didn't! He
tried everything. He tried to make it better by painting it black, and he
liked it better than before. When he was older he always got questions
about it. He didn't mind to answer them. He took a partner called Cactus.
Soon after he had one offspring. Surprisingly, his offspring had a black paw!
Just like him. Although, the offspring was a little different. She was more
pastel and bright. She only had some small white dots along her back. So,
when StarFlower gets asked, she's not afraid to admit it! Although, when
some other offspring were born, Kalons found out about the "Black Spots."
They called it this because most of the pastel Kalons bred with other
Kalons had offspring with black spots. The most common was around the
leg area. But Starflowers mother has her black spot on her tail!

Is it possible that you, the reader, still recall your first memory of feeling immense heat? Touching a stove, or the flame of a candle, for example. As a young child, the nerves in your hand would send a signal to your brain, instinctively making you pull your hand away due to the hot temperature. Your body knows that it’s about to get burnt, so your body reacts accordingly to avoid this pain.

Though, strangely enough, Auguste’s body doesn’t do this.

Congenital insensitivity to pain (CIP), also known as congenital analgesia, is one or more rare conditions in which an individual cannot feel -- and has never felt -- physical pain. It’s quite a rare condition and causes of CIP are still unknown to this day.
Auguste’s black paw stems from this condition. As a young kit, he would use his left paw as the ‘test paw’. He would touch burning objects alongside other dangerous goods with his left paw. To prove he couldn’t feel the pain that others felt, he would often force his paw against a hot surface such as a stove, and not react what-so-ever.

His parents, concerned for his health and wellbeing, took him to a doctor to be examined. He was diagnosed with CIP, and his paw has been completely pitch-black since. He’s often embarrassed of his blackened paw, so he often wraps his paw with bandages or covers them with gloves. If you carefully watch him, he will avoid walking on this paw, and when he does, he often limps. It doesn’t hurt him, obviously, but he knows that despite the fact he cannot feel the pain, the injury is still there. And he has to be extremely careful not to allow it to get any worse.

It was dark.
The rush of the stream carried Ceron harshly through it’s flow, bringing him crashing into a cavern east of the rapids. He’d thought to himself; maybe he was dreaming. There was no way that a straight flowing stream could’ve carried him away from the edge of the fall. No- this was fate.
As he was thrown upon the dry ground, his eyes adjusted to what was around him. Nothing but an empty space.
However, as his eyes more adjusted to the quality of the light, he noticed a strange imprint on the cavern wall.
A single, black paw print- no bigger than his own.

He approached with caution. His curiousity led him to investigate this strange mark; hesitantly lifting a paw to place it over the paw print on the wall.
And then, the cave had lit up.

Ceron’s eyes darted from wall to wall, as engravings and inscriptions formed; glowing an array of colours.
Though these were in a different language, there was a voice in his head that seemed to speak it to him; and he could understand it.

Everything fell quiet again. The quality of the light returned to a dim, foggy grey.

Though even through this darkness, Ceron could now see his paw, black, just like the engraving.

With the voice still in his head, he sat. Alone. Staring at his paws.

why is one of their paws black?: Ever since Chrom was a pup, she's been bright and bubbly, her personality practically reflecting her coat. However, one day, she just... started to change. Physically and mentally.
The "Girl of Light" started to fall into darkness. Anxieties, fears, and hatred started to plague her mind... As her views changed, her light started to seep away, starting at her paw. Pitch black tendrils started to swirl around her fur, starting as a small pinpoint, only visible to those who knew what to look for.
Her friends and family didn't notice it at first, or just brushed it off, thinking it was normal. Until it wasn't. The black started creeping up, up, up, as her personality kept changing for the worse. They started trying to help, hiring therapists and trying to figure out what was wrong. Screen after screen, diagnosis after diagnosis, the demons that Chrom faced came to light.
Now, Chrom is taking medicine, keeping her demons at bay. However, along with the black mark on her paw, they will always be there. Every once in a while, they take over, and the black starts to creep further, but with her therapists, medicine, and support, she feels that she can get through it, and is working to defeat her demons the best she can.

why is one of their paws black?: Maybelle was always a creative kalon. They've always charmed others with their creations made from beetle wings, shells, feathers, and natural crystals. They're almost never seen without some type of creation or collected treasure on their body or with them. Maybelle doesn't much care to talk about where they come from, and no one bothers to ask, simply reveling in their joyous upbeat nature whenever they run across them. They tend to be quiet, but will speak when spoken to, and loves nearly everyone that has stopped to talk to them or admired their works. They let their intuition guide them in the direction they travel to next. Along with their creations they paints as well. Paw-painting if you will. Long ago They learned that if they mixed certain berries together they would get vibrant, beautiful colors to spread their art and visions on tree trunks and rock faces as they go on her way. One day, hearing of a very rare deep indigo berry, Maybelle set off with the hopes to make the darkest color they'd ever made. After travelling many miles and meeting many new folk along the way they found one berry bush with the dark colored berries. After plucking a few off the branches they used their left paw to mash them up and began spreading the pigment across a cliff face, painting their heart away. Once finished, the ink they created dried to such a deep indigo it was almost black, the painting showing like a night sky in it's surroundings. Satisfied with their work, Maybelle found a close stream and stepped in to wash her paws. But the paint they had made had dried onto the paw they used to paint! They scrubbed and pawed at their one black paw to come clean, but the color just would not budge. After a while they gave up, tired. They laid by the river gazing at their one now indigo-black paw. They went to sleep a bit regretful that night. In the morning though, upon waking up they saw a gathering of animals, kalon and others alike, admiring their art on the cliff face. Excited, they went over and introduced themselves. After a while they realized that maybe its not so much of a bad thing for their paw to be stained by this rare, special berry dye, as it will always be a reminder of their creativity and the happiness they leave in the world wherever they go!

Raven's paw was always black. In fact, all four of them used to be. It was what she was named after-- not her exotic rainbow hair or the star pattern on her fur, but her midnight paws. "As beautiful as a raven's feathers," her mother would say.

But Raven could not see what she was talking about. Looking in the mirror, she would smile at her coat, the unique galaxy painted on it. Then she would look down at her paws and all confidence would leave her. Why was she born with these black paws? They were dull, normal-- she was anything but that.

She couldn't even look at her own paws anymore. Seeing the dark color-- how it intruded on her light fur-- made her feel terrible. She started wearing gloves to not see the mistake she was born with. Everyone was a bit confused as to why she wore them year-round, and she responded, "It matches better, don't you think?" The answer was always a hesitant "yes."

Finally, she decided, she would fix them permanently. She coated the back right one with a pastel orange that looked incredibly better than the black before it. As she was about to start the last one, she felt... emptiness?

Why was she pained? She was getting rid of the paws that made her feel terrible. She stared at the last black paw, incredibly confused. These paws... were her name. Taking them away... was like taking away her past. Even though they weren't the prettiest, they were hers.

She would keep that last black paw. It was a reminder of her past. Over time, she warmed up to it. Now, she would find herself smiling at her black paw. She realized it wasn't bad...

...it was beautiful. Just like a raven's feathers.

This is my first time trying to adopt any adoptable ever, I guess. I'm sorry if I did anything wrong. This design just looks so pretty that I had to try! I've done some research on the whole adoptables thing, but if anyone would like to provide some guidance or tips, in general or specifically related to kalons, please pm me. Thank you! ♡

Also, I think the hardest part about that writing was cutting it down to 300 words. My original was around 400. Oh well-- it was super fun to write!

Originally, Iris' dream was to become a world-renowned scientist and engineer, one who would discover how to travel through time and space. She wanted nothing more than to figure out the secrets to teleportation, but she never realized just how much potential she had. With the help of a wonderful team, they were able to get closer than any Kalon had ever been. However, after a series of tests that brought them closer and closer to their goal, the team realized quickly that their dream was just a bit too far out of reach. The amount of power required to fuel their machine was getting to be too much, almost to the point of destroying everything around them if it had gotten out of hand-- and unfortunately, it almost had.

During their soon-to-be last trial run, the team pushed their machine creation to the absolute limits, using the maximum amount of energy possible, except it was just a bit too much. The machine exploded, unable to contain the sheer amount of power it withheld, leaving the team to scatter. Iris nearly made it without a scratch, except as it burst, she fell, holding up one paw to shield her face.

Months later, her paw had fully recovered, leaving the pawpad to be a stark black in colour. To this day, she's not entirely sure what happened to leave it that way, except she's occasionally noticed a different feeling in that paw. While she can still feel with it perfectly, she's noticed a few odd things: whenever she's walking, she'll occasionally feel a different texture or object, something that she can't see, something that isn't there. Sometimes she wonders, what if the machine did work? What if she's feeling something that is there, just somewhere far far away?
