“Today dawns a new era.”
Sinn’s heart beat slammed in
his ears, echoing
through his skull like a hollow cave.
The rest of the crewmen chatted
restlessly, paw pads gripping
nervously at the controls. Sinn
swallowed deeply, thick honey anxiousness
stuck there.
“These citizens have made the ultimate
sacrifice for the rest of society. We
applaud their.. bravery.”
There was no applause in the field as the
engines started. Sinn closes his eyes as
the rocket shakes, the man coming back
through the microphone.
“We wish you luck.”
The world outside blurred as the rocket lifted
from the earth, the bright purple light shining down
on the ship. Sinn lost his scream as they were sucked
through the particle portal, his vision erupting
in white.
-
Sinn awoke from his shocked state with a
panicked start, whipping his head to the left to see
his crew mates. He was met with empty seats.
Sinn leapt from his chair, ripping a hole in his suit.
Sinn fell to the floor as air ripped at his suit,
slowly turning his head to see the hatch opened wide.
Deep blackness showed from outside, a burrowed
panic slowly surfacing. He struggled to stand, finally
fighting up to his paws— only for the ship to bash
into a small asteroid drifting past. Sinn was flung from
the floor, hurdling out of the hatch. A stabbing feeling
went through his entire body as he floated through the
complete darkness. The entirety of the blank universe
stared back into his eyes, silence enveloping his being.
A scream tore through his throat, nothing but silence
to be heard.
-
Sinn woke in a sweat, breathing heavily. He was back in
his bed at the base, sunlight trickling through onto his
sheets. A smile spread across his maw as he looked at
the bright planet around him. There was sudden movement
across the room, and he shot to his feet and solutes
as the Lieutenant stepped sternly through the door.
“Hello private. Get dressed, you have a meeting to be at.”
Lieutenant turned away, twisting his gaze back to Sinn
for a moment.
“You’ve been chosen for the mission. You’ll be on the front
lines of the war.”
Sinn nodded in thanks, his solute dropping loosely to his side
as the Lieutenant left. He melted into the floor, arms
wrapping tightly around his knees. The dark abyss of
nothingness flashed behind his eyelids, the deep fear
grasping him in a cold embrace. Sinn couldn’t bring
himself to blink much, that day.
