why is one of their paws black?: Bo’s paws were always very colorful, just like the rest of him. His hair, his fur, his eyes, even his personality was always very colorful. He viewed the world as a bright and beautiful place and devoted himself to always making sure everyone around him was happy. It seemed like nothing could bring him down, no matter how hard the cruel thoughts tried to plague his mind. But, despite what people see on the outside, there’s always a twist that stays out of sight.
When Bo lays alone in bed, nothing is there to distract him from the evil thoughts and voices that hurt him. He finds himself lost inside his out conscious, tears burning down his face like acid as screams that are silenced by his pillows barely make themselves to his ears. His left paw gripped his chest, yanking on the fur as if he was trying to distract himself from the mental torture that haunted him. The colors began to fade from said paw, fading from its once colorful gradient to a pitch black that reflects just how dark his mind is.
Now Bo is stuck with a singular black paw, the rest of him is colorful just as it always was. The only thing that signals that something is wrong is the horrid noises that midnight walkers hear from outside their cheerful kalons home, and the fading of the pure light that once shone brightly in his eyes. He continues the jump around and cheer others up, ignoring the fact that no one noticed the changes that happened to him after that night.

One night, Astro was lying under the shade of their favorite tree. He was watching the sun go down and was looking at the beautiful ways it seemingly painted the sky with color. He lost track of time and next thing he knew it was pitch black. He was fascinated as he saw a meteor fall. He ran to see where it went, it sounded like it was close and he could feel the ground beneath him partially shake. He saw the meteor and realized it was a ship. He ran to see if there was anyone inside. There wasn’t anyone but there was a mysterious box. He took the box and ran off to the security of his tree. He was tempted to open it but didn’t know if he should. “What could be in it?” He wondered. He picked up his right front paw and began to open the box. He saw something like a pearl inside, but it looked like a galaxy. He was interested in what it might be and was amazed by it. He used his remaining front paw to get the “pearl” out. The moment he touched it he felt an odd magnetized feeling and colors burst before him. Fireflies flew up in all directions in the tall grass. The stars seemed to get brighter and seemed to dance around him. He was excited and scared but couldn’t let go of the pearl. Next thing he knew, it was over and he looked down to the pearl. But there wasn’t a pearl, instead in it’s place was his paw. Now a black paw. Astro was astonished. It took some time to get used to, but now Astro remembers the beautiful sight every time he looks at his paw and has learned to appreciate it.

why is one of their paws black?: Riley had a rough childhood. He grew up in a divorced family with no friends, watching his mom lose herself in her depression and his dad remarry and divorce more times than he could count. He dragged his feet through school and he longed for the day he’d graduate and move on to start his own life. Through all of this, he had always been... dull. His paws were black, his colors dark and faded. He was visibly depressed, his friends would joke. To Riley, life would never get better.

He barely graduated high school, and the first ting he did was ship himself across the country to college. He began his studies to become a biologist, and slowly he began to find himself. He made friends and went to parties, he played dumb games with his roommates at 2am. He studied harder and worked toward his goals. The one thing that stuck with him was something his principal had said at his graduation: “Failure is not yet another reason to give up. Failure is a sign that you’re getting somewhere.” He lived by that, it became his motto. As life improved, so did his colors. By the time he got his degree, he’d turned bright and colorful, the Riley everyone knew he could be. However, one paw remained black. A reminder of where he came from and of how far he’s come.

He doesn't like to talk about it. The memories associated with it. The pain of that night. They'd been so prepared!! Or, rather, he'd thought so.

He can still hear Fynix crying at the cold harsh winds of the ice planet. They'd made a mistake, their vectors were off and they'd portaled to the wrong planet. They'd prepared for rains and chills, but not this. Not frozen tundra and blizzards. Blankets and jackets, thin gloves. That's all they were supposed to need.

It was supposed to be another exploration mission to collect foreign plants and fauna for examination. To study the biomes and how they ran. Just two biologists out doing their jobs. Their hobbies. It had never been dangerous like this before. It wasn't supposed to be dangerous.

Avallach stared down at his blackened paw, remembering how he'd almost lost it completely that night. The snow storm hadnt let up, and their ship was out of commission, given that they'd wrecked it when portaling in at the wrong angle. The wrong altitude. 20 feet above the ground, left to just drop.

The fall broke the windows of the small craft and knocked out the generators. Leaving Fynix and Avallach to huddle close together and await rescue once their coordinates were recovered. They had compiled what clothing they had, and Avallach handed over his gloves to the other for added warmth. He'd hoped it had been enough to keep them warm that night but the black fangs of frost bite stung on his hand.

A reminder of the adventures. Of the friendship. Of the dangers.
